What I'm asking is if you already did an update. If you did an update halfway through playing A3, your old saves will crash.

Glad to hear it's working well for people. I changed a small error in the description of DoK in the Library (thanks to TM for pointing this out).

But if you already have broadband for other reasons, it's much easier just to use that.

In fact, if you talk a lot internationally (more than an hour per week), broadband is cheaper.

I've updated the HLPM (available here) to v1.2.0, which is a complete re-write of the utility. "Why?" you might ask. I did it because the scenario script was getting too long with all the books in the Library and also the shop setup function — I had already split the latter into two parts, but it just wasn't enough. I was going to have to keep patching little bits over to other places, which just seemed bad. The new version cleans all of that up.

Also, it should no longer be possible to get stuck in the Level Raiser, and even if you do somehow manage to get stuck, I've inserted blue Panic Runes so that you can get out.

Much of the code has been streamlined again, and I've added more comments and simplified a few things.

Anyway, consider this version a sort of public beta, and if no one comes up with any problems, I'll send it to Spiderweb as a real release.

You didn't happen to use a save game made from a Classic version of A3 in a Carbon version of A3, did you? Most of my old saves are from A3 v1.0.0, and they crash in exactly the way you described in the current version.

Re-making dungeons that Jeff has already made sucks. I know, because I did it for three dungeons in Bahssikava, and it's really lame.

If someone could make the scenario editor capable of importing the floors and terrains directly from an Avernum game, though, it would be a lot more likely.

To the best of my knowledge, the AT only has one reference as well, and it's exactly the same thing. It's definitely Pralgad.

You can't. There's just no way. Also, A3 didn't have scripts.

EDIT: But you CAN show an image via large_draw_pic_dialog that has numbered buttons on it and then ask which button to press via numeric input.

EDIT 2: Specifically, assuming your image was numbered 520 in your custom graphics:

large_draw_pic_dialog(520,"You find a panel with five buttons that you can press!");
message_dialog("Now enter the number of the button you would like to press (or _0_ not to press a button).","");
what_num = 20;
get_text_response("Which button?");
check_text_response_match("0");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 0;
check_text_response_match("1");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 1;
check_text_response_match("2");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 2;
check_text_response_match("3");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 3;
check_text_response_match("4");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 4;
check_text_response_match("5");
if (got_text_match())
what_num = 5;
// Then, if what_num still equals 20, they've entered something wrong.
// You could start them over with a set_state_continue to the beginning
// of this state, or you could cancel the whole thing.
// If what_num equals 0, they chose to cancel it. If it equals anything
// else, they chose to press the button with that number.

Heck, I played a duo in A2 consisting of a plain fighter and a mage/priest who I eventually trained in fighting. My mage/priest was killing dervishes by the end of the game.

I like getting Gymnastics for casters because it only takes a few points (buy up to 5, train up to about 9) and it means that you can send your spellcasters into combat to clean up summons and garbage like that.

Similar to what Alorael said (but not identical): Gymnastics is worth getting up to around 9 or 10 in A1 and A2 on all your characters, especially since you can get 5 points of it without using any skill points. I'm less sure about its value in A3.

Have you defined the town script in the Town Details window? If so, what is the name defined there, what is the name of the script in the scenario folder, and do they match? And what is the name of the dialogue script?

Do the states in the town script run?

First of all, it's "dialogue."

Second, was there a script error of any kind when you entered the town? The game will print a red line that begins, "Error:" when you first enter the town.

Is the dialogue script named properly? Is the person's memory cell 3 set to the right value?

Is there any evidence either that FDR did that or that GWB did? While GWB ignored warning signs, I've never heard any legitimate argument that he intended for 9/11 to happen, and the same for FDR and Pearl Harbor.

I mean, evidence, not speculation.

Uh, English has quite a few more tenses than, say, the Slavic languages. And from what I understand, the time structure in non-Indo-European languages works entirely differently, so that the Chinese languages don't have what could really be called tense. But the auxiliary verbs make life simpler compared to, say, Ancient Greek, which had as many tenses but no auxiliary verbs and therefore was forced to conjugate based off of many different stems for the same verb.

Our use of articles is anomalous; we're not as article-happy as the Romance languages or as lacking of them as the Slavic ones (or most others, for that matter). Our alphabet is probably the most heinous on Earth, although I have to admit that pictograms are probably worse, so East Asia has us beat there. Our sounds are actually somewhat worse than most languages — the short I (as in "infantry") and the short A (as in "apple") are both fairly peculiar. However, the Khoisan click languages of sub-Saharan Africa have us beat on that score by a long shot.

But then, English isn't so much a language as it is the greatest hits of all the other languages. Virtually every language on Earth has donated some bit of vocabulary to English one way or another.

Hey, Greencat. Welcome to the boards and leave your sanity at the door and all that good stuff.

Jeff made reference to a problem like this in his answered questions page

quote:
Question: I made a set of custom graphics (black fences). When I tried them in Blades of Avernum, they looked OK except each one had a vertical black line near or on it. The custom graphics sheet is the right size. What can I do to fix this?

Answer: I think I can answer this one. Some graphics programs (AppleWorks/ClarisWorks, for example) can set the PICT's bounding rectangle in a weird way when the graphic is copied out of the application. This can cause this behavior.

To fix it, in your graphics program, shift the icon so it is at the far upper left corner before you copy-paste it into the resource file. (In other words, move it to it's as far up and elft as it can go without shifting off the edge.)
