I found this while looking for stuff for the X-Com Series, I think you'll all appreciate it.

http://www.geocities.jp/menopem/

its a little program made by some japanese gamers, it allows you to run fullscreen Direct 3D programs in a window, It seems to work on most things that are Direct 3d. I've tried it on The entire Geneforge series, along with Avernum 4, i've also tried it on Master of Orion 2 :D its SUPER Handy

Life does indeed take the "easiest route", the shift from prey to predator is a hard one, omnivorism is also a survival mechanism [anything is better than nothing in most cases.] omnivorism also supplies you with building blocks, while theoretically enough of everything can be obtain in any diet that excludes some substance [meat, vegetable matter, liquor :P ] its markedly more difficult. The reason that nature, and then sentience take the "Easy route" is because of energy expenditure. The less energy it takes to do something [staying alive, defending oneself *the prevalence of scare tactics to actual physical confrontations*, etcetera] the less of a threat its failure poses to you, seeing as you can retry, [a cheetah, a very high energy expenditure predator, when chronically unsuccessful is consequently dead] and in the case of critters that are predated, it leaves you with more energy to run and hide. Sentience follows right along because less time and energy spent taking care of your basic needs means more time and energy spent playing, socializing, mating, or building one's own status. While its possible that a completely herbivorous, or completely carnivorous [and I mean truly so, not a subset of an already developed species that adapted their behavior to deal with food shortages] sentient being could evolve, its much less likely, due to the complexity or bulk of a diet needed to obtain all their nutritional requirements, along with the inherent requirement for adaptations, small and large scale, physiological and behavioral to sustain that new diet, or adapt one's self around an old, formerly insufficient one.

I made that comment because the "easiest path" for the proper nutrient balance required for brain development is relatively balanced in meats and plants. Although its possible to go completely carniverous or completely herbivorous, its definitely more difficult and it requires additional adaptation.

Um… similar topics, different projects; and I use furnation, because I'm a furry. Hey, its free web space, unlimited traffic, and relatively reliable regardless of the rumors I've heard about the Webmaster being a flake. Have a problem with that; not my concern, as its your problem. Some of my stuff can be downbeat, or sappy, but its just the way I do things. As for the word thing, I use it for formatting though I can see the problems it could cause, and apologize for them, I'll remedy it immediately; expect .txt versions of all of the stories in there shortly.

I sometimes write, just as a hobby mainly; mostly because I can't ever seem to finish something.

I've decided to work on a new peices, partially to vent, partially to practice, and partially to develop characters I want to use in a comic I might post online [again, tendancy not to finish things, I want that to change though.]

my works are stored, partial at
http://www.furnation.com/littleheaven/docs/

and my newest one is
http://www.furnation.com/littleheaven/docs/NewInTown.txt

This new one is probably going to be a bit sad, I'd like critique, on the old or new, I don't really mind which, though the new would be a bit more helpful. *chuckles*

You can probably see how I and my writing style have changed as well from that, since that stuff spans a period back to 1999.

Also feel free to post your own stuff, ideas, and whatnot, Its fun to read other people's prespectives.

Has a song ever hit you squarely in the side of the head like a sack of industrial bricks?

some of the ones that have smacked me silly are...
"Only One" - Yellowcard
"I Want My Life" - Smile Empty Soul
"Digital Love" - Daft Punk
"Minerva" - Deftones
"Boyd's Journey" - Damon Albarn & Michael Nyman ["Ravenous" Soundtrack]
"Trailer Trash" - Modest Mouse

The first one is the most recent, and man did it hit me hard, the only thing thats hit me near as hard was "Butterfly Effect" and that hit me harder, brought me to tears. [I'm a sappy dope.]

just so ya know, chances are the head of a cat morph would be far removed from an actual feral cat head, same with the head of a lizard morph. This is due to a few factors, primarily the fact that the change in stance, from quadrupedal to bipedal will cause a change in the shape of the head and placement of the face/muzzle; and that sentience indicates that a species need be at least weakly omniverous, dictating in a change of the jaw and tooth structure. [the addition of molars and premolars, along with more, well developed incisors. The posture change mainly changes the configuration of the eye sockets and entry hole for the spinal cord at the base od the skull.]

