Microsoft: Just recently, another security hole was discovered in IE and Windows which makes it very easy for hackers to break into computers, and program individual PCs all over the internet, to - for example - all simultaneously starting a denial of service attack without their users' knowledge. At the moment they're even worrying that Alquaeda (sorry, can't spell it ![]() Also, did you know that IE sends the URL of every page you visit to a server at M$ HQ? Many URLs at LogIn pages contain the username and password string, so if someone hacks into the server storing those URLs they can access - for example - mail accounts. This makes IE spyware, programmed to send this information by MS in order to find out about customer habits without informing the users about it. A zephyr is a - somewhat poetical - synonym for a small breeze. "Zephyrus" (stressed on either the 1st or the 2nd syllable, I don't know) was, afaik, the name of some minor deity or something in Greek mythology. EDIT: Obviously the time I spent looking in the dictionary was too long... :P [ Tuesday, August 05, 2003 22:09: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! By the way, concerning the arena in relation to this topic: The arena is now seemingly several millenia in the future from the Avernum trilogy (6000 Years I think), and has developed a load of history that has never been developed in any scenarios, while the last scenario seems to be somewhere at 3000 IE. I'd say we break off the BoE/BoA related Ermarian history there, since what happens afterwards has nothing to do with the scenarios. And, to paraphrase some of the people posting here: "It restricts the freedom of the designer too much if a load of history is included". :P While I disagree as long as the history in question is already developed in scenarios (that should be a criterion IMHO), it definitely applies to the 6000 years of Arena History. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. I like the new graphics, especially the spell effects. I do hope Jeff will allow us to integrate those... :D Apart from that: an updated "How to create..." section? You put that one up there weeks ago, and I see no difference... :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Karzoth, it may be good soon, but I doubt it'll be much better than it is now until BoA is out - the best improvement for any site is always the update where the content is added. :P Btw, those menu buttons that light up when your mouse goes over them - how did you do that one, might be a cool improvement to my own site. :D [ Monday, August 04, 2003 12:25: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Nice site (although I hope you come up with a more attractive design :P ), but I notice three - well four - things. Don't worry, they're all just typos. ^_^ Graphics: "Some are some arn't", should probably say "Some are good, some aren't". Links: It's The Louvre, not the Lourve. The link to my site is spelt wrong (/arancayAtar/), the fourth a is one too much :P , so the link doesn't work, and also - just a minor thing, but anyway - you compensated by leaving out the a after Ermarian (Ermariana). :D [ Monday, August 04, 2003 07:05: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Well, it's certainly amusing to see one steadfast guy defend his musical tastes against the whole board without faltering. But it doesn't matter how many times you call anyone an idiot, I still prefer classical music to any of the currently popular crap. If you'll listen closely in Exile 1 (at least if you have a mac, I'm told, it doesn't work for me), you'll hear that the theme of Exile is also a classical one, by Bach. :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. And when did the Vahnatai occupy the surface? I guess I know who we'd have to ask here: Drakey. :P Anyone know if he's still gone, or if yes, how long till he'll be back? Orangutan (if I may call you that :D ), yes, the thread has gone off-topic after a while; you can skip over all of that map/site design/graphics discussion, it's irrelevant to this history. If you want to have the whole map of Ermarian (the only one currently existing is a little inaccurate, I've been told) you can get one here. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. MS might not abuse its employees the way I heard Wal-Mart does, but it's the company that owns the OS used by about 90% of all personal computers - not that that is a reason to call it evil, but it gives the company power. And when it then turns out that there are as many security holes in Windows as there are holes in a fishnet (they're finding them all the time, so why shouldn't there be even more?), then you can't know who else is reading everything you type, including all the passwords. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! All four of 'em. Hard to decide - I heard loads of evil stuff about Wal-Mart, and I know the privacy policies of AOL and Microsoft well enough not to use Internet Explorer (which, btw, sends every URL you request to M$ Headquarters, as I just heard), or ICQ (the new version of which is a forced update - you can't run the old one anymore - and has a huge ad square at the top), or AIM. I haven't heard anything bad about IBM though... Edit: Wait, I just noticed, special post number once again. I had rather considered some kind of searchable BoE archive, like the Louvre but for BoE. I hate to scroll through hundreds of pictures to find one I want. That about needing Java Script is a short message saying Java Script must be activated in your browser to see the site. But that also means that the database was programmed in Javascript. ALas, I have no idea about programming either in Java or in Javascript. So scratch that idea. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. 1. TM said that interbreeding took place, so his definition could hardly have been that of a tiny fairy creature. So when he says that they interbreeded, by definition he must have meant elves that were large enough. 2. Well, that's a matter of taste, for my part I've always been fascinated by elves, both in Tolkien's (and later writers') books, and in RPGs - my BoE scenario will also contain them, albeit in another world. It's just that I feel elves and Ermarian should be separated, and I somehow don't like the idea of primitive, prehistoric elves living as cavemen. It seems undignified. Edit:  Okay. This is getting ridiculous. I make a post about the two histories between which to choose from (I'm not saying someone can't post their own suggestion here btw), and over 24 hours there's only one vague comment about elves not fitting into the world (which I agree with btw). I'd make a poll, but there don't seem to be that many choices yet and I think we should have more of an discussion before there's a poll. I'm editing this post because I don't want to purposely double-post again in the same thread, so I just have to hope someone reads this thread again in spite of there being no new post. C'mon, y'all. Suggest something. :P [ Saturday, August 02, 2003 10:04: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. So far, the only pages that show up for me are the Main page and the About page; I'm not sure if that's due to the others not being finished yet, or my browser being stupid again. I might make a graphics archive too, once I find the time. 1. Concerning "no elves". I totally agree with that, it's not me you're trying to convince here. :P 2. Concerning size, I don't know what you imagine when you think of elves, but I get this picture of Tolkien's Eldar in my head, slender build, longer life-spans, usually taller (!) than humans. It would seem that TM has imagined the elves on Aizo to be rather like primitive caveman, biologically like Eldar, but not as civilized. So no one is saying anything about these elves being tiny. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. I'm awfully sorry for the double post, but we got a little sidetracked here, and this thread has been kinda inactive lately. So to wrap up: The thing currently in development is the timeline of emperors of the Aizonian Empire, and what is currently going on - seemingly - is that TM and Stareye have two different versions of the founding of said Empire. It'd probably be best if we could try to reconcile these versions, because the history articles can only be written once the facts are all known. The current versions of the Aizonian Empire being born, to summarize: quote: quote: -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair.
