OOC: I hate it when roleplays go so quickly. I get the compulsion to post as rapidly as you can, and stop reading through the posts. Okay, taken my time to read now, and ready to post. EDIT: This happens directly after Oskoth addressing him, and while Chadussid is noticing the traps. IC: Eferas looked up from the road he had been staring it; Oskoth had addressed him. "My name is Eferas. I was hired as a fire mage, and thus part of my job will be to analyze the nature and origin of any magic or similar we may find here." Eferas liked to sound profound. "And I think that starts with the things just over there." he pointed at the shards of glass on the road in front of him. "Indeed, it seems to be mostly alchemy - ready-made explosive potions buried here -, and there are some other alchemical traps here. That is why the wise, all-knowing specialist...", he sneered slightly at Chadussid, but was careful to speak so softly he would not be overheard, "...is so quick to dismiss magic as a part of the source." He paused for a moment, creasing his forehead in concentration, trying to pick up a residue of fire magic. For a moment, his face lit up, then darkened again. Grudgingly, he spoke. "He's right, in part. Very little magic except for a tiny residue of fire energy from the potions. But there was something else. Just for a moment I could feel it, then it was gone. As if someone was pressing a blindfold upon my eye. I wonder..." he was suddenly suspicious. Looking around behind them, he saw a figure at some distance, looking intently at them. It was Garath. "Curse that man," he swore as the by now familiar feeling of numbness crept over him, temporarily robbing him of his magic. Here it is. OOC: I'm using dear old Eferas again. After he left the remote shore of Santharia to topple the Mage-King Baltazar on the Isle of Siris at the age of 78, he left his home many more times to seek adventure. For a few years now, he has lived on the continent of Jenarva (don't ask how he got there). Eferas Cirthain, a human, is now 91 years old, but somewhere along his travels, he has been rejuvenated to a physical age of 71 (preserving chronological consistency, while not making him a fossil. There is no other effect, except that he can still walk unaided, even though thirteen years have passed since the last roleplay). Apart from that, his appearance is still the same as in Baltazar the Mad - the description is posted here again. Even seen from a distance, Eferas' age is immediately visible. His head stoops over so much that his back bends, and he walks with a slow gait that clearly betrays the burden that the years have put upon him. He is rather lean and tall, though not huge, and making an accurate guess one would place him at 180 centimeters ? that is only when he is stooped, though, drawing himself up to his full height he might well reach 190. Approaching him more closely to examine him, the hair that is seen under the hood of the heavy, dark red robe he almost always wears shows to be grey. Yet, several strains that have not lost their color indicate that at an earlier age Eferas had red hair, shining like copper. The staff he is holding in his hands is unadorned and unpolished wood, oak apparently, but there is a small ruby set in the top of it. The staff shows extreme signs of wear, it has seemingly been used as a melee weapon at several times: Eferas is not visibly carrying any other weapons, so this staff is probably his preferred way of dealing with attackers when his magic fails him for some reason. The hem of the red robe is tattered and frayed; this man must have been traveling for quite some time, or he just does not take any care of his appearance. As you approach still closer, the robed mage suddenly turns and looks at you. His gaze is so piercing that you feel almost nailed to the spot by the stare from his coal-black eyes. His face is creased with lines of wear and age, but it is not wrinkly. A narrow but large nose protudes from between his eyes and leaves little space above his thin-lipped, narrow mouth ? he does not possess a moustache, or even a beard. It would probably make him look too silly with his red hair. His gaze continues to stare you into the ground, and now that you are only a few meters away, you almost imagine burning embers to sit in his black eyes, waiting to jump into brilliant flame within a moment. He's a mage, of course, and he specializes on fire spells. He can cast a variety of combat spells based on fire - Fire Bolt, Fire Storm, Flaming Arrows, Fireblast, you know the lot from Avernum. Eferas can, in addition, cast Boiling Blood, a sort of combined blessing and hasting spell, that energizes the object of the spell for some time. He can cast this on himself only, and it takes about fifteen minutes to wear off. Since his adventure with Baltazar thirteen years ago, he has learned a few new things, most notably a very minor talent for controlling and banishing demons (which is, after all, a part of the domain of Fire), and he is able to strengthen and form flames within limits. His main weakness is his frailty. Even at his rejuvenated age of 71, he cannot pull half his weight in melee, and has to rely on the protection of his fellow fighters while casting spells. He still feels uncomfortable around iron (fearing that it will leech away his magical energy), therefore he possesses no blade, except for a large dagger made of obsidian without any sort of magical enhancement; it's just a carved stone blade. Eferas is rather rash and volatile, fitting the nature of his preferred element. He is liable to unexpected mood swings, but his anger is just as quickly calmed again. He is also liable to brag, and has a slightly instable ego, though his long years have lessened this. His personal history again: Eferas was born somewhere in a distant land called Santharia. His father was a mage, his mother a