Just beat it... rather short.. I don't see what the fuss is about, aside from the overpowered weapons and monsters.. the plot was a little thin... its like he intentionally kept the player out of the loop.

when writing something to toy with minds, your better off overinforming the audience with facts, philosophy, and esoteria; making sure that they still don't get it of coarse. The feeling of "Strangety" that comes from logical contradictions has a fuller effect when the entire logical statement is present, and concreet. [its easier to confuse someone with a "blatantly contradictory truth", than a thinly veiled lie, or sparsely described truth.] also.. the fight with shroud was sorta laughably easy... I just pumped him full of missiles.. didn't have to melee, heal, or bless the whole fight...

1st slot char, nephilim, using the magical bow of hurt that you got from the sniper-general.
22 dex
4 bow
2 sharpshooter

2nd slot, slith, blessed bow, steel arrows
20 dex
4 bow
2 sharpshooter

3rd slot, nephilim, blessed sling
10 dex
5 thrown
2 sharpshooter

4th slot, human, morag's scepter
10 int
10 dex
20 mage

I go with 20 dex, and 10 str for fighters in BoA

20 dex maxs both your to-hit and your opposed bonus, as well as gives you 28% parry, the 10 strength maxes out your carry limit [600 stones with strong back], after that the price does get a little too much for the additional benifits that dexerity brings, and you'll be hitting most stuff anyway.

Actually, it's only 5-25 extra damage. Remember, the damage of missile attacks only increases once for every two levels of dexterity you get.

Its 10-50, the dex bonus on a crude crossbow is 1-5 points per two levels of dex, 20/2 = 10, 10*1= 10, 10*5=50, 10-50, I just got a char up to 20 dex, regularly does +70 damage, you also get a bonus to parry, and a bonus to your dodge skill, basically, it raises your to-hit, your opposed roll [this making you very hard to hit], your parry, and to your ranged damage, this is only a minor bonus, but it also raises your tool use [one for every two points in dex], and I also beleive it gives you a chance to assassinate [I assassinate fairly regularly with 20 dex, though I've not tried to work out a formula for assassination rate based on dex.]

heheh, it applies to all weapons,
about 20 dex is what you need to hit any monster that doesn't have an opposed bonus while wearing platemail, a large shield, boots, gauntlets, an iron/steel helm, and various other goodies :P

[with that stuff equiped and using an iron weapon, that puts you right at 95%, steel and blessed would put you at 100% and 105% respectively, but it just gets cut down to 95% anyway.]

as for weapon damage, weapon skill is the way to go with melee weapons [you'll do insane damage with 20 dex, thats 10-50 extra damage with a crude crossbow] but melee damage is based on str and weapon skill, and while strength give the same bonus as weapon skill, plus the bonus to carry, and to door-bashing; I don't really see the point in bashing doors, and after you max out your carry the extra cost with str isn't worth it anymore [since you don't get the carry bonus along with the damage bonus.]

If BoA uses a system anything like Avernum 3 [I'm willing to bet that its very similiar] I'll go with neither.

I did a little trial a while ago... here is what I came up with.

Parry = ((dex+1)/3)*4
*Base To-Hit = 45+(dex*5)
+Opposed To-Hit Penalty = 40+(dex*5)
$carry = 50+(str*30)
Int Spell Multiplie = .4+(.4*Int)
Class Spell Multiplier = 1+(cla*.12)

* To figure true to-hit find your
base, factor in equipment penalties,
and opponent oppossed penalties,
then cap it if it passes 95%

+ The oppossed penalty caps when
their to-hit is reduced to 5%.

