I visited the Spiderweb site in my free time on the school network at one time, and the guy next to me remarked that I seemed to have a 'good taste for software'. He's the only one I know at my school who knows the SW games, but afaik he isn't here on the boards. Dunno... Ryan?

What kind of RP partners would you like most? in General

There are, imho, three fundamental types of Roleplayers. These are the Numerical, the Performative, and the Narrative (funny names, I admit, but they fit.)

The numerical RP-ers concentrate on realism and on trying to control the actions of characters through rules. Characteristic is their use of numbers. What I'm getting at is sort of like this (exaggerated into parody of course).

quote:
Tom the adventurer tries to get up, rolls a 7, and succeeds as this is lower than his combined stamina and strength values. He feels a splitting headache, however, and will deduct 1 from Strength, 2 from Dexterity, 1 from Stamina and 4 from Intelligence for the rest of the day until he manages to cure it.

He walks toward his group, who have meanwhile slain the ogre that hit Tom on the head with his club (+2 ?3) [2d8+5], knocking him out (on a roll of 2-4 on d6) rather than instantaneously killing him (1 on d6). Since Tom was not conscious when the ogre was slain, he does not get full experience benefit, but he receives 25% for being conscious for 50% of the rounds, plus 30% for causing 45% of the wounds that slew the ogre. Out of 235 exp points ? as the ogre was aged 28 years and had a strength bonus as well as good armor ? that equals 129 points. Tom advances to Level 13 (receiving the standard curse of ?5 to Luck that will abate upon reaching Level 14), and improves his Stamina by +2. His Sword Skill automatically increases by +3, and he decides to allot the rest of his points into an additional +2 for the Sword skill, lifting it to 26.

The Performative concentrate on *being* their character. They see it all from a first person perspective, and visually. Their RP posts are most like drama scripts. They also are liable to use either 1st person or present tense (or both). Picture Zephyr.

quote:
Tom: *Tom gets up* Ow, my head. *rubs his head, which is hurting badly*

*walks toward his group.*

Other adventurer: *wipes sword clean* We've killed the thing. *points at dead ogre lying on ground.*

Tom: *still holding his head* Good. That beast gave me quite a headache. Well, at least I learned a few things about fighting with a sword. *makes a few practice moves.*

The Narrative, finally, are RP-ers who attempt to write a story about their character. They use 3rd person, past tense, and - most importantly - thoughts and inner monologue. Their character can show development and self-doubt.

quote:
Ouch.

Tom woke, and wished he hadn't. He attempted to get past the clouds of red pain in his brain and into his memories of the last few minutes, and succeeded after a few moments of struggling. There'd been an ogre, and from the enourmous flaming sphere of lava that seemed to be firmly attached to his shoulders in place of a head, he assumed it must have flattened his skull with its enormous club.

After a few moments of colorful lights swirling before his eyes, the mists cleared partly, and he could make out a fellow adventurer looking down at him in concern.

"I'm... all right...", he managed to mumble indistinctly. The words hurt in his ears and jaw as they left his mouth.

"You bet," was the other one's sarcastic remark.

[...]

I think it should be obvious by now which I prefer. IMAGE(What kind of RP partners would you like most_files/biggrin.gif)

Oh yes, and whoever I rp with should have at least some natural apprehension against controlling other players' characters. IMAGE(What kind of RP partners would you like most_files/wink.gif) Aside from that, I think the overpowered PCs aren't an issue, really, because the Narrative players I described earlier don't overpower their characters generally.

I think there's no life on Mars, but perhaps there might be some fossilized stuff.

And it'll probably be more than 100 years until an attempt to establish a colony or something was made, though someone might land on the planet before then.

Oh, and welcome back ASD! Where have you been? (no, I joined long after you left, but I've been told about several of the more famous oldbies... IMAGE(life on mars (2)_files/biggrin.gif) )

OOC:

Big apologies for the confusion I seemingly caused through my mistake. I mixed up the kingdoms midway (it isn't easy being a spy... IMAGE(Shattered Alliance - Remake_files/tongue.gif) ), and thought that I was in a bar in Kliste.

It's in Arcadina of course (the bar Rin went into at least). I made a mistake when I spoke of several people being dressed like Klistenians, of course they're Arcadinans.

Oh, and Alec: Yes, it is of course quite an opportunity to flood the thread with Kafka as a response to Zephyr's insect, but can't we stay a bit more reasonable?

Oh yes, and I'm considering withdrawing from this; sorry. IMAGE(Shattered Alliance - Remake_files/frown.gif)

OOC: I can see into the future, apparently. I say 'this roleplay is doomed to failure', and just as I finish speaking, Zephyr turns up. Sorry, but that had to be said. Zephyr, please for the love of the sacred RP, stop using the —— * stars in your ICs.

Just to show an example.

Rin: *enters a bar, looks around.* Hey there! *slays everyone*.

Get the point? Try for a narrative, past tense, form instead. And I somehow don't think Firedrake will be happy with your insect.

MSW, the setting of this world would appear to be not out of the ordinary, and certainly not very Tolkien-esque. We have magic, we have non-humans, and some evidence of early Renaissance technology, plus probably printing. Not terribly different from Ermarian (the Avernum world).

IC:

Rin looked up. A lot more people had entered the bar by now; it was approaching sunset and there was little else to do. Several of the people caught his eye.

