About topicality: the interpretation of that particular rule (which reads, "Repeated posting of off-topic material on non-General forums") usually is that the posts must be badly of the current topic of the conversation of the thread (not its original intended topic) or completely off the topic of the board. Conversational drift is regarded as fine and natural. In General, randomness is tolerated within reason. I feel as though I should say something constructive and usefully on-topic, but looking back at the past few previous posts, I'm not sure that I can. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Something like this... If you want it only to trigger when you're between certain areas, you can just through in an "if" that depends on char_loc_x and char_loc_y. I missed this yesterday, but is anyone else amused by the mixed metaphor in the that Jack Chick link? quote:The image in my head is of a multi-lane escalator. You have to be around for while, show that you're trustworthy, and demonstrate that you know the rules before you're given the chance to be a moderator. You can't get a custom title unless an admin feels particularly nasty and inflicts one on you. It's almost never the one that you want, though. EDIT: Yeah, what Stareye said. I've had this happen, for reasons that I could never really track down. I can tell you how to do it on a Mac. Download the latest version (the one with a GUI), open it up, use the file menu to open the files you want to check, and look for error messages. For Windows, you actually need to use the command line, though, and I have no idea how that works. So if you have access to both, I recommend using the Mac. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Um, no. GMT is eight hours ahead of me, and I live in California. EST is GMT - 5. So if I'm not mistaken, 10 p.m. EST (in New York) is 4 a.m. in the Netherlands. I think I figured out once that mid-to-late afternoon on a Saturday in the U.S. is best, because 2 p.m. PST is 5 p.m. EST, 10 p.m. GMT, and even a fairly reasonable 11 p.m. for our Dutch and German friends, while it manages to be 9 a.m. for the folks in Sydney (not sure where precisely our Aussies are from). We'd cut out anybody living in, er, Russia, the Middle East, or India, but I think that would manage to be almost convenient for everyone. The designer's own page is usually your best bet for this sort of thing. And if that doesn't work, I can send you a copy. quote:Out of the approximately three hundred I can verify the existence of (or fewer, I guess, since some of those are utilities), there are many. With regard to BoA, though, a few things: 1. Probably a quarter of released scenarios right now are set outside of Avernum. I agree: this is an extremely low proportion, especially given BoE's early scenarios (RotS, Tatter, etc.). I think that BoA has to open up to new settings. I wouldn't discount what has been done so far, though: Lord Putidus is set on Earth, Emerald Mountain is set somewhere that feels very non-Avernumy, etc. 2. You found A3 too linear? It's possible that you and I mean entirely different things with the word. More at 3. 3. Multiple major goals (which I think is what you mean by multiple endings — when I hear "multiple endings," I think A Small Rebellion or Geneforge) is fun, but it requires a BIG scenario. Bear in mind that the largest scenarios yet made have twenty or twenty-five towns and little outdoors; Avernum 1 was between five and ten times that big, depending on how you estimate it. When we eventually have scenarios of that magnitude — it may be three or four years from now, if not longer — then I agree that multiple major goals would be nice, but I'm not sure how practical that is for now. 4. The short scenarios get "philosophical" because they're made by TM. :P If you don't like this, don't worry: as other scenarios get made by other people, they won't sound anything like TM scenarios. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
