Are you sure? Which ones are those?

There are several topics that I've had to put on ice because the files can't be parsed until I improve the parser (it hangs on deleted members), but that's all many months old...

I think I'm entitled; I more or less started it. (Well, it was started by PPP2, before I had charge of it) :P

PPP is not as old as the dawn of time. The first concerted effort to make complete and systematic (though manual) copies of all threads - as opposed to saving a few you liked - was the Pied Piper Project in 2004. (By a funny coincidence, exactly three years ago yesterday, which I only realized just now.)

There was at least one purge that never got archived. On General, this covered all the topics to the low 800s (although a few older topics survived because they were still being posted in then).

This topic might come a bit out of the blue, because this time it wasn't preceded by an "annual board purge" topic. But it is always a good idea to prepare ahead of time - especially since the dark UBB'Nigurath has taken to scheduling unannounced purges itself.

Unlike Endeavorbot, Piperbot doesn't really do much. Aside from me doing some manual archiving (and some tedious restoring when MoS was devoured a year ago), nothing has been added to the archives since PPP3 in January 06. Unfortunately, this means the Magic Flute (my spidering script) is also the oldest PHP script on the Ermarian Network going by updates.

So I have taken the time to rewrite it, integrating it with the new Drupal site. There's not much more to say, really, except this:

http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/topic/1/4166

The archiving of one single topic works. What remains to be done is the coordination: In order to keep a more or less up-to-date archive that is actually effective against unexpected topic glitches, topics need to be re-archived once they're posted in. Combining it with the RSS feed should do the trick - although that feed itself badly needs an update.

But anyway, PPP4 is about to launch, and if it goes right, it will be the last PPP that has a number - from then on, archives should be continuous.

Edit: And yes, I realize character entities are broken. I'm pretty sure it's a display bug though; so the data itself isn't corrupt.

I am all for it, Ephesos. How many votes do I get?

---

Even though the OOC thread is longer than the IC thread, it is in no danger. The crash is triggered by too much text, and OOC posts are far shorter. (Well, the non-random crash; the random one can happen to any thread at any time).

That said, I suggest we implement a 500-post-rule for ICs. The 501st reply (502nd post) is a closing notice; the moderator who closed the topic starts a new one.

An interesting phenomenon is that we never used to have this problem even in IC threads. The record was 671 posts. It only started to become a problem once our average post began to increase in length so much. A disease of civilization, so to speak.

We get plenty of posts here about other RPGs. And we get plenty of posts where people ask if Jeff will ever make a MMORPG.

But I've never seen... well, you know where this is going. :P

Surely there have been MUDs around that did this for years if not decades?

Given that you get the CD when you order (unless you don't want one), what exactly prevents the music from being put on the CD?

Admittedly, this would force some distinction between the "unlocked, downloaded version" and the "CD version" of the game, which till now appears not to exist. But I think it'd be worth it.

Also, since quite a few people do have broadband, the music extension (or in fact the CD version) could be a separate download via FTP (the same way you get BoE and Nethergate).

I suspect that the author planned something clever about this and forgot to finish it off, but maybe it was deliberately left as it is.
Having read Treasure Island a few times but never noticed this, I'm hungry for more detail. You seem to know what this pun is. Please elaborate.

We have a topic over at Shadow Vale about this (which actually triggered my question here), regarding the set_terrain/floor/stain/field calls and the lack of boundary checking.

From the way stains are described in the appendix - -1 removes all stains (and stains are in fact stored in binary form, so 1=small blood, 2=medium blood, 4=large blood, 8=small slime, 16=large slime, etc.), the rest places a certain stain - it would appear that placing multiple different stains should be possible. Nope. Putting, for example, a slime stain removes all blood stains from the square. Should this happen, or am I doing something wrong here?

Even if I were able to use AIM, that's three hours before I have to go to work.

Coincidentally, why does the General chat, which is really not that dependent on people making it, get sensibly scheduled at the start of the weekend, and this during the week? Around Saturday morning to midday, there is a brief window when most people can arrange to be online no matter where. In the middle of the week... tough.
