Trick for maximizing skill points in a new game. in Nethergate

And if you're really in a bug-exploitation frame of mind, you can boost specific circles past your general druidism level. This is more helpful with Celts, of course, but it should work for Romans as well.

First, raise your intelligence so that you have at least one bonus point of Druidism because of high intelligence. Then raise any or all circles to be equal to your Druidism level. Then lower intelligence until Druidism is lower than the specific circles. Once you've done that, you can raise the circles without paying any attention to druidism. As long as druidism never becomes equal to the circle.

With this trick, you can start your druids off with no druidism or intelligence but extremely impressive spell repetoires. In particular, it's easy to have Hero of Old from the beginning.

—Alorael, who just discovered this while replaying in v1.0. If this has already been known, he's sorry for being redundant. And if it is known, it probably doesn't work in later versions, either.

Jeff has already said that he won't make specific dropping possible because of the extra click required. Suggestions on how to avoid the click were ignored. The fact that this was already programmed for Nethergate was ignored.

—Alorael, who wouldn't get his hopes up. Jeff seems to believe that adventurers don't believe in organization.

Blades of Avernum News and a Sample Script in Blades of Avernum

I don't remember Jeff ever saying explicitly he will include cinematics, but they can already be made in BoE. It takes a long time, but it's possible.

The scripting system is more for use in special encounters than for altering the mechanics of the game. By editing monster stats and weapon stats it should be possible to approximate the old combat system, but weapons from other scenarios would be overpowered and it probably wouldn't be exact. I miss the old system too, but I think the best solution is just to make the monsters much tougher.

I don't know about permanent modifiers, but you could set up areas where a script called automatically every few turns casts some effect on your party, effectively making it permanent for the duration of the fight. It will probably be possible to do the same thing with monsters, but I don't know for certain. Permanent status equipment seems more unlikely, but it may be possible.

—Alorael, who would also like to see targeting for custom spells appear. Jeff seems set against it, though, and it probably would be at least a minor hassle to program. Jeff wants to avoid engine changes at any cost as well.

The Dragon Ball Z references were a bit too subtle, though. If you make a sequel, you should put in more and make them far more obvious.

—Alorael, who doesn't know if he can in good conscience actually post this. Wait, he never had a good conscience in the first place...

New Spells in BoA please? in Blades of Avernum

Fine, but please don't revive topics that were dead for months to tell us.

—Alorael, who likes the untargetability of invisible monsters. Since you can't use huge area spells to locate them (where the damage appears) and you can't hit them with ranged attacks at all, invisible monsters are far more challenging in Avernum.

Use of Nethergate graphics in "Blades of Avernum"? in Blades of Avernum

Nethergate graphics are actually identical to Avernum graphics, since the Avernum engine is simply the Nethergate engine enhanced a bit. Most of the graphics from Nethergate have also already appeared in Avernum, although one or two items and a handful of monsters, particularly humanans and sidhe, could be transferred.

—Alorael, who still thinks the Nethergate/A1 goblins are better than A2/A3 goblins. Goblins were never meant to be red. Green or peach, yes, but not red.

I believe Jeff already said he wouldn't do this, or at least ignored previous requests for a feature similar to this. It would be nice, but it probably won't happen.

—Alorael, who would be happy to settle for items with special flags that can be transferred from one scenario to another. This seems almost as unlikely, and it could lead to all sorts of weird plot bugs from scenarios that use the same flags.

Probably not. It's really just extra work for Jeff to save us a small amount of effort. Avernum's "class" system has never been its strong point anyway, so making custom party members works well enough.

—Alorael, who would would not mind seeing at least a little bit more actual impact of starting class on the game, just because high level parties all tend to fall into one of a few groups. If a rebel were actually different from a soldier at level 40, it would be worth using something besides endless custom characters.

When you switch names, the UBB sometimes keeps your old name reserved for a month. Nobody else is using it and nobody else can use it, but you'll have to wait for a while before you can switch back.

—Alorael, who isn't exactly sure why this happens or why sometimes it's easy to switch back and sometimes it isn't. Just be patient and try again every few days.

BoA Graphics Database Questions in Blades of Avernum

You can get away with breaking most copyrights with BoE/BoA. Your scenario probably isn't a commercial product, so nobody is going to accuse you of profiting off of their intellectual property. In fact, chances are nobody will check at all. Make a tonberry and call it a fish-man and everyone is satisfied.

—Alorael, who actually thinks GIFTS's is correct. An abbreviation made plural has an apostrophe. Maybe. But since nobody is sure and it looks very strange, GIFTS is the safest choice.

GIFTS is both the singular and plural form. The ending S makes the singular confusing, but Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking isn't enough information. A talking roach is a GIFT roach, but it isn't a GIFTS.