At the sight of one of them, he paused. The old man looked at him strangely, with piercingly blue eyes. The face reminded him of someone...

I'll be damned. Rin had not been alive at the time, but he had read history books. Couldn't be, probably, but still — the age fitted the facts. Rin had a keen eye for people, and he had intensely researched the history and culture of both kingdoms. It was essential in his position.

But how did such a man come here? He was dressed as a civilian, sure enough. A Klisten garb. The man must have been on the run for several decades before time covered up the incident.

Another man entered, younger than him probably, but looking older than he did. He was one of the Klisten soldiers, as far as Rin could see, but looked like a sellsword. He stuck out in a crowd like this, were most people were dressed as civilians. He also looked around carefully before sitting down, much as the old man had.

Looks like it'll start any moment. Scene 1: The Encounter in the Tavern. Rin thought wrily. He had long ago grown used to detecting when an adventure was about to start, and to thinking of it in separate scenes. Any moment now.

This roleplay looks doomed to failure, but let's see how it turns out...

For the record, try to put something more worthwhile in your char desc than height/age/gender/eye color/hair color. Any fool can generate such stuff at random, really *creating* a character takes more work.

All right, I guess I'll do a young char this time.

Rinaric Merral, or Rin for short, was a man of short stature. His form was lithe, and he had a pale complexion that was accentuated by raven-black hair and extremely dark grey eyes. Someone seeing him for the first time might have placed his age at twenty, more or less; truly, the thirty eight years Rin had lived through had been kind to him.

His profession... well, that was hard to say really. He was a gatherer of information, to put it subtly. That should say it all. If he could be said to be in anybody's 'service', it was that of the Kingdom of Kliste. For the moment.

And, to put it a bit bluntly, right at this moment he regretted it sorely. War was never good times for a spy. And those who would point out that spies were only employed in war were fools - Rin had been spying on the politics of Arcadina for years now, and he knew that colleagues were listening as attentively to what happened in the capital of Kliste. It was a good arrangement, really. As long as there was peace. While there was peace, nobody would be too suspicious of his actions, and if he was found nobody would deal with him harshly. Now that the two countries were at war, Rin was liable to lose his head when discovered.

He shook his head at the folly of this war, because he had determined quite some time ago that Arcadina, or at least those people who would be responsible for the assassination, were either extremely secretive even in their innermost privacy, or completely blameless. There was haphazard evidence of course, but Rin was suspicious. There was something rotten going on here, and he was determined to find out what.

The problem was that, for the moment, he was rather stuck. The capital was sealed in both directions, and Rin had no hope of getting a message back to his employers. And that was why he was right now sitting in the corner of a pub and cursing his fate silently.

...

My advice is this: You'll eventually get used to it. I've been here for less than a year (I joined last May), and I already feel that I 'fit in', or at least fit in better than I did at the start.

And note one thing:

These boards may seem massive with ~4000 members, but we're only a few hundred who post here. In that size of community, *you* actually have an impact on what is happening, strange though it may seem. So rather than leave in disappointment, how about staying around and try changing it? What I meant was that it's hard to make a good story for an RP in a setting taken from one of the games. The Avernum RP is clearly a precedent for what might be done with Geneforge, so I just wanted to point out how hard it actually is.

A good plot is just tricky to develop - and if you don't have a good plot, you can forget the rest of the RP. I mean, do we want another Zombie Attack?

Oh, and I'll be gone from the Interim Polaris some time, if my internet problems don't cease. This forum is currently the only (and I mean the only) site I can access (apart from one online game site). :(

Edit: As if through a bitter irony, the third site I can access is the old webeacon.com/boards page. Complete with database error. Ah well.

This might be slightly off-topic, but keeping with the recent cataclysms: Is anyone else experiencing problems with Yahoo/Geocities right now?

Edit: This is weird. Half of the sites I go to display a proxy error now. The others don't. web.de, yahoo.com, geocities.com, ezboard.com and the temporary Polaris board don't work. This board does. Chance forums are fine as well.

In fact, the only two things that work now are the Spidweb boards and the Chance boards. Everything else gets an 'address not found'. It's obviously to do with my machine, since it's unlikely that all these sites go down simultaneously. But why do the others work?

Troglodytes, the other dark meat in General

Commander Nepald Londar was not going to allow these troglodytes to take control of the Empire, however. A tactical genius, he began a long series of staged battles that weakened the troglodytes' tenuous hold on the land. But they were not going to go down without a fight. They struck fast and hard and with magic, and Londar had no answer for the spells. But one night in 384 IE, Londar's men constructed catapults and readied for a complete assault against the Solaran mines. Crashing down came the barricades and defenses that the troglodytes had erected, and infantry secured the inner passageways of the mines. Sealing off the troglodytes from their original base of operations took away their reinforcements and supplies, and they fell quickly. Two years later, the soldiers bloody from their defense of the mines, burst through into troglodyte territory and razed several villages to the ground. With more troops pouring through every day, Londar oversaw the systematic hunting down and eradication of the last of Pralgrad's intelligent non-human species.
The Encyclopaedia Ermariana: Of the Eradication of Non-Humans in Pralgrad

Interpret that how you want, I'd say it means they didn't leave any alive. Those were only the ones on Pralgrad, but it hints at the Empire doing the same in Valorim before they settled there. ;)
