That about the PCs sounds nice, it's similar to the creations in Geneforge a bit, right? It's a bit meager, but we have to make do with what we get, eh? :P

Beta-testing - well, since I don't have a mac anyways (and I'm not about to buy one either! :P ) it doesn't matter that I'm unexperienced and can't get the job. So there. ;)

I fail to see what power-gaming has to do with doing a bit of math to figure out what course of action is to your advantage - it'd be the equivalent of the character trying to decide what to do, only in numerical terms since all the stuff like HP etc is quantified into numbers.

But I agree with you on dice not being necessary for the game; they should be an aid and not a binding factor. For example, in those online RP boards, they don't need any dice or maths in order to write good stories. Dice are not necessary when they're replaced by creativity, and by the readiness to accept that sometimes things will go wrong - demigod players in forum rps are people who have to be reminded of their mortality by dice. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) - Influences Players Opinions_files/tongue.gif)

And complex dice systems are absolutely annoying when they're on paper-and-pen RPs rather than computer games, because in a computer game you have a calculator available, and since you will usually be in single-player mode, endlessly calculating dice and comparing weapons does not earn you impatient glares from fellow players... Well, from one point of view, all of it is made up. :P

Some of the emperors are in the games by Spiderweb though - Prazac, Hawthorne I-III, and Stewart, some more maybe. (I think Sol is also in the spidweb games, but I'm not sure).

The rest is made up by the veterans here. It goes like this: I and some others ask questions, the veterans answer them, when we've got enough info we make a list. There's a version of the list online here: Encyclopedia / Emperor Reigns It's as simple as that. ;)

At least in real life the dice are limited to 4,6,10,20 sides and a few other euclidian shapes - no such luck with computer games... IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) - Influences Players Opinions_files/tongue.gif)

And a bit of statistics can be rather helpful for the player. Picture this (this is an actual example from a series known as "The Dark Eye" in Germany, I think it's "Arcania" or something in English):

You're in a cavern with a *huge* treasure, but its guardian, an undefeatable demigod, doesn't allow you to take anything. He does offer you to play a little game though. The game runs as follows: You get a large heap (100) of valuable coins set before you. You have to pull at least 33 out of the heap. In the heap there are 3 which are enchanted to trigger a deadly doortrap beneath you when drawn.

Do you take the offer?

(Answer: No you wouldn't, because you have about a 28% chance to survive. I actually wrote a program on my calculator to figure that out. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) - Influences Players Opinions_files/tongue.gif) )

About dice algebra - calculating the average of 23d5+40 looks imposing, but you can do it in your head: ((5+1)/2 * 23 ) + 40 = 109. I use that alot when I play ADOM, where the damage values are also given in XdY+Z form.

Useful for making BoE scenarios too, because it uses the notation too. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) - Influences Players Opinions_files/tongue.gif)

How is history repeating itself in these two cases? Solberg ripped off a scenario by Alcritas and entered it in Alcritas's contest; OM made three different accounts with the same password and email address. The only common thing I see is idiocy... Just to avoid this post being spam, I'll make a point:

Calculating the probability using all letter combinations is senseless. You get passwords like rekfdnbzodv. Nobody on the planet has this password, has ever had it or probably will ever have it (unless you change yours to it now, duh IMAGE(Message to Somebody-Order Mage-Iceman (3)_files/tongue.gif) ). Passwords are usually real words, or names. For example, most of my passwords are characters from LotR.

However, that doesn't make a real difference. People will almost never have the same IP, let alone the same password. Btw, if I made multi accounts anywhere where it's not allowed - such as online games and stuff, provided they don't check the IP - I'd choose different login names, different passwords and different email addresses - preferrably at different providers and with no apparent similarity. What OM has or has not done is just plain stupid.

Zephyr, sticking to friends is fine - however, I suspect you're absolutely overdramatizing this. Your posts read like a bad-written TV soap. IMAGE(Message to Somebody-Order Mage-Iceman (3)_files/tongue.gif)

Okay, as I take it, the history written by Lord Arkanor is part of the arena, and it's not well-liked.

Is there anything at all that should be taken into official history from the arena, not being part of scenarios? Custer raised a point here about 'non-canon' stuff messing the thing up. I'm not sure about Drakey's site, since Jeff more or less approved that one, but should the arena history also be included?

Windows users only get the terrain bitmap files in Avernum 3. I don't know about Macs, but there are no bmp files in Averum1/2 for Windows.

I think it was just the terrains, and the others are there all right, but I'm not sure.

If you use Windows, just get Avernum 3 (you only need the demo), install it, and open the Data folder. The bmp files are numbered, not named, but the terrains start - I think - at 7000. 700, coming right before then, sorting by names, is the cool intro picture.

No, you're not gloating but I am. :P

I was asking sarcastically if it was allowed to gloat for any of us.

You requested a custom title (indirectly), and so did several others (even more covertly). Your request was fulfilled. The others weren't. :P

Let's just hope that Drakey will not announce his return by taking away all our shiny new titles... .

Zharrad, how did you know I was thankful? Not that I'm not, but anyway. :P Well, I guess my ecstatic post in the BoE links thread could be counted as thanks...

And since all requests after Zharrad's seem to have gone unfulfilled, is it allowed to gloat? Especially since I didn't even ask for mine? :D

EDIT: Except for ADoS's, but that one doesn't really count...

If you all could agree on the first Doston's size :P , could you make a map for it?

Taking damage when crashlanding on mountains? That would be *really* cool. I hated those instadeaths just because I miscalculated the number of mountain squares in Exile.

And it would make it possible actually flying over mountains! That's what I hated in BoA. Someone might even come up with a way to make the party actually appear hovering over the ground, though I doubt it. ;)

Custer, you left out Wal-Mart, which does the first of the things you named (buying products manufactured in third world countries at bad labor conditions), treats its employees just as badly as these laborers (firing workers with health problems and providing poor worker insurance), and which basically has an almost destructive expansion policy, moving into an area, undercutting the prices to ruin the local economy and then selling at ridiculous prices when the competition is destroyed.

And I wouldn't trust M$ with anything more than my text documents, if I had the choice (I'm currently using an old PC with NT, which is more trustworthy than XP at the expense of total incompatibility with most games... IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Evil Companies (2)_files/rolleyes.gif) )
