Well, with the 5 different landscapes, it's pretty. And then there's the plot- you may as well take the "illegal shaping" that made GF2 so unique and insert a mad member of PETA into it to simulate how "effective" Litalia is to the overall atmosphere. Combat- after TWO WHOLE GAMES- goes from "acceptable" to "intolerable" at record-breaking speeds. By the end of the second island, I was totally fed up with combat, and I was painfully stymied later on when my "rush-past-the-BS" strategy forced me to take a steel-toed boot to the groin. Characters outside of Litalia are also fairly mediocre. And given that there's only two paths and neither of those paths really deviate until the endgame, the "choices" in gameplay become vaccuous. On the other hand, this is a good thing since it discourages replays. And another thing. There SERIOUSLY needs to be some fixes made to the way Mechanics and Leadership work. Mines? Dialog box checks? This crap got a bit old mid-way through the first game, it was old in the second game, and it is still old now. It's a piece of crap, but it sure is a long one, so if you enjoy the intestinal boquet of processed foods and Ecoli, you've found yourself a winner in GF3. 2.0 [ Sunday, March 05, 2006 19:45: Message edited by: Get Nathan Ashby's Groove On ] -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Fun, equally challenging as it progresses, and a unique plot. 8.5 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Combat is simplistic, but I never really minded it much. (Plus, it was undeniably fun to hoard up gold early in the game to buy the Kill spell.) The setting was unique and made up for the cliché plot (ie, "demons and an evil empire, oh my!"). 7.5 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Three new creations is not enough inventiveness to entice me as a player. The plot was, let's be blunt, absolutely horrible. "Investigate a valley and... Oh no! Illegal shaping!" And the worst part was, the "gain x reputation to join y path" formula was highly meaningless. In GF1, you at least got different sides of a story when you joined different paths. In GF2, you get the same story and (virtually) the same gameplay, making the choices entirely vaccuous. Until GF3 (and subsequently A4), it was the worst product SW had to sell. 4.0 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It introduced a totally new system that I loved at first and got bored of towards the end. (On the other hand, it was at LEAST as good as a FF-game in this respect.) The plot wasn't half-shabby at that point since we had only seen it once. I'm tempted to knock it down a bit because of how unbearably crappy its sequels would become, but I won't. 8.0 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

The gameplay started lagging after Anwnn, but compared to all other SW games that lag immediately after the registration barrier, this one is a massive improvement. Decent graphics, new engine, awesome spell circle system, etc... Oh, and but the replayability! An absolute favorite. Worth every penny. 9.0 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It's the first (well, more like fourth) venture into the caves. It introduces the new graphics, and I (for one) treat both the E and A engines basically the same (although I do still miss AoE spells, and A4's are no substitute). The plot wasn't as good as A2's, but it beats A3+4 out of the water. Combat was fairly mediocre throughout, but then again, when is it not? This is the definition of "standard avernum fare" that JV has (for better or worse) spent his time moving away from quite steadily. 7.5 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

It has a good beginning, a great "mid-beginning," and then slowly devolves... But it's still never as bad as, say, A3. 8.5 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I have been actively discouraged from Spiderweb Software's programs due to the intense hostility of the more infantile members who have a tendency to post nothing but vitriol and actively harm other members. Such children are demons to these forums and should be removed instantly by a more responsible administration. -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |
