A project whose first fork precedes the first roadmap sounds kind of doomed. And a fork is a bad thing when the project is centrally hosted. --- So if I understand this darcs thing correctly, it's like CVS and SVN except that you aren't committing to a single repository but to several separate ones. Do all changes need to be pushed to all the available repositories? Or what happens if there are more than, say, 2-3 repositories out there? If anyone can host their own repository - what's the difference between a checked-out working copy and a repository? Can a code base be both at once, or is there still a client-server structure in spite of the decentralization? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but Wikipedia can only take you so far and I've never heard of darcs before... Um... now I feel dumb. Back when I was beta-testing, I'm sure I ran into some blue cold things only a few bends down the underground river from the start. I could've sworn they were hydras.. I guess they were lizards or some other manner of reptiles, and I remember it wrong. But I remember that they were badass. Edit: So badass, in fact, that they reminded me of the swamp hydras from Ancient Domains of Mystery. Mystery solved. The poll may be dumb, but then most polls is a useless weight attached to an otherwise interesting topic. Please don't spam it up. quote:Or that we sometimes just get rotten luck. Yeah, I did retry many battles (especially in Bahssikava), and I did them differently the next time. But there was one battle in Exodus where I depended on luck. The ice hydras were badass. I could sometimes get one of them with one shot of Adlerauge and one razordisk, but sometimes they had a few hitpoints left to pwn me in the next turn. Roughly each round that I didn't take out one ice hydra would equate to one dead party member in the end. I ended up reloading until I got through without casualties. Not much strategy about that... The irony about this is that it's been done before (in a manner of speaking), I was on the list of contenders as well, but the thing didn't live long enough for me to actually be in a match then either. <_< -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I have no real qualms with breaking compatibility of new scenarios with old game versions. Now, old scenarios with new game versions is another matter, since updating ancient works whose designers have disappeared is virtually impossible. But the shift to open source will likely mean an end to CD-distributed and pretty much any other media that isn't downloaded from the net (who'd produce and store them?), and since the game is completely free, it's no big hassle to re-download and re-install the game. Of course, we would need to implement compatibility checking so it actually tells the user that they need to update, instead of breaking randomly. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. There are many, and they are good. And the best way to play high-level scenarios is to use a party that has already played through low and medium-level scenarios to reach a high level. However, there is also a tool (well, a scenario) that can beef up your party to a high level immediately. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Speaking of repositories: I can host Subversion (SVN) projects if needed. I haven't yet looked at the code, but I'm a bit surprised that the node limit is so closely entwined with the scenario format... -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. The "increase by another 200" sounds a bit messy to me. Could we instead have an option (perhaps even a global setting) that says "turn off node limits"? It's a useful safeguard for inexperienced designers (though perhaps increase it to 500 or so), but if they know what they're doing... We can have another check in the game that asks whether the game should allow this setting, with the default set to a warning - "The designer of this scenario has [...]. Do you wish to proceed?". So the player has some idea what they're getting into. My bet is that Jeff copy-pasted without proofreading very carefully. It happens. Exile III rejects corrupted save files with the message that "this is not an Exile II save file", for example. Well, I have no chance of stopping the file from being overwritten, but the files are only kept for safety anyhow. quote:Topic-specific changes are not yet fully taken care of. PPP archives all pages in a flat file cache, but also parses them and stores the posts in a database. The files get overwritten of course. What happens to edited posts in the database - whether they get stored as new revisions or overwritten - isn't yet implemented. Up till now (and for quite a while yet) every topic only gets saved once, so I haven't had to deal with that. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Oh really? What did you save? I never did collect all of PPP2. What I do have will take a while to line up for "digitizing" into the database from the files I have, but I'd very much like to have the complete archives before I start doing that. :) Edit: Time for a stats table again. PPP1 and PPP2 aren't completely in the database. The former due to errors I haven't fixed yet, the latter because I don't yet have everything. PPP4 is much bigger than PPP3 because it covers the whole forum both times, but only General got purged in the meantime. There is a huge amount of redundancy, but with the space available, that's better than trying to figure out which threads have had new posts (or edited posts) in the meantime. Also, PPP4 isn't actually archived. What is shown above is merely the result of the indexing I just completed. Since there is no urgency, I had this idea of archiving the topics of PPP4 asynchronously, with one topic every five minutes (avoiding overloading the server). This will take over a month, so be patient (I'm not Google :P ).