—Alorael, who supposes that you could say that there is one GIFTS accompanied by a pair of GIFTS's, but that looks odd and probably would only cause more confusion.

BOA Release date. in Blades of Avernum

It's currently being programmed, but we don't know how far along Jeff is. It's expected to be released sometime at the end of this year.

—Alorael, who would say that BoA isn't that far along since Jeff is probably focusing on Geneforge 2 right now for an earlier release. Once that's done, he can work on finishing Boa.

No, the nudity could be worked in more subtlely, if no more tastefully, by having random clothes destruction during the fight between Erika and Rentar-Ihrno. You know, sooner or later those fireballs and magical blasts have to take a toll on one's apparel.

—Alorael, who also supposes the movie could add a steamy romance between, say, Erika and Solberg. No, it doesn't make sense. It's gratuitous!

Save problem with Averum. in Tech Support

I know this problem has appeared before, but I can't remember exactly what causes it. I think it has to do with Avernum giving your save files the wrong file extension or putting them in the wrong place. Look around for misnamed or misplaced files, and hopefully you can get back to your current save.

—Alorael, who thinks someone should notify Jeff of the bug and its solution so they can be added to Spiderweb tech support. Enough people run into this that it deserves mention.

Some Other Things About BoA in Blades of Avernum

BoE already allows towns to be imported, but the ability to copy and paste smaller sections of terrain and to do it outside as well as inside would be nice.

I meant that the information about stored characters could either be handled as variables like BoE's special flags, which would make it scenario-based, or it could be saved like currently-used characters. ould probably be easier to program, but Jeff might make the decision based on balance.

—Alorael, who has noticed that what Jeff considers necessary for balance often includes things that scenario designers think they should be able to balance themselves. Basically, it all comes down to what Jeff decides to do, and that probably won't be influenced much by discussion here.

But the ability to conveniently deposit PC's would ruin all the neat character-reading tricks used to figure out how many party members there are or other things like that.

Hopefully all of that will be covered by BoA scripts, or such scenarios might be forced to leave out character storage altogether just to prevent players from cheating by retrieving characters.

—Alorael, who also thinks that savefile-based storage would ruin Drakey's storage idea. If there can only be so many spaces in a savefile, which there probably would be, then no matter how many areas you make there's a hard limit on PC storage.

Exile; A movie? in The Exile Trilogy

To keep the Exile style, it would be fitting to have one character per monster graphic except in cases when that doesn't work, like in a scene with dozens of goblins or townsfolk milling about in droves. Still, one guy playing all the triad mages (male and female) and identical blacksmiths would definitely be fitting.

—Alorael, who supposes this means the actors for these "generic" roles would have to be as average and nondescript as possible. Maybe an entire cast of people who are virtually unknown would do the job well.

Whatever it is, I can't imagine reporting it will do anything. Jeff has made it abundantly clear that no more work will be done on BoE.

Leonardo DiCaprio would make an excellent Chevyn. It's a role so bad that no amount of botching can ruin it.

Jenneke could be played by Michael Jackson. It's a different kind of scary ambiguity, but nobody else could take the role without equal plastic surgery and makeup.

—Alorael, who isn't familiar with enough actors to cast many roles. However, it's obvious that at least one vahnatai has to be Drakefyre, and Alec would probably make a good vahnatai as well.

Couple of Questions about BoA in Blades of Avernum

In terms of terrain and plot, you can create anything you'd like. However, you'll be limited to the same tile system and probably the same terrain tiles, so your world will closely resemble the Avernum world visually.

For an idea of how a new world can be created, download Blades of Exile and fiddle with the scenario editor. You could even buy it (yes, it's a great buy, cheap for the hours of fun you'll get out of it, buy it!) and play other people's scenarios to get an idea of how a new world can be created. Blades of Avernum will be similar, except obviously it will use the Avernum engine.

—Alorael, who supposes one could, with some work, even come up with a scenario that takes place in a futuristic setting. Such large departures from the Avernum setting would be difficult, but they will (probably) be possible.

Exile; A movie? in The Exile Trilogy

As I've said in all the previous discussions of Exile movies, the Exile plot just doens't lend itself to a non-game format. The characters in your party have no personality, and any created characters would disappoint people whose characters are different. Then there's the way the plot is general and most of your time is spend hacking and puzzling through dungeons or searching for newer, better equipment. This doesn't make for a good movie. The real beauty of the Exile games is the background details Jeff put in about his world, but most of those would be lost in a movie.

—Alorael, who thinks any Exile-based movie would be so different from the games that the die-hard Exile fans (denizens of these boards) would be up in arms over the changes.

You can read the posts in the Galactic Core forum for a general idea of how many people like the game and how many people detest it. I can think of only three or four people who registered it and only one or two who like it.

—Alorael, who would say it is important if you have a Mac or not. Since the game only runs on Mac, having one is pretty much essential to playing.