$ Carry caps at 350.

weapons
blessed -5
steel -10
iron -15
bronze -20
stone -20

armor

helms
iron -5
armor
leather -10
studded -15
chain -20
plate -25
shields
small shield -5
large shield -10

Clearly dexterity is the best weapon :D put someone's dex up high enough, and put a stick in their hand and they never miss :P [I ignored the damage bonus because its included in the description of the weapon] it may be a bit more expensive, but dexterity also grants you a bonus to your parry and opposed to-hit rolls [lowers your opponents chance of hitting you in combat]

PS. There are some descrepencies between the int based spell bonus and the class skill based spell bonus because I used two different methods of derivation... I'll have to go back through and re-crunch the numbers... make them both percentages. [for those who don't know 1.00 = 100%]

I play pen and paper games, mainly AD&D, Jadeclaw/Ironclaw, and Albedo, though on occassion I have played RIFTS, Whitewolf, and GURPS. I'm currently a computer science student, ravenous job seeker, artist, and weirdo. And I'm writing up my own pen and paper rules set.

Its called "Memories of Aura", and it centers around a specific medium sized greenish-blue planet named Aura by its various denizens.

The denizens of aura are all within the time period between the late bronze age, and the early iron age, and worship beings called "Celestial Navigators", "Ferrymen of The Night Sky", and similiar things.

Its very incomplete, though I have rudimentary roll rules set up, as well as a partially complete race index [Detailed information on all of the races is present, but it needs three more racial images, "settlement" pictures, flavor text, and other such minor details], I'm also nearly through writing up the equipment guide, save a few professional tools, miscelaneous things, and statistical data on the tools.

If you care too, take a look, and offer up your opinions ^.^

I play AD&D, whitewolf, and the sanguine games [ironclaw, jadeclaw, and albedo] I personally prefer jadeclaw and ironclaw to albedo, albedo is a logistics NIGHTMARE. so many rolls.. *cowers in fear*

for albedo, just think of a slightly dumped down verion of iron or jadeclaw... but with more ranged combat and use of variable explosives... not that bad, I know... but then factor that plays and npcs come in 5 man blocks. [each PC or major NPC "controls" a 5 man squad, including themselves... ] running an evenly matched battle between 5 players and comparable NPCs got out of hand quick...

"Humanoid" evolution is most often used for two reason, one, the anthropomorphic principle [the robotics one, not the physics one], which states that the more human like something appears, the less negative the reaction to it will be [except when something is perfectly human, then it illicits a sharply negative reaction, because it starts to unnerve people.], and because it makes sense, bipedal evolution has many advantages over most other paths when concerning sentient life.

1. Standing upright allows for a higher vantage point, and thus a longer viewing distance. Very helpful when other things are still trying to eat you.

2. A bipedal, upright stance frees up the forlimbs, making them into "arms" which are by far the MOST helpful thing which can be evolved, hands allow tool use, writen language, mathematic [it started on the fingers people], and more importantly, weapons. Weapons increase your chance of surviving immensely.

3. The upright stance also increases the range of movement, as well as the ammount of momentum one can gather with that range of movement, for the now upper extremeties, making them even more effective at tool use and weapon use.

Baring a strongly telekenetic presentient species, everything will evolve arms if possible.

And yes, I am a furry. O.o;

I vote something will kill us all off long before either of those strike, and as an interesting side note:

Nothing humanity could ever do, short of setting off all the nuclear weapons in the world at a single point to "attempt" to knock it off orbit, rip a large chunck out of it, or knock the moon into it could ever really harm the planet.

Nuclear holocaust, Global warming, biological agents, anything we're capable of doing short of physical alteration of the earth's mass or orbit itself won't do a damn thing to the planet in the long run, after we're gone, it will regenerate itself and life will start over, even if that period of regeneration is billions of years.

but hey, whats that to a planet?
