Really anticipated ideas for A5?? in Avernum 4

The only special abilities that were ever useful were the A3 energy regaining one from Natural Mage, which didn't need any more gravy, and Divine Aid from Divinely Touched. Before A3 there really wasn't any reason to use special abilities.

This is an official warning. Spiderweb has suddenly gone way over its quota of gratuitously and non-humorously obnoxious individuals. Stop or be stopped by ambiguous but menacing threats!

Removing the offensive picture and replacing it with an identical text description wouldn't be productive. That's close enough without bringing the ADL's attention.

—Alorael, gives Tully more credit than that. If he were going to become part of any group that seized absolute power and started an empire, he'd want one that did a better job.

X might have been the most powerful from day one. He's just too disconnected from reality to be much of a force for anything but anvils.

Aimee is still out there somewhere

Perhaps you also did not notice that this is to be done by letting your music application of choice select songs randomly. It's too easy to do it by selection.

—Alorael, who could probably scrounge together something reasonable. Failing that, he could download himself descriptive music.

I find it easier to memorize many digits of pi than to remember the formulas for approximations.

Also, avoid if strong language offends you. Read if math humor does not.

It's underground in the chitrach warrens. It's in the northwestern part of one of the more eastern map sections if I remember it right.

I almost made the same post, but then I realized that Erika and Rentar wouldn't get along precisely because they're so similar. They're too independent and even self-centered. I imagine neither one would handle equals or superiors well at all. And Rentar is too much of a human-hater to get along with Erika, who can't even manage to get along with her fellow human beings.

—Alorael, who wonders what the world is like with its three premier spellcasters dead. Who gets to rise to the top without Rentar, Garzahd, and Erika around? Maybe some fresh blood?

I'd expect a movie about pi to be released in exactly eight years, but ? has already been made. Maybe the sequel will be made.

I had a post, but it has been lost to the vagaries of the internet. I'll state it more briefly.

1. Do creations advance normally when you add HD, or do they just get HP? If they do advance, they still need a creature type. Are they magical beasts?

2. A shaper with 16 constitution gets 8 essence per level even if you ignore bonuses. That's a creation with as many HD as the shaper and 7 extra points per level or two creations with 3 extra points. Doesn't that open the door to making creations far more powerful than any PC should be at a given level? It seems to get worse as levels increase.

—Alorael, who doesn't even particularly need to play with stats and feats and such. Anything with 80 strength has a problem. At the very least the costs for ability boosts need to be non-linear. Maybe take a hint from Spiderweb and have the cost increase by one for every two points spent.

Civ II taught me that the Sioux conquered a Pangaea-like landmass after a long and brutal war against the allied French and Carthaginians, so you might want to take that history with a grain of salt.

This is going to be an odd exercise...

This song will be playing when I meet the love of my life:
Bach Cello Suite #1 in G

Right now, I feel:
Poco Adagio by Dvorak. I don't actually know which symphony it's from.

What makes me happy is:
First movement of Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Sure, I guess winter is nice.

My love of life was inspired by the song:
Mozart's Symphony #32 in G.

My message to the world has always been:
Hirtengesang, Frohe Und Dankbare Gefuhle Nach Dem Sturm: Allegretto. At least it's words...

Next time I'm in front of a crowd, I'll say:
Death or Glory. It makes sense and it's not classical!

My friends see me as:
3rd movement of Winter. I guess I am what I like.

When I'm drunk I say:
Telemann concerto in E minor

My alter-ego is:
Allegretto from Eine Kleini Nachtmusik

My deepest secret is:
AudioTrack 12. It's recorder music, but I have no idea what it's from. I guess confusion and recorder are passable secrets.

My day will be like:
First movement of Spring. How nice! Also the third Four Seasons movement to come up. Um?

When I'm in the shower, I sing:
Burning Man by Third Eye Blind. Also not classical, and I have no idea where it came from.

My favorite thing to do is:
"Same."

My parents are like the song:
Protecting My Devotion. Well, okay...

My ultimate song for dancing is:
Little Razor Blade by the Pink Spiders. Uh...

At my wedding they'll play:
Bourrée Presto from Music for the Royal Fireworks. Kind of nice, actually.

