I am filled with glee! —Alorael, who would be disappointed if Rentar didn't play at least a moderately important background role in A5 even though she's dead. She has, after all, been more or less central to three out of four prior Avernum games. Actually, it was jarring to have Erika's absence be so unimportant in A5. It would help if there were any conceivable reason to go there. Polaris, Desperance, and Shadow Vale have the satellite niches pretty well covered. I just can't imagine why I'd ever want to go to a new board that's in a long line of new boards that went nowhere. —Alorael, who must be getting old. There was a time when he could be enthusiastic about five boards and two secret conspiracies at once. Now he'd rather just sit in his rocking chair and reminisce. Yes, this sounds like a good time to try deleting and reinstalling the game. —Alorael, who does have to offer congratulations for causing the game to go impressively wrong. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I took that one to be a humorous twist on "long live the monarch" because Ghaldring is so all-powerful and such that he's like a title. Actually, Monarch is the one who's like a title, or at least like a monarch. —Alorael, who acknowledges that he should know enough French to realize that "las" isn't one of its articles. Suya culpa. I know no French at all, but I'm pretty sure you need to conjugate differently and use a plural article for Takers. Vivent las Takers? —Alorael, who realizes this is very tangential. He's not sorry. Language is important. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Apple-O on a Mac or (I think) control-O on a PC doesn't do it? It's probably a bug. —Alorael, who can't imagine that it's an old copy problem. Even the oldest version of A3 should have the same loading capabilities as A1 and A2. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Every Spiderweb game could have been improved. A4 is the one that needs it the most, though. Well, that and the non-Subterra third-party games, but they're mostly lost causes. Lost Souls at least had potential. —Alorael, who doesn't think Blades even belongs in polls like this. Scenario editors and playing others' scenarios is too different from one man's game efforts. (By that logic Subterra shouldn't be there either, but you can't have everything.) Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Nethergate's is the best. A2's is the second best. A3's has always bothered me for some reason, and A4's doesn't match the game and gets old very, very quickly. —Alorael, who has recently had reason to notice that the A4 intro should never be looped. Servile. I'm rather fond of opposable thumbs. —Alorael, who actually gets the feeling that drakons and possibly drayks have thumbs too. It's hard to run a lab without hands, and after all this self-shaping they'd probably get around to improved digits eventually. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Shapers get power, wealth, respect, and creature comforts. Rebels get mud, hate, and killed by Shapers. I'll take the former, thanks. —Alorael, who would really prefer to be a Shaper far away from the rebellion. Actually, being a rebel far away from the rebellion wouldn't be so bad either, although he'd feel slightly hypocritical. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I'd say you're preaching to the choir by posting that on Spiderweb, but most of Spiderweb would be offended by having serious politics linked to religion. —Alorael, who isn't sure he believes in a right to delcare oneself "non-American." Being proud of your country because it's your country is foolish, but refusing to take responsibility for your country is equally foolish. Citizenship is an obligation to fix the corruption. Ask not what your country can do for you and all that. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The end of A3 is easy. Rentar's keep is right under Blackcrag and when she blasts a hole to the surface to expose Erika to sunlight the unknown mage in Prazac's employ doesn't even have to do anything fancy. He's got a perfectly good line of sight to the heroic quartet that needs teleportation and their destination in the throneroom! —Alorael, who will conveniently ignore the fact that the same teleportation occurs if you don't have Erika's help and there is therefore no such hole to the surface. If you really want to find flaws in his brilliant hypothesis you'll have to look elsewhere. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The point of the idea is to make a real penalty for choosing non-human characters. Getting around the penalty defeats the pupose completely. Vahnatai don't seem to wear armor, but they're also clearly not frail. They are, in fact, some of the toughest fighters in Avernum. Why couldn't they wear armor? Mass might be a problem, but the vahnatai can probably come up with some magical light-weight crystal armor that's better than anything humans use and fifty times as expensive. —Alorael, who isn't even sure that sliths should be considered generally unclothed and unarmored. The sprites are all naked, but one of the PC pictures has a slith in clothes and it just doesn't seem reasonable for sliths to be dangerous fighters if they have no armor and no other way of not getting stabbed frequently. Just because you can make a poll does not mean you should make a poll. Actually, that goes for most kinds of posting, but polls most of all. —Alorael, who has had several ideas for new threads to start and even a genuinely marginally interesting poll. Then he realizes that he'd be destroying his carefully cultivated image as one who starts no threads and refrains. Inertia is a terrible thing. The old theme currently looks like it's in. And so does another old theme. —Alorael, who honestly would rather not get new music when the old Nethergate music is so perfect. The only improvement he'd want is a full-length version. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You can't always count on end-of-game deus ex machina wizardry, though. —Alorael, who is always confused by teleportation in Avernum. Sometimes it seems trivial. Sometimes nobody can teleport out of Avernum without going to inordinate lengths to collect gadgets and locations and such. Is there an anti-teleportation barrier twenty feet below sea level? It's the Little Fugue in G Minor. It's by Bach and you can find much better renditions of it online. Even legally! —Alorael, who approves of any game that uses Bach as its soundtrack. That really includes most games without music, though, thanks to the miracle of iTunes. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Battle creations have the inertia of four games behind them now, so I don't think the core creations will be getting any overhauls. They do need some way to become the equals of the other two types, though. I'm sure Jeff will work on it in G5. Unstable creations were an experiment. Unless Jeff is really fond of them I doubt they'll return. —Alorael, who very much likes the idea of support creations. Healing is probably unbalanced because creations lack essence, but trading in part of your essence pool to have an improved way to bless, haste or otherwise improve your party would be an interesting mechanic. The balancing would be tricky, but if it worked it would be fun. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

We don't know Kelner is a powerful wizard, but we also don't know that he isn't. He's clearly not terribly ambitious, but there could be an archmage lurking under the paperwork. Avernum needs a few who aren't magically maintained semi-senile corpses. —Alorael, who noticed that Rone has actually been improving over the course of the series. In A1 he was barely functional. In A2 he was at least clearly conscious. In A4 he's literally got a new lease on life and he makes sense for the first time in decades. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

As Thuryl said, getting the goodies by using canisters sparingly just seems wrong. You should either have to avoid canisters entirely or just go for them all. Having delayed canister effects would just encourage going online for spoilers, but having canisters give abilities in order is a fairly good idea. I haven't really noticed any specifically placed canisters abilities anyway. —Alorael, who could even see a mix. You'll always find a Strength canister in one place, but it's next to two other canisters that give whatever abilities come next in your progression.
