There are those who say that sex should be completely limited to reproductive purposes (and teh Bible sez so!!!1111), but I think they're crazy.

I know that friction is proportional to the normal force, so I get the analogy, but I thought that the only relationship between electric fields and magnetic fields (classically) was that a change in one creates the other, and I don't think that a bar magnet creates a changing magnetic field, so I'm a bit befuddled.

Something just occurred to me: What you're saying is limited to simple Newtonian equations, right? I mean, one of the problems with magnetism is that permanent magnets don't have simple laws underlying them, because permanent magnetism is a quantum effect.

Because, clearly, a permanent magnet sitting on a table near a small piece of metal can do some work, attracting the metal towards it.

Blades of Exile is a good purchase.

I recommend starting with the first game that used a particular engine and working forward, because it's sort of annoying to go backward. In that case, I recommend Nethergate (optionally — it's great but not part of a series), Avernum 1, Avernum 2, Avernum 3, and Blades of Avernum, in that order.

Alternatively, you could play Geneforge 1, Geneforge 2, and Geneforge 3, in that order.

Or, if you want, you can play Exile 1, Exile 2, Exile 3, and Blades of Exile, in that order.

In any case, one way to know what you want to do is to download the demos of Exile 1, Avernum 1, and Geneforge 1 (and possibly Nethergate), and play a little bit of each. That will tell you which series to start with.

You could, of course, change it to 10-coin increments or something. That way it wouldn't be too hard to make it much more flexible.

Be sure to take notes as you design, too. There's no need to plan out which SDFs you're going to use before you use them, but there is a definite need to mark down which SDFs you've used after you've used them.

I've never been one for designing on paper before I go to the editor. I like to have a general overview of the plot in my head (not on paper) before I start on a scenario (and a good idea of the major characters and how the party plays into it all, as well as some sense of what the towns and outdoors are going to be shaped like), and I like to have a general sense in my head of what a town will look like before I start work on it, but I also find it useful to let a town grow as I think.

My results with this technique have been mixed, but so have my results with anything else I've tried.

Also, do you think we're the first people to dig up dinosaur bones? When the ancients were doing serious digging for construction, or when mountainsides shifted in earthquakes or other natural events, they found enormous bones in the ground just as we do. A T-rex may not be exactly like a dragon, but I can't say that I wouldn't come up with a dragon, too, if I were looking at old dinosaur bones.

You can page through old topics a little to see what has been said quite a lot recently. Anything relating/comparing/contrasting Spiderweb's series (GF, Av, Ex) has been done to death. Online play has been talked to death.

But really, there's no shame in creating a topic that gets locked. Just try not to take offense when people say, "I'm sick of talking about this."

Apparently, the way that I got past the fight (according to HINTS.txt) is that I disarmed the fighter before the charming started, dashed past him and all drakes (lord included), sanctified the altar, and then gathered everyone together to mop up. Not very different from what Thuryl suggested.

When you do that, be sure to test your dialogues very carefully, because it's very easy to get your SDFs mixed up and have everything (or nothing) display all at once.
