There is a big political tradition on General. Specifically, a big leftist political tradition. RC: Rightists calling the left wing knee-jerk is so very funny and I wish you could see it that way. Also, I was right about the WMDs. :D -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Enh, I'd put 'I am dead for you' as 'je suis mort pour toi' / 'pour vous'. 'Je suis la Mort pour t/v' would add the needed article. And one must remember that in French, Death is feminine -- you do not say 'le Mort', I don't think. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. A word of warning: it may do well to buy an English-localized version, as I'm told that Paradox, while well-meaning, is very bad at translations into some languages; it goes from humorously poor to in some places gameplay-threatening (example: in the French localization of Victoria, 'timber' and 'lumber', two different resources, are both called 'bois' -- some confusion there!). If your English is good enough to deal with it, the English localization is likely to be a good deal more coherent than the Spanish one. For the specifics of that, you'd have to ask someone who's played both, but I know for a fact that the English version gets more patches. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. To return to my poor, undernourished topic: If I had to recommend one, Europa Universalis II. It's the oldest of the titles I'm familiar with and thus the cheapest, it has fewer moving parts than Hearts of Iron and far fewer than Victoria, and it's the longest of any of them. It takes a LONG time to get used to, but it's very fun. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

'conation' was a word coined by Beckett; using his favorite word, 'con', and -ation, meaning roughly 'to do rigorously'. Translated, it means being a 'con' for sport. If you don't speak French, you're missing out here. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

I find the positive sentiments towards China as it becomes more economically liberal somewhat savage: basically, we do not much care whether or not its people are oppressed, we just care whether or not they're being oppressed by communists. A capitalist oligarchy in China would, by the general enthusiasm for anything the PROC does to distance itself from Maoist economics, be A-OK. No need to politically liberalize the People's Republic as long as it's economically tied to the West. Sickening and greedy. Unfortunately, that's how it goes. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Wow. Just wow. Thanks for the information on that one. Don't worry about the quadruple-post. Interesting stuff, very much so. Trust me when I say that stream-of-consciousness is only irritating when you're trying to fill space with nothing to say. That's definitely not the case here. quote:If you're calling most of the countries you sort of people like to call communist communist, explain how any beaureaucrats voted in the Soviet Union or the DPRK. :P BSC: I understand a dislike for Chavez, but the site you linked to has a number of ominous links -- namely, the sort that suggest they'd be in favor of a corporatist-minority coup attempt such as 2001's (2000's? 2002's? I forget when it happened). There's also something faintly galling about attacking a president for putting money into 'populist social programs' -- in other words, you're faulting the leader of a democratic country for active populism? Claims that election figures are unreliable in 'authoritarian regimes' are a HUGE red flag, because frankly I trust very few people when talking about 'authoritarian regimes' -- I've heard countries such as Germany called 'authoritarian' and countries such as Japan called 'model democracies'! -- and because in the absence of serious, provable corruption, decrying election results as inaccurate is only acceptable if the margin of error is very small. Furthermore, they complain about absenteeism of 35% -- a lower figure than average, unless I'm horribly mistaken, and an inevitable result of the democratic process. You have an open if skeptical audience here: what has Chavez done? How is he 'authoritarian', and how is he a serious threat to Venezuela? I can understand a difference in ideology, but apparently baseless accusations of corruption, autocracy, and theft I tend to view with a large level of suspicion, even coming from people I agree with politically. A good A4 would be awful. It would be yet another Vogelian gesture of contempt towards the BoE community; they suffered for years under Exile's limitations because Jeff abandoned Exile, with the basic assumption that Exile was the community's now. The Avernum games always stuck in my craw, and making an Avernum 4 would really hurt -- he said he wouldn't make it for Exile. And really, what's he going to do for plot? Looking at Geneforge, his writing skills haven't changed much -- it'll probably be the Vahnatai, or the Sliths, or demons, or the Empire, doing something dastardly for no good reason. Here's to hoping it's Nethergate 2, I guess. Far be it for me to tell Mr. Vogel which of his lovely little cash cows to milk dry. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. The Old Testament is one example of many of a sort of history that existed before the idea of formalized history. Others include the Greek and Chinese heroic myths. The idea was to tell an interesting story as well as preserving the past, and push some kind of moral. American history written the same way would involve God smiting Robert Lee and Thomas Jackson for slavery, and Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill tag-teaming Hitler, mind, so it's good to view the Good Book with a bit of historical skepticism. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest.
