In fact, it sounds a lot like the GF system. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Designer FAQ, Q3. EDIT: For the record, if it's in the Designer FAQ, that means it's been asked often enough that I got sick of retyping my answer every time someone brought up the same idea. You are not at all the first to have an idea like this, but you would be the first to finish it. Direct link to Jeff Vogel's thoughts on the matter. Um, most exciting dinosaurs were big. Rather too big to escape notice, even in "unexplored" places. It's not likely that we're ever going to find a polar-rex. We might find something small (say, on the order of a big lizard), but that's about it. However, the idea that birds are basically what's left of the dinosaurs has been circulating for some time. I don't know how that theory holds up at the moment, but I haven't heard that it's been discredited. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. It's also worth noting that no one has ever won two consecutive annual scenario design contests, not even Alcritas. EDIT: You know, if all of those unreleased scenarios actually do get released, we'd have enough scenarios to have a three categories: BoE scenario, small BoA scenario, and large BoA scenario. Then we could take the winners and judge them together. I'd much rather that than judging BoE and BoA together right away. I really can't stand having BoE and BoA judged together. I suppose it's necessary, assuming that we don't have enough scenarios to judge them independently, but I think it allows the judges' biases to take control much more than it should. And, as I keep repeating, Exodus will not be much like Bahs. I liked Bahs for what it did, but I have no desire to make another one. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. My e-mail address is too much of a giveaway for me to try to hide anything. As far as I know, I've never posted phone numbers or addresses in public Internet places, but I move so often that it hardly matters. On the whole, I'd expect my online identity not to hurt an application and maybe even to help it — moderating some boards, winning a contest, that sort of thing. And there's at least one person who I sort of know in real life who calls me "Kel." -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Update: I just got chills watching the final cutscene. The scenario is finishable! There are still a fair number of bugs, and there's a host of things that I'd like to go back and change, but basically I'm going to give it one more run-through with a regular party (fixing the bugs that I come across) and then I'll send out a beta call. Barring disaster, I'm still projecting a beta call sometime this month. Right now there's about sixty towns and about thirty outdoor sections. I'm debating whether to use the Beta Testing Center or not (so anyone with an opinion can weigh in on that). I've put up a little bit more on the slith language (particularly on Modern Slith), in case anyone wants to know how I pronounce "Bahssikava" or "Legare." :P -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. You know how you load a saved game? That's when the LOAD_SCEN_STATE is called. It can be called many times (depending on how many times during the course of a scenario you reload). The START_SCEN_STATE is called only once, when you start the scenario. Also, one does not often use print_str in either of those places, although one probably could. Other calls go there. Check released scenarios to see which ones. quote:Now that I've referred back to the docs, this makes sense to me. Apparently, what_day_of_scenario gives "how many days have passed since the current scenario began" — that is, on day 1, zero days have passed since the start of the scenario (since BoA rounds down). However, the weird behavior above seems as though it ought to be documented — it's not too hard to guess that the day of the year will be non-functional if the dates are off, but it should be stated explicitly, especially if the other call does work. I'll put this in the bugs thread at some point. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Try putting this in the scenario's START_STATE: print_num(what_day_of_year()); This should tell you what the value of the call is every turn. By the way, these are all basic debugging techniques that you'll want to keep in mind whenever anything doesn't work the way that you expect in Avernumscript: isolate the problematic call, test the call as best you can, and return it to the context that you had it in originally. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Yes, but does it work if you eliminate the force_start_day? It's possible that using force_start_day(-1) screws up the call what_day_of_year and makes it always 0 or something. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. The most obviously new aspect of the A4 engine is the seamless world: there's no outdoors or GF-style zoning. The engine otherwise looks a lot like a hybrid of GF and Avernum, with a few balance tweaks. As far as sound goes, Jeff licenses his sound from somewhere online. The sounds have changed somewhat since the early days, somewhat to the chagrin of a BoA designer who wants to use sounds that exist in GF or Exile but not in BoA, although I agree that they don't feel much different. I'm not sure that I care about music. It might be a nice touch, and I'm definitely interested in the old versions of some of the Exiles that had music. On the other hand, based on the way that the plot took a downturn in A4, I'd rather that we get back to basics first (gameplay and plot) and worry about side issues later (graphics, sound, music). Still, it would be a nice touch. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Eliminate the force_start_day and see what happens. You could be right about the first day being day 0, but that would be very odd (given what the calendar shows). quote:Uh, not quite. The scenario's START_STATE, not the scenario's START_SCEN_STATE. Two different things.
