Have you tried entering the battle and the running away instead of standing and fighting? Unless there are many khazis insistently throwing fireballs and such at you, you can probably make it out with your skin intact and your dignity shattered. —Alorael, who otherwise thinks using the editor is the way to go. You can either use the editor to make the battle winnable and then lower your stats again or you can use the editor to return your party to Fort Emergence and go back to somewhere where you won't be killed. As someone who had played no Geneforge games before Geneforge 4, I agree. It's a great game even if you know virtually nothing about the prequels. I'm still an Avernum partisan, but I think Geneforge 4 is probably the objectively best game, if that makes any sense. —Alorael, who really recommends downloading a bunch and trying them all for a few minutes. It costs you nothing but a little time, and it's quite possible that you'll end up registering an enormous number of games. They really range from good to amazing. It's only about 44,000 miles to a communication satellite and back to Earth. That's not quite a quarter of a second. While some of us are quick thinkers, I don't know if anyone but TM could come up with a blistering retort that fast. —Alorael, who supposes it's important to receive a response to information sent, so meaningful two-way communication requires an 89,000 mile trip of half a second plus some time for thinking on the other end. In today's fast-paced world, that might as well be forever. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's also perfectly reasonable to approximate them both as 1. You're within an order of magnitude. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

"Aristotle was a mere maker of lists. Plato was a real philosopher." Bonus points to anyone who can recognize the source of the quote, but I don't think I agree. Their philosophies are very different, but I guess I'll give Aristotle bonus points for natural philosophy despite his failure to invent the scientific method. —Alorael, who also happens to be a big fan of the Poetics, especially the section on comedy. He maintains that it is, in fact, a very avant-garde form of meta-humor. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's Beastslayer. The sword is not useful in itself and a waste of perfectly good mithril for another AP-giving sword from Carmine. Besides, it's more effective to just run past the babies than it is to stop and freeze them all. [Edit: Me kill English good!] —Alorael, who found that was the only point in A3 that he really missed Stealth. Hiding from monsters is not standard Avernum behavior. I'm nominally Jewish, but I try to always celebrate the first evening of Passover with a bread sandwich. That's a slice of bread between two other, preferably different, slices of bread. Mmm. Then I half-heartedly avoid leavened foods, although I just don't see how cereal, which constitutes around 30% of my diet, is leavened. —Alorael, who only kicked half the puppy because the other half was obstructed by the wall against which the puppy was being kicked. Imban was banned and unbanned repeatedly? I think you're thinking of TM, and you're thinking of him much later. I think your TM story details are also a mix of fact, slightly altered fact, and fiction. TM was never, as far as I know, an admin. He also wasn't banned from the Ikonboard. He was a mod for many sections, at at least by the time he was on the UBB he was often called the megamod. Then a banner with a personal attack appeared on the top of Miscellaneous. Scorp and TM were both de-modded for the incident although it seems like TM wasn't really responsible. TM never became a mod again, but he stuck around for several years with a few bannings and reappearances until he happened to catch Jeff's eye in a bad way. The rest is history, and it is history with very little TM in it. —Alorael, who brings you this history hour on behalf of the murky days before the PPP recorded everything for posterity. Sugar is actually a special item, I believe. You have to steal it from the storerooms in Fort Avernum, and completing the quest hurts your reputation. —Alorael, who wouldn't be suprised if some of the supply quests never ended. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The union of Dareva and Slarty has apparently produced two fine children, and Dareva has unilaterally produced Andraste as well. Well, okay. But I have sprung full-grown from MM's head without any help and then produced Tyran by budding? —Alorael, who really wants to know where this tree came from. This is not a happy family. TM couldn't have been responsible for Canning two years ago. He may have talked to people and pulled strings, but he did not personally perform the Canning. I've never tried to keep a roamer around for more than one or two battles, but they're useful. There are plenty of monsters that are highly resistant to fire and/or cold, and if you're going with fire shaping only roamers are a great source of acid damage. —Alorael, who mostly agrees. Rotghroths have their supporters, but they don't seem to be worth the battle shaping investment. Anything likely to die quickly (charged creations) or designed to explode on impact (pyroroamers) just isn't worth the time it takes to shape it. My favorite is still the MentalPlex. TiSP is moderately humorous, but the new Gmail Paper is great. I'm now reading through Glen Cook's Dread Empire trilogy. It's okay, but it has a formal style that doesn't quite work. Cook seems to be at his best when he can be colloquial because he's speaking through a narrating character. quote:Yes. And yes and yes? —Alorael, who may be the only fantasy-lover left who just doesn't think George R. R. Martin is anything special. He read the first two books and got about halfway through the third before losing interest and picking up something else. He almost never puts down a book, either. There's just something about Martin's style and characters that doesn't appeal.
