Strange. uranusalien fooled us. He edited the title of the thread, so now it's games, not books. Anyway, I never saw any Sherlock Holmes movie, but I read plenty of 'em... I really suggest reading books, murder. You might think it's the same effect, but when reading a book you get a lot more freedom with imagination. It's fun really. (the other benefit I get from reading, for example the LotR books almost two years before the movie came out, is that I get to laugh about people not knowing who Tom Bombadil is, and wondering how much money this Tolkien fella paid to Peter Jackson for the rights to write the book... ) -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. Coleridge --- "It is as if everyone had lost their sense Consigned themselves to downfall and decadence And a wisp it is they have chosen as their beacon." What does a dead end discussion have to do with it? Is this thread one? Are the books one? Or what? -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. Including the ones on Mars, or what? There aren't 7 billion people on Earth... And one more thing. Nobody seems to have noticed the following. "of the turn of the tide" Everyone says it, yet it makes no sense! It should be "at the turn of the tide". Get it? The tide is turning, because he comes back again to beat Sauron up? Get it? Everyone quotes it like that for some reason... ---------- And I have uncovered lost kings identity! He is really Plato, you know. At least he quotes Plato in his sig, and puts "Me" after it... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. We have uncovered your true identity, Karzoth! You are really a man from the future who has traveled here in a time machine. How else do you explain this temporal anomaly? :P The post time doesn't change with edits. It's the time when the post is first added. There is absolutely no way to make two posts the earlier of which is one minute later than the second one. I have to read them one day, pity our school library doesn't have any of them... At the moment I'm busy reading G.R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire". By the way, from the summaries and reviews in bookstores I never figured out if its Sci-Fi or Fantasy. Which is it? Or is it a mix of both? -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! I think Nazgul and I had a chess game going for a while, but it would take 24 hours for one move, because when I was awake to check my PMs and made my move, it'd still be half a day before he made a counter... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! 90% of all cars are stolen within 30 minutes of being parked. That one's not just a joke, it's complete hogwash. Nobody mentioned language being an important part of culture yet? Well I do now... Language Shapes Culture (That's what we just found out after discussing in school today). On that note, methinks someone is trying to get us do their Theory of Knowledge homework... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. Why do you all assume greed is one of the great advantages of humans? The Vahnatai, for example, are idealistic, and most of the Slitherikzai are too (let's just drop Nephilim from the discussion, right?). While the Vahnatai would certainly be capable and ready to seal themselves in a cave and hibernate for a few centuries, effectively losing the war, most of the humans would split up and change sides the moment they saw a better opportunity for money. Hey, if your PCs were in such a war, and the humans' commander offers you 1000 coins for a mission, and the Vahnatai offer you a soul crystal, two training crystals and a good xp boost, you wouldn't think twice, right? Neither would many humans, both Exile and Empire. They'd eventually break into factions, and at that point they're tactically no better off than the nephilim with their tribal societies. Greed doesn't usually do a lot to unite people... EDIT: I actually mean "soul crystal" here. The Vahnatai would never give anybody a crystal soul freely (apart from some renegades who don't care about it; in a way they've become like humans ). This is not referring to a theft, but to humans being offered a bribe. The most logical thing coming to mind is some cool magic thingie only made by Vahnatai. Like a soul crystal. This discussion is fascinating and amusing, if a bit straining to follow, since it seems to me that everyone posting here has responded to a post at least two above the latest post. That may or may not be for the reason that there have been 9 posts in 15 minutes, which is a rather great rate. In any case, SIS (the originator of this topic fyi) has referred to 'lambda people' in the first place, and - after 4 posts and 10 minutes - decided to clear up that 'lambda people' referred to the majority of these boards (meaning a definition of the word 'lambda people', not connected to sexual preference in any way). So what sis apparently referred to in his first post was how the majority of members were supposed to deal with the minority of spammers. While I beg to differ about designating spammers a minority here (imho we're about 80% ), it doesn't have any reference to sexual preferences. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! I concur with WM. Not. Again. Party Animal, fyi, this discussion topic has been raised several times in the past on these boards. I would say that the number of repetitions - including all its variations (ranging from 'would Erika kick Rentar's ass' to 'Which of the Valorim plagues would win an all-out war' to 'Earth vs. Ermarian: In a struggle of technology against magic, which would prevail') - are about 20-40. Count them if you have the time, and if you arrive at a number significantly lower than 20, I'll hang my head in shame. But to answer the old question again, humans. The nephilim live in tribal societies with simple social structure, magic and technology. No chance. The Slitherikzai are almost all underground, and they possess no means of teleporting to the surface, while humans can send reinforcements down. The Vahnatai are the only ones that are a match for the humans, and this is first in a time of war (between the surface and Exile), and the next time on a newly settled, unimportant continent under mostly incompetent and corrupt mayors. If the humans of Exile and the surface unite, they could defeat the Vahnatai. There. That enough? -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. Coleridge --- "It is as if everyone had lost their sense Consigned themselves to downfall and decadence And a wisp it is they have chosen as their beacon." Alo, in recompense for not scrolling past his avatar, now you have to scroll past his sig. Yeah, the last part definitely needs to be changed. ørang had it right down to the û's. It might be another quote, but 'nag' is not a word, and 'gimbatu' not a correct verb form. Yes, I know some things... You don't read Camus like a fantasy story, you know. I thought it was pretty boring too, when we first read it in school, but finding out the philosophical backgrounds from his biography (and that of Sartre too) was quite intriguing, even if it was for an essay. I like fantasy far better than any of that stuff, but you have to read them in different ways to appreciate them - you don't take the story literally, but look for symbolisms and analogies. The only three writers I have really hated after reading their works in school were Willa Cather ("My Antonia"), Anne Tyler ("A Slipping-Down Life"), and Hemingway (basically everything). It's all so dusty and dry that Camus seems like a cartoon story by comparison... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. Now that's a good way of making money off all those convert-crazy fundamentalist maniacs. I wonder, did any of you read "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" by Douglas Adams? There's something called an 'electric monk' in there, which has no other purpose than to believe in stuff for you... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! Btw, Zephyr, that name is unoriginal to the point of being tasteless. Didn't you see how Izzanor was already mistaken for you once? Anyway, no matter. Funny Izzanor, most of those are my favorite books as well. I only like Dragonsdawn from the Pern series though. They're too disconnected to really be one storyline (400-800 years between each I think). But the first one is cool... And Eoin (sp?) Colfer is a really cool, brand-new author. Hope he writes more Fowl stuff. Oh, btw, have you read the Lord of the Rings already, or will you read the Hobbit first? I have a theory that in 2030 the world will end. Or sometime shortly before that. Nothing to do with good ol' Nosty of course, but the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It speaks of the Vogons destroying the Earth "nearly 2000 years after some guy had been nailed to a tree" (Jesus reference). Since most sources speak of Jesus dying in the Year 30, 2030 or somewhat earlier would be the time of the apocalypes.
