It's not really html, I'd say, or it wouldn't work, right? :P

Easiest way for me — if I don't know the code — is to go to Insert Symbol in Word. Problem is it usually gets changed to a ? when pasted here...

Indeed, cool. That was a rethorical question anyway, but — never (about the good grand vizier)!

How would Prazac be released from that spell?

Edit: Stupid, by Garzahd's death of course... You do end up killing him in A2, right?

Got another idea, some kind of binding amulet that Prazac wears. I think that one's been used before, but it's still cool. Especially because the idea of a young imperial princess enslaved by a crazy, vicious court wizard is a stereotype that cannot and should not be avoided. :P

So, the sum of all the suggestions is this:

Hawthorne is assassinated with Prazac in her teens. Garzahd takes the place of Grand Vizier (I don't think he would have been Grand Vizier when Hawthorne lived because he already was Court Wizard, but who knows). Claiming that Prazac is too young to rule, he assumes the responsibility of her 'legal guardian' or something and basically does all the governing.

To ensure that she doesn't contest this (after all she is quite bright and would realize that Garzahd is basically usurping her throne), he gets her to wear some kind of enchanted amulet that binds her to his will. Note this would allow him to continue his reign for many decades since Prazac would 'confirm' each and every of his decisions even when she's officially on the throne. Picture Grima and Theoden from LotR. ;)

Eventually, the player kills Garzahd, effectively ending the spell and rendering the amulet useless. Prazac ascends the throne, and it continues with the canon history from there.

Any corrections, suggestions, improvements, complaints, etc? Note I don't know A2 and there might be stuff in there that'd contradict this theory. Point any such out. :)

Actually, Trogdor, German grammar never places the verb at the end - I should know :P .

There are other differences though, for example the above sentence would run: Actually places the German grammar the verb never at the and. ;)

Scripts can be shared by different monsters though, I hope, can they?

Will every individual monster you place have its script or will each monster type have a generic one?

Too bad, we're back on topic. Otherwise I'd have said that there was actually structure in the jumble, the verb was always at the end, which is afaik typical for Yoda-speak.

Now let's get back on topic (once again).

If monsters will cast certain spells according to script, can you make them heal themselves if and only if they get below a certain health level, do you think?

I don't think even a juvenile Prazac would have led the Exile/Empire War, which was mostly a mindless vengeance mission, something Prazac proved she was wise enough to avoid in Avernum 3.

If Prazac was considered Empress, was Garzahd her legal guardian or something, ruling as a steward? And did no one know that he was deep into demonology and had basically gone crazy?

Read the topic.

Rosy mentioned replacing the PCs' graphics with custom graphics in the bitmap sheets (alternatively with ResEdit or whatever you Mac users have). That evolved into a discussion about naked PCs and Alo suggested stripping an @ in an ASCII based game (if you don't know what that is, you missed something).

That got us started on a discussion of the sex appeal of the ASCII letters. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Names (2)_files/tongue.gif)

EDIT: Always nice to go off to do something else while writing a post, then posting to find someone has beaten you by over 20 minutes... IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Names (2)_files/biggrin.gif)

She actually says that she got sent down by the predecessor of the current Hawthorne, goes on to say that the current Hawthorne is even worse, and gives you the quest to assassinate him somehow.

I know what you mean, I thought it would logically have to be the same one, but I played through Avernum again just recently in order to find out about this. It's actually in there.

Why not? Any time I get to a computer, I spend about 10 minutes typing out DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD in so many different colors and styles and staring at them lustily for a solid half hour.

Don't believe me? Better not... IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Names (2)_files/tongue.gif)

To be honest, answering an earlier question: I only ever played the demo of that one, which leaves you stuck in the Vahnatai caverns because the teleporter back up doesn't work (the ToM is out of bounds in the demo).

You can fool around with the editor and move to the starting town, and then explore a bit now the barriers are down, but you don't learn much.

Was Garzahd a demonologist, and is this why everyone keeps describing him as a madman? I'm not going to buy a game just to find this out, you know... :P

Quite wise for that age, then. :P

What kind of government did Garzahd make? Was he just like the other monarchs? And was he an usurper, or did the nobles and others acknowledge his temporary rulership in place of Prazac?

Also, I heard Garzahd was a bit cracked; did he rule by whim or something?

Well, the only board I've ever been on was a paid-for one, and it's the best I've ever seen on the web. I guess the free ones are not as good, but they can't be that bad...

"in pejorative terms"

LOL, it makes remembering names rather easy if you just remember everyone by the swearword you give him...

And I must agree, if you'll just read carefully you'll eventually find out what TGM, VWM, TM, *i, *GC, and all that stuff means. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Who is who_files/wink.gif)

Like the walkway tiles? But ships are going to be too infrequent for Jeff to be programming some automatically changing tiles like for the walkways, and making custom graphics for every single of these terrains would take a lot of terrain slots - are those going to be increased in BoA btw, or do we still struggle around with 255 terrains, 165 of them editable?

Drakey, I looked over my site again, which is, after all, made up of info that you guys gave me. ;) I found that Hawthorne had a reign from 791 to 822. Presumably, 822 would be the year of his assassination.

About the Empire War, I don't see anything precise in there, but 822 would have been the earliest possible time for it to start, and at 826 (Prazac's ascension to the throne), I guess it would already have ended long before. So I'd say 822/3 to 824/5. It seems long in Avernum 2, but it really is just a few years.

The Plagues: At about 833, the player starts the expedition to the surface in Avernum 3. The plagues would have been firmly in place before then. However, since most people (apart from 'Worm War' veterans who'll attack the party on sight) don't believe Avernites to be responsible, the time that has passed between the Empire War and the Plagues must be large enough for there to be no direct connection. Drakey, are you sure the Plagues came *before* Prazac became empress?

And I'm really naughty; I have a name too short to be made into an Acronym because 'A' would be a bit strange (I might choose some surname eventually, maybe 'Ilyaran', but AI is also not quite what I have in mind, Thuryl might object since he is the local AI here IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Who is who_files/tongue.gif) ). But it's still long and strange enough to be easily misspelled. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Who is who_files/biggrin.gif) And you can't do anything about it IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Who is who_files/tongue.gif) .

Though you can call me Aran or Ara, but I prefer Aran for some reason because it sounds less like 'Arachnid'. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Who is who_files/wink.gif)

LOL!

I thought so too after some time thinking about how to prevent players from taking it. Like, "Who'd actually be so daft as to *want* to take it?" :D

It's supposed to be a special item btw (the sheathed sword), which can be used once in a certain place (ie. the scene of the battle), and then gives the item, which is again taken away after the battle, immediately after moving the PC away from the battle scene, so there's no naughty dropping it and picking it up afterwards. :P The thing I'm concerned with is not making cheating impossible, but making it just so hard that players are aware what they're doing is purposely spoiling their fun, and that there are no loopholes which can unintentionally be exploited. ;)
