Every problem has its source. But sources can have sources. And therein lies the problem. - Teachings of the Order
--------------

Sister Quartz looked up into the night sky, and nearly fell over The Muse's starboard railing.

She bolted off to the messenger pigeon room, and scrawled a quick message, hurling the laden pigeon into the reddish night sky.

Look up. Awaiting orders. - Quartz

--------------

Brother Yewbark could see the red sky through a window in King Accis's shack of a headquarters. He thought about leaping out and running back to The Winecask, but the armed guards around him made him reconsider.

This will be interesting...

--------------

Brother Clearwater gazed out at the mainland from the upper level of the Council Hall. The rainy season was set to begin soon, and huge, billowing clouds were gathering abouve the continent. And then he noticed something strange...

The clouds were red. The first thing to enter Clearwater's mind was that a volcano had gone off somewhere deep in the mainland. The tides had been fiercer today than most days, with some unusually large waves doing mild damage to harbors. It kind of fit...

It might be a good idea to check this out... he thought, strolling down to go find Brother Redscale.

--------------

After speaking with Brother Redscale, it was decided. He would lead a group of guards and priests to go check out the area, see what the damage was. Somebody had to look out for the continent's interior.

Well.

I give up. Hedgehogging sounds good to me... hopefully an IC post soon.

I'll be trying to write an IC post... soon. That's really all I can promise. Life hates me, and I hate it back.

Um... your call, really. Sift through the criticism threads, and you can decide.

Is it expansive?
Yes. It's huge, with plenty of little side-areas to explore and kill stuff in. Loot abounds, with the return of a few much-beloved artifacts.

quote:
Is it immersive?
Kinda-sorta. The atmosphere is still there, just not as strong as A2's feel. The huge-ness and the lack of outdoors lower the immersive quality, but it's still solid.

quote:
Does the plot have a lot of depth?
Um, no. Not at all, really. Except for the shades, most of the plot is unusually simple. On the plus side, a few leftovers from A3 get settled (at long freakin' last).

quote:
Do the new skill changes and spell changes make it better or worse?
New spells are good. I miss a few that were taken away (Simulacrum, Radiant Shield, Cloud of Blades, rest in peace), but I love Daze and the improved Divine RETRIBUTION!!!

Skills are still well-done. I miss Pathfinder (nothing hazardous can be stepped on anymore, which is very not-cool) and Barter, but otherwise the skill system is intact. Pure Spirit was long overdue.

EDIT: Drat. Quote tags.

That is quite unusual... perhaps a new generation of active members has arisen. Or maybe most of the older oldbies are overworked right now.

That said, I'm proud to have a number in the 4000s. Come to think of it, I registered awfully close to Kelandon.

Started with Avernum, never even touched Exile.

I think the question here is which Avernum bobdylanrocks1966 downloaded. If it was A4, then the unwelcome reception is understandable, since A4 looks and plays absolutely nothing like anything in Exile. But if it's A1/2/3, then I don't quite understand the complaints.

You know, I could very, very, very easily go on a rant here, but I won't.

Just kidding.

Undead Valley is painfully unbalanced from the start. Fireblast still does just as much damage to undead, and usually more once you've got a half-competent mage in your party. Besides, once you get jaded on the hordes upon hordes of undead, Fireblast is just so much more satisfying.

EDIT: Thanks for pointing that out, Dikiyoba. But anyway, the Current page is broken. And since that's where the link in Aran's sig leads, perhaps it ought to be fixed.

If I recall correctly, there are steps leading up from the ice into the center of the Archives, so you don't really need the key. Look all the way around the level.

Should that fail, the Ivory Key can be found in the Tower of Elderan. (Source: Shrodinger's FAQ)

I'm torn. I want to beta-test, but I'm not sure I'll have a stable place to play BoA for a while... and I'm not sure I'll be able to run it off my iPod.

If my laptop gets back soon, I'll be willing to test.

When I first read this topic, I thought you'd be trying to kill every single merchant in every BoA scenario. Possibly every friendly townsperson.

(Particularly after Toenail's topic about killing the Portal Mage in A4)

No good. He's still set to be "unkillable".

I've tried blocking it every way possible, to no avail. He just group-terrifies, then kills everything and runs off (with .000001 HP or so).

This is a bit of a disappointment, I will admit. Merchant?!

Technically, "Adventurer" or some equivalent is only on there in two forms: the lowest of the low (Mercenary), and the "I've beaten the game" level of adventurer (Defender of Exile).

EDIT: Wait... it changed. Huh? I'll take Innkeeper.

EDIT 2: Yay!

I miss the Exile spells... and I've never even played the game. Acid Spray seems to be a holdover from a period when SW games had that wider array of spells, which could do more interesting things. If I understand things correctly, status spells were better.

But if nothing else, they add a role-playing element to the games, which the games kind of need.

(That said, I'm pleased with how A4 dealt with status spells. You want a powerful Acid Spray? Play A4.)
