This has bothered me to no end. I don't have access to the games right now (and can't download them either), or I'd check the spelling myself. With Google, I've found Pralgrad and Pralgad used equally often, and on these boards Pralgrad is used a bit more than Pralgad.

I'm not asking for fan-established canon - I assume Jeff Vogel must have used one of these spellings consistently in the games, and I'd like to know which.

If someone knows, I'd also be interested what gave rise to the other spelling...

Edit: Likewise, Aixo or Aizo? I am reasonably sure it is Aizo in the games, but not entirely.

It's definitely Aizo in the games; Aixo is one of Alec's inventions.

Nobody's actually sure about Pralg(r)ad; we'd have to check.

Well, according to the sources in Kelandon's Pink and Pretty Page it's Pralgad.

After loading Avernum 3, and clicking the Xian Tome a few dozen times... I have this:

Aizo, PRALGAD, Vantanas and Valorim.

If you want to check, the book is called "Lands of the Empire".

Thought so. I just wonder why everybody keeps calling it Pralgrad.

Knowing Jeff, it's possible that he did inadvertently refer to it as Pralgrad at some point in either the Exile or the Avernum trilogy. I don't really feel like going on a fishing expedition tonight, though.

One could of course use some kind of tool to look through the program - after all, if it is possible to unearth Anaximander's "easter egg" with that, it should be possible to find a mention of "Pralgrad" if one is there.

Like you, I don't have the time to look, though.

The first and only reference to Pralgad in the Exile series is found at E3:
quote:
THE LANDS OF THE EMPIRE |The Empire, blessed power over us all, controls the four known continents. Aizo, the oldest, is the birthplace of the Empire, although the ruling seat is now on the continent of Pralgad.
But who knows, there may be more in the Avernum series.

To the best of my knowledge, the AT only has one reference as well, and it's exactly the same thing. It's definitely Pralgad.

That reminds me, I was wondering why all the custom scenarios take place in "backwater" provinces and valleys. I DARE the next person to make a scenario that takes place in Valorim or main Exile/Avernum! (Of course, I could never for the life of me learn how to do scripting myself. Sorry.)

Re-making dungeons that Jeff has already made sucks. I know, because I did it for three dungeons in Bahssikava, and it's really lame.

If someone could make the scenario editor capable of importing the floors and terrains directly from an Avernum game, though, it would be a lot more likely.

It's also more fun and exciting to make your own terrain. If you look carefully at all three Avernums, you'll notice that A3 has nothing at all in common with A1 or A2, and that A1 and A2 have more differences than are strictly necessary or even logical.

—Alorael, who would like to point out that Valorim is a backwater, or at least a rough frontier, and that Avernum is even less settled and subdued.

It's mentioned in Exile/Avernum 2, when you see a statue of Prazac in Empire lands.

Aixo is a mutation of Aizo from far in the future after a nuclear holocaust (Arena plotline only :P )

I remember Alec played a character named Lena Xao in some RP ("Gethein Deludere?"). I *think* he mentioned her being Aixoan, with an x, but I'm not sure.

Ms. Xao was also one of Alec's characters in the Arena RP, and she was indeed an Aixoan.

Aw, Prazac! How did I miss that? :D
But it's, again, in Exile III. This is what she answers when asked about her "Name":
quote:
"I am Prazac, Empress of the Eternal Empire, Scion of Pralgad, Highest Lady of Vantanas, Mistress of Valorim. Welcome to Blackcrag Fortress."
As for the statues, they may tell more in A2, but in Exile II the texts are:
quote:
This is a statue of a young, smiling woman, looking almost touchingly innocent. Strange. The plaque at the base reads "Empress Prazac - Long may she reign."
and, even shorter
quote:
A plaque at the base of this rough statue reads: "Empress Prazac - Long may she reign!"

I spot two interesting points there.

1. "The Eternal Empire", capitalized... doesn't that mean it's a proper title? Allegedly, it's not the "Empire of Something" or the "Something Empire", because "there's no need for fancy names". But I guess it's not supposed to be a name.

2. "Scion of Pralgad, Highest Lady of Vantanas, Mistress of Valorim." A "Scion" is a descendant. Unlike the older Imperial houses (Sol, Ironclad, Baltimore?), who are allegedly of Aizoan origin, Prazac has Pralgadian ancestors.

3. "Highest Lady of Vantanas, Mistress of Valorim." No mention of Aizo, although she includes Vantanas which is barely settled. If she indeed is a Scion of Pralgad, does she harbor some kind of contempt/resentment for Aizo? What would that mean for the "Golden Age" that is often proposed to have begun with her reign?

"Grad" means city in old Russian and is often used in city names. (Leningrad = city of Lenin, Volgagrad = city near Volga river, etc.)

PS "Gad" (or I guess "gud") is a Russian word for disgusting creature (slime, snake, etc.), so I prefer the name Pralgrad. :)

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.

Because it's easier and more fun to make something small and dangerous than something big and boring.

But there are BoE scenarios that take place in more settled places. At the Gallows occurs on Pralgad.

Arancaytar, I think most possible "Eternal Empire" is the 'province' name of Aizo. I don't know if Jeff has ever made an study on medieval Diplomatics, but many kings and emperors of this age named themselves "King of This-Land, Duke of This-Other-One, Count of Far-Island" and so on. And the name of the land (continent) may be different of the political unit's name.

I am pretty sure it's Aizo and Pralgad.

I thought the same thing.

I'm actually working on a scenario taking place in a MAYOR port city of Aizo (of my creation). Of course, because of the demans of making a sceario in a cosmopolitan city, things are going pretty slow. I have made 60% of the plotline, about 10% of the actual game and about 5 custom graphics. Be warned, this scenario will have a very small outdoors. Most of the action takes place within the big city itself.

(Making a whole province would be suicide or would most likely result in a lame scenario.)

Oh my, THANK YOU and thank the Lord for wonderful 5-karma gamers like you who are able to make scenario after imposible-to-script scenario so that loosers like me can sit on our duffs for a little bit longer of our pathetic, wasted lives!

I truly can't wait for it to come out! Give me your address and I'll order a pizza for you!!!
