Already have, doesn't do much. The problem seems pretty clearly the result of operator negligence.

. . . . and a good place to find custom item scripts: look at the scenario data scripts for the prepackaged scenarios (i.e. valleydydata.txt).

EDIT: By the way, spyderbytes, since you use the editor far more than I do: I've been assuming that I get the "out of memory" error because I'm doing sloppy and stupid swapping back and forth between BoA and the Editor (since quitting either usually eliminates the error), and not because there's an actual bug in the Editor. Have you run into the error? (If it happens, it does so the first time the Editor tries to load a new graphic.)

To begin with, you probably need some quotation marks around the item's names. Beyond that, what exact error message do you mean by "won't recognize"? Some, such as that odd "out of memory" message, are easily fixed by quitting and restarting the Editor.

Question: WTF is Icon Adjustment? in Blades of Avernum Editor

x_icon_adjust = color shift (with the prefix x = "fl," "cr," "it," etc.). See pp. 48-49 of the Editor Manual for the available color shift options you can employ.

x_which_icon and x_ed_which_icon define an icon's location on the sheet defined by which_sheet or ed_which_sheet. See p. 48 for this as well.

Qu'on l'avait entendu faire,
Et que nous sommes perdus
Ici dans les étoiles.
Petites étoiles, grandes étoiles,
Emportées dans la nuit,
Et que nous sommes perdus
Ici dans les étoiles,
Petites étoiles, grandes étoiles
Emportées dans la nuit.
Et que nous sommes perdus
Ici dans les étoiles.

John Milton was a derivative bureaucrat paid to gloss political killings in decorous Latin, a job for which his sole previous experience was turning the proceeds of his father's usury towards perfecting himself in the many languages of sophistry. He never wrote a decent line that wasn't lifted from Spenser, Shakespeare, Virgil or Lucan; at Cambridge, his nickname was "The Lady," and his first wife fled to her parents' home within two months of their wedding. His contemporaries denounced him for a pervert and a libertine, and he had the presumption to return the compliment by delivering them with puritanical lessons in morality justifying divorce. When more courageous partisans of the revolutionary cause he claimed to support went to jail or death rather than renounce it, he skulked into "artistic" retirement and mealy-mouthed out a poem which lacks the conviction even to admit it has abandoned revolution. That twaddling Romantics could not think their way beyond his example is all one needs to know about Romanticism, as well as about the British need to innoculate future Indian colonial functionaries with an author arbitrarily chosen to be the civilizing well of English undefiled. Furthermore, he made F.R. Leavis very sad.

And above all, he'd be more likely to accept that description than he would a Telegraph reader patting him on the head for showing himself an "extremely good wordsmith."

I might be able to defeat a wet paper bag. On points. If you gave me twelve rounds. And, in the interests of testing RoR for "balance," I took those combat stupids and applied them to the weakest party of four that I -- or rather, the pre-packaged character types -- could design (didn't have Enduring Barrier, among other things). Even with all that against me, I only had trouble in one fight, and that trouble arose because outdoor fights in Blades are badly conceived in a number of ways, so the fault, if it is one, is not entirely TM's.

And I'm not sure TM plays singletons to test for balance. I believe he plays them to confirm Alcritas' suggestions about his parentage.

The point is that an item given it_variety = 9 should NEVER combine with anything of the same type, at least according to the Editor docs, p. 61, so it_variety = 9 does not seem to work as advertised.

Sorry -- we're talking at cross purposes -- I meant only the flaming sword, which Alorael was discussing in the post before my first. Fine waveblade is a fine thing. I've found it about equal to the dagger (provided I'm not playing with the fighter who dumped everything that should've gone into assassination into strength and other bonus-producing skills), but I feel much cleaner using the waveblade or the blessed longsword.

EDIT: I'm fairly sure the assassin's dagger doesn't increase your chances of assassinating at all. But in a high level Vogel scenario, where battles are typically by volume or attrition, you're likely to assassinate everything -- sometimes including major NPCs -- so the damage bonus proves almost automatic.

Thruyl: That was one of them. What are you counting as base damage? The raw base of the assassin's dagger is higher, isn't it?. I found the difference in "base" bonuses consistently significant only at higher levels. But since JV tends to juice up combat difficulty with quantity rather than quality, the dagger's skill bonuses were ultimately of even greater significance in actual play at those levels, resulting in 40-70 more damage from the dagger, depending on the opponent. (So obviously, scenario design skews the comparison: that figure is from Z-K Run; I sold the flaming sword, so I can't quickly test, say, DwD.) The sword's flame bonus is meaningless.

Not that I think that dagger is a good idea -- handing a growing party that many free skill points is a disaster for balance.

They do keep coming as long as you're near one of the spawn points. Just continue to move. Once you find the big V, who hangs out along the west-south-western wall, your spawning problems will be at an end (there may another way of accomplishing this, too: I was too impatient by this point in the scen. to deal with everything in the SE corner of the map).

Again, my memory is hazy, but I believe you need only make it to the Hall of Judgment and stand at the dock. So don't try to kill off the hordes, just keep moving forward in each combat round and hack a way through them.

This is happening on the battlefield itself? If so, stick to the north or south wall, particularly as you approach the middle (there are little bypasses there). If it's not happening there, you'll have to wait for somebody with a better memory to post.

I wouldn't oppose fixing a corollary of this "feature": fields left over after their generating monsters are dead (say the ice walls left by ice puddings in ASR's drake lair) are not blocked for the purposes of determining a party's placement upon leaving combat. So in cramped layouts, long retreats are often required to prevent your PCs taking more damage exiting a fight than fighting it. I suppose a DEAD_STATE could be used to pull of an ugly solution.

Alec, do you ever listen to the baroque violinist Rachel Podger? Her performances -- esp. unaccompanied Bach and Telemann -- got me liking what never did much for me before, but I'm a strategically-shaved chimp on these subjects.

Speaking of which, TM, though your virtues are many and estimable, you have the musical sense of a divorced 55-year-old school psychologist whom no amount of baldness will make abandon his pony tail. Why not dabble in the early works of Genesis while you're at it? Or Magma?
