A curious thing about Mussolini: he didn't actually make the trains run on time. He just ruled in a way that appealed to people who liked to be able to say that at least the trains were running on time. These people, apparently, are still with us now. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. Posts: 265 | Registered: Saturday, December 29 2001 08:00 |

Well, if we're gonna reason in circles, we could just as easily conclude that because the imperial regime depends for its survival on conditions that cannot but provoke social instability, it, and not the rebels, is the force of disorder. And, anyway, doesn't Vogel's tatty old lesson in ambiguity require that the two sides mirror each other? I don't remember a heck of a lot of anarchy within the ranks of the rebellion or the territory it held. But there you go: anything that claims the name of government must be on the side of order, and whatever is, is right. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. Reuters is a public company, based in London and traded there and on the NASDAQ (and maybe elsewhere by now). Its corporate structure places severe restrictions on the amount of stock any individual can hold. There was formerly a trust which, beginning in WWII and ending sometime in the 1980s (I think), privately owned the corporation. My sense is that some version or descendent of that trust still exists and exercises a controlling interest in the company. The AP is a not-for-profit cooperative owned by its member newspapers (all in the U.S., I believe). Oh yeah, and Reuters' Oddly Enough page should be your first stop for news of naked Germans, Russian vodka-rescue-and-recovery operations and eunuch pride events. The key word there is "average": the SW scenarios are committed to raising all spells to level 3, but after that, there's a good deal of variance between one spell and the next, depending on scenario design and player preference. My DwtD priest (level 34) has War Blessing and Repel Spirit at level 5 (and could have gotten the latter higher, if I'm remembering right), which is obviously a great advantage in Bahssikava, but perhaps not elsewhere; and, meanwhile, several of the party's other priest spells are at much lower levels. I don't know how you'd reproduce that in the HLPM without scripting some way of giving a player a lump sum of spell levels to apportion as he or she pleased. Perhaps a rough approximation is to make a new level of spells above 3 available every 10 levels after level 30? (So level 4 at 40, 5 at 50, etc.) Needless to say, my level 40 PCs that have gone through A Perfect Forest and Canopy have even higher average spell levels, but Canopy is hardly where you'd go to benchmark sane game balance. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. Increase the spell levels for sale in the shops. The HLPM party I created for Bahssikava had to start with spells that were, on average, less powerful than those thrown around by a party that goes through the Spidweb scenarios. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. Either I misunderstand the hints file (good chance), or one of its solutions is more complicated than it needs to be. To charge the beam emitter in the far NE (power source at 30,8), I didn't have to mess around freeing the mirrors that are trapped behind the beam that bisects that room. Using the lever at 46,44, I fired up the emitter in the "library" in the SE corner of the level and directed its beam to power the emitter in the NE room. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. What do you think of this? A heavily indebted subsidiary of a company formerly run by the Vice President of a certain nation received a no-bid contract worth hundreds of billions of public dollars to clean up after a war started at that Vice President's urging, thus returning the subsidiary to solvency and permitting its parent company to initiate proceedings to sell it, successfully boosting the price of that parent company's stock, in which the Vice President at the time owned 433,000 options. Damn corrupt Third World countries. The lesson is, never waste our virtuous white dollars on them. I'm presuming TM counts cursed items as a "workaround," since he and I discussed the idea awhile back. What effect are you trying to reproduce, TM? The absolute inability to wield a weapon -- as in my attempt to reproduce the effects of amputation -- or simply the illegality of walking around with openly brandished choppers? -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white. quote:. . . . provided, of course, that they don't "yell" at or "insult" the company in question. That wouldn't be good manners -- and business, while it may not be about ethics, it sure is about good manners . . . Let's be clear: nobody had been up to much "yelling" at JV on these boards recently until a remarkable number of new visitors took an interest in trolling through the back issues. And if you don't think there's a point to complaining about a product you've purchased, take a look at how much better JV's support for BoA already is than his support for BoE was. If you're telling me he did that out of the goodness of his heart, I refer you to your earlier remarks about business and ethics. -------------------- Forgive them, for they are young and rich and white.