The story of my life is:
Adagio from Vivaldi's Concerto #4 in A minor

My innermost desire is:
Haydn's Symphony #104.

To cheer myself up I sing:
Ralph Vaughan Williams Symphony #4: Allegro. Actually rather difficult to sing.

At my funeral they'll play:
Andante doloroso by Fritz Kreisler. Completely appropriate.

—Alorael, who thinks his music speaks volumes about him. Pun intended!

[Edit: xkcd is a wonderful comic, but this was in fact inspired by an unrelated conversation. I can't rule out subconscious influence, I guess.]

I think there's a good chance you're basing the balance of the shaper on a prestige class that's also broken. I also think you're reaching for the wrong balancing mechanism. Instead of capping lower, give a limited list of spells that can be used. Maybe make them usable only so often.

For instance, at a certain shaper level, you can make a baton that casts fireball once per hour. At the same level you could maybe make a baton that launches a single 1d4+1 magic missile at will.

—Alorael, who thinks anything at will is dangerous unless it's far below what normally gets used at your level. Unlimited healing is quite possibly unbalanced even if it's just repeated cure light wounds. There's still no explanation for when or how you get a 5 HD creation as opposed to a 1 HD one.

A lower cap is a terrible balancing mechanism if progression is still as fast. If it's slower it might work, but... Harm and Heal at will? Or even the more thematically appropriate Summon Monster? I question the balance strenuously, and I haven't even gone looking hard for broken combos.

I also justify needed HD requirements to give them certain spell-like(and other) abilities by saying that the HD represent how strong lv wise the creature is(a fact actually established in the Monster Manual) and that a level one creature shouldn't be able to use Fireball, period.
Agreed, but some of these creatures really aren't creatures at all. Something that you make solely to pick up and point at someone and hurl fireballs needs to have a bunch of hit dice?

quote:
And it should be noted that doesn't matter if you have a cure whatever spell going on every round, several people beating the hell out you is still several people beating the hell out of you.

Except now there's really no reason to rest because after combat you're fully healed. And healing every round is not nearly the scariest thing that can be done.

—Alorael, who still doesn't have an answer to his real question. You haven't explicitly stated how many hit dice creations get, and that's important both for regular shapers and for broken Wand of Repeated Death shapers.

Blackcrag requires two of the easier quests and two of the harder quests: slimes or roaches and troglos/giants or golems.

—Alorael, who wonders what exactly the Empire does if, say, Rentar is defeated but there are still bugs infested Bigail and golems chopping their way through the northeast. Does Prazac just send in her infinitely large army?

Shapers are terrible at fighting so you should have to be a fighter before you can shape? I don't get it.

—Alorael, who has just noticed those last two little abilities in the shaping list, and they scream broken. Fireball and cure [severity] wounds at will? Not okay! He also can't figure out the mechanics of determining or changing the hit dice of creations or even why something that's just a living triggered fireball-at-will should have hit dice at all.

Since Rentar is only one person, she really wasn't at risk of decimation. Obliteration, maybe.

—Alorael, who wonders why Erika apparently gave up on breaking her curse. As the most powerful mage in the world, apparently, she really should have been able to work out a way to return to the surface.

Learning everything you know by canister seems like it could be a problem. You don't get all the lessons in when and why to do things along with how to do them. On the other hand, I just can't see the downside to giving people, say, greater intelligence through canisters. That's supposing canisters didn't make their users psychotic, anyway.

—Alorael, who is unaware of these "numerous atrocities" committed by the Shapers. This might be because he hasn't played most of the Geneforge games, but it seems like their major crimes are complete control and limiting access to shaping. It's not as though they routinely slaughter their own citizens. Life under the Shapers in fact seems rather prosperous and happy.

It's Grindstone, Formello, Cotra. If you can't enter the door in the chitrach warrens under Cotra you haven't finished the one by Formello.

—Alorael, who supposes its worth pointing out that killing the skeleton in the Formello test doesn't count as a victory. The only criterion for winning is taking a certain amount of damage over several rounds. That means that invulnerability also isn't going to help.

Not in fact a totally different experience, because that's not the point. It's a similar but improved and expanded experience!
