Ok so I have to write an essay for an application... That actual writing isn't the problem, I just have yet to think of something worth writing about. "On a seperate sheet of paper, write a 500-750 word essay discussing a current intellectual, social, or political issue you feel is important." So if any of you have any ideas for something along those lines, lemme know. I'd rather stay away from politics, however. -------------------- DEMON PLAY, DEMON OUT! I don't get it. The request is that you write about something you feel is important. It sounds like someone wants to get an idea a bit about who you are and what concerns you in life. Do you feel strongly about nothing? Isn't getting ideas for "things important to you" kind of defeating the purpose? For instance, if I were to write such an essay, I would probably write about problems with gender roles, materialism, and social disconnection in America, because these things concern me and are poignant to me. Mabye if you focus on thinking about the sorts of things you personally care about, it will be easier to come up with something, instead of trying to come up with a "good topic" or one you imagine the recipient wants to see. quote:Let's be real here. What do I care about? Booze, women, and violent television. That doesn't really make a good essay. Stareye, that's a nice list. I would go for the "Economic Development of China", but I doubt I know much more about it other than 'it sounds interesting'. I was trying my hardest to avoid a one-sided religious bashing, but that may be my only choice. Or how about the whole Jack Thompson thing? -------------------- DEMON PLAY, DEMON OUT! quote:Maybe you could write about the fact that it is not permissible to show alcohol actually being consumed on network American television, but they can show a bullet entering someone's forehead. Or maybe you can complain that there is not enough booze, women, and violence on television. -------------------- A4 Items List A4 Singleton G4 Items List G4 Forging List G4 Insidious Infiltrator NR Items List Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

Wow... sucks to be you, then, if you can't think of a "current intellectual, social, or political issue" more important than "booze, women (sic, sorry), and violent television". Seriously, that kind of essay can't be driven by someone other than yourself. I'd have to say Synergy's suggestion is the best you're going to get, with that set of interests - you could also mention that sex is less permissible than murder - but really, maybe it's time to branch out a bit... -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon Polaris = joy. quote:As far as I am aware, the universities pose these kinds of questions less to evaluate someone's grasp of the English language and essay-writing skill than to screen out people who care about nothing but booze, women, and... etc. So the options are really: Change your interests, pretend to have different interests than you do (that's the most popular one), or find a different university. :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. quote:The Jack Thompson thing might very well be a viable topic. You could write about how America seems to be responding to violent/obscene video games, or tackle the ratings system. Or you could just write about how crazy people like Jack Thompson are. Honestly, that guy deserves to be locked up. He's insane... -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. He lost the last case as well, didn't he? Anyway, Thompson has nothing on Jack Chick. Unfortunately, even the supremely bad D&D-hating power of Jack Chick is nothing to Fred Phelps, the man behind "godhatesfags.com", "godhatesamerica.com" and "godhatessweden.com". -------------------- ~Note : The professional newbie's advice should not be taken seriously, or at all.~ LINKAGE Posts: 364 | Registered: Saturday, January 17 2004 08:00 |

Personally, I can never write essays or anything like that, that're so open. Last time I was given something like that, I ended up starting it "Dear Vladimir the Impaler" and continued it in that vein. Time before I ended up babbling about Jaffa Cakes, Secret Squirrels and ice weasels. Blargh, I say to essays. Posts: 1487 | Registered: Sunday, February 10 2002 08:00 |
