Tee hee, Kel got .htaccess-owned.

But seriously, don't freaking post so much will you? How can anyone post a hundred posts a year?

Oops.

Frankly, if you're still using IE on a Mac, you deserve everything you get. (Hell, if you're using IE, period. :P )

Are there actually any websites that try to lock out non-IE browsers that are worth visiting? I've experienced it only with microsoft.com and various malware-infested download sites...

Also, Piperbot appears to enjoy the opportunity to boss me around. I got no less than 12 emails today - I wonder who's looking at all the old polls. Piperbot is programmed to only act when someone actually looks at the site. I have this suspicion he's got a deal set up with Googlebot.

I have finally gotten around to starting The Baroque Cycle with Quicksilver.

Suffice to say that it lives up to all expectations. If anything, it's even more exciting than Cryptonomicon (and definitely better than Snow Crash).

Enoch Root kicks ass.

Good catch. Your topic inspired me, actually. :)

(Incidentally, fun trivia: PPP and Endeavor use separate databases. PPP display member information by querying the public Endeavor API and parsing the XML data. I have much fun with their User-Agent strings when I do that.)

Polls are now properly spidered, archived and displayed. For an example, see http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/topic/1/4327 .

I still haven't put in any error handling for polls that no longer exist or that I didn't vote in.

Well, duh. If you edit a post, how's the bot supposed to notice without re-spidering the entire board? What it stores is the last version of the topic after someone posted, of course.

Surely it is. wordpress.com's server must suffer from a hiccup, because it displays for me. Keep in mind that the URLs in the post are all the same, and thus if the pictures work here, they work there.

I will miss these two boards, but I'm in no hurry to join an imitation. Did it work for Misc? No. Many times over. And Misc actually had a community. It was even more vibrant and spontaneous than General with its lax moderation. So will it work for RWG or SubTerra, where the simple act of posting is a parody on forums and games?

Realize there is nothing about RWG except its aura, and this aura hinges on it being here, being forum #13 and being an official forum for games that few people have ever heard of. It is defined by being a board that is not supposed to exist. Any imitation you create necessarily loses this and is left with nothing but the name.

Don't try to build a replica of R'lyeh in your backyard, that's all I'm saying. :P

First version of poll result catcher done. Now, if you visit a topic at PPP that contains a poll, it will try to get the poll results page from SW.

Assuming that the poll still exists, and that I voted in it (it has to log in as me to see the results after all), it will parse it correctly. I have no deleted poll or one I didn't vote in close to hand, so I haven't tested what happens.

Because I'm still debugging it, right now PPP will only display the parsed poll results. For the time being this means poll topics can't be properly viewed.

For an example, see this:

http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/topic/1/4327

Well, yes we do want to back it up, but yes I also think it can be done this week.

---------------------------------

However, computers aren't perfect, so I encourage all who care about the forum to check these for completeness and errors:

http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/forum/13
http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/forum/14

Remember: If something is missing or broken, it will take hours of effort hunting it down at Google and tedious data entry. By yours truly.

If it is noticed now, while the originals are still there, it is a simple matter of giving the engine a good kick and letting it run over the forum again.

---------

Also, working on getting poll results.

What're these other forums mentioned anyways? I'm not really "in the loop" so to speak, to know about the branch outs from here.

None of them are really worth visiting, except perhaps Desperance and Polaris (but the former is NSFW, and the latter is really slow these days). The rest are relatively short-lived publicity stunts, and unless you go out of your way to get to them, they'll only ever pop up in signatures or threads like this one.

Edit: I forgot about Shadow Vale, which has defied tradition and stayed alive and bustling for several months. But if it survives a year, it's setting a record.

Yes, and you know who I think does the most harassing and belittling around here?

You.

No, really. Look. I've caught you red-handed: insulting other members, speaking derisively of others, and yelling at people! You're out of control! Your reckless behavior must be stopped before it ruins the fun of these boards for everyone. Therefore, I respectfully ask that you leave before you force the administration to ban you.

...

See, throwing around random accusations isn't fun for anyone but yourself. I quite enjoyed myself, though.

Zing!