blademaster, and both were former adventurers. Eferas showed magic capability at nine, and his father decided to send him to the Magical Academy at Ximax. His father was assassinated by a necromancer, but Eferas journeyed to Ximax nonetheless at 16. He stayed there for the next half of a century. He was offered a position as archmage at the academy, but late in his life (at 66) he grew bored and decided to set out to become an adventurer like his parents. He has travelled around a lot, but in his civilized homeland there is not much for adventurers to do, so he listened around where there might still be work for a mercenary mage. His first adventure was on the Isle of Siris, where he helped a resistance group in toppling a tyrannical Mage-King, called Baltazar the Mad. After succeeding, he travelled home again (incidentally winning great fortune by selling a fragment of Baltazars enchanted robe, which he had taken with him). He set out many more times, and during one of his adventures, a powerful wizard rejuvenated him by twenty years in reward for a favour. After dwelling on Jenarva for a few years, Eferas heard that the king was searching for mercenaries. What other choice was there but to volunteer? ____________________________________________ IC: Eferas hated long travels. This was due, in part, to his frailty, which made every journey a burden to him, even on horseback like now. For another, it was dull. In his life, he had seen most of the sights that roads offer a wanderer, and there was little new along the way. Mountains, canyons, sea journeys, legendary great cities, royal courts - it all became tiring after half a century of traveling. And yet, as they reached the end of the mountain pass and the whole valley lay beneath and before the adventurers, he found the sight breathtaking. If you asked Eferas, entering a valley was one of the high points of a journey. You got a clear, open view of what lay in front of you, and you knew that from here on, the road would only be downhill. The valley was wooded almost completely, and in the distance, he could see a few rivers shining blue in the hot afternoon sun. The climate was warm and humid, almost tropical, even here on the slopes of the mountains. A light breeze carried the air from the forests below toward them. Far away to the Southeast, shrouded by the mists rising up from the sun-heated forests, Eferas could see a few large mountains, lazily trailing smoke. That's where we're bound. This could get interesting, he mused. Because of his affinity for fire, Eferas found volcanoes fascinating. For now, however, they had to find their way through miles of forest, and with more than a little danger: Whatever had killed the settlers could be lurking anywhere in the valley - Eferas was a bit nervous as he contemplated what they might meet. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. I'll upload the map to my geocities account in six hours, roundabout, after I caught some sleep (which is night over here, just so you know ). I'll also make my character shortly after that. Yes, but this is just the first version. MSW didn't tell me where any of the details are. Should I feel insulted? No, seriously, why do you compare the map to random letters? It's a valley, all right? All right, it's a little bare of anything else, such as rivers, trees, etc., but it's still a map of a valley! -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Working on that map still, sorry. I've no internet connection from my own PC as of now, so I don't have AIM, only email and this board, and that sparsely. Character approval is no significant thing really. All that it does is keep out blobs of jelly, giant cicadas, flying mutant lizards and people with atom-splitting swords, and that's what we want anyway, right? Not at all. A board that deserves to exist - ie. is useful - will eventually find members that support it, advertising or no (although a subtle link or two can help early on after it's founded). Conversely, no amount of advertising can save a board that has no real justification for existing. In this case, we'll see. 10-20 members is well enough in the start, and it may turn out good in the end. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. That also depends on what you're using the other hand for, but we shall leave such naughty thoughts unuttered (besides, I think I know you despers good enough to realize that this was what you had in mind in the first place). I'd like to try out that forum. I've been to the closed Misc boards, and I must say they look pretty much like General does these days. An online community and its postage follows natural laws, and taking a forum away will only cause another board to take its place. If this board is closed, I bet you that within two months, Technical Problems is going to look like it... -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Well, you should talk... But satellite boards need 1.) A community distinctly more homogenous than that on the Parent board. 2.) A common purpose. That second one is hardest. Insane characters can work wonders as comic relief even in serious scenarios (I wonder, can sudden 'bouts' of humor damage an otherwise serious scenario?) Picture this dialogue: Look: At the very end of the precipice of this volcano stands a figure. He is wreathed in the smoke of the fire, but he doesn't seem very clear on where or who he is. Occasionally, he forces out an unnerving giggle. Name: "Well wouldn't you just like to know? Ha! I, the mighty Barnabas, will tell nobody my name!" 'BARN', 'MIGH': "Oh crap." He slaps his forehead, a little too strongly maybe, and staggers back under the jolt. "Well, no matter, you will never know my TRUE name." 'TRUE', 'NAME': "Barnabas, the fools called me. You get some supporters for supporting the draft, mostly those people who are a.) strongly supportive of war and b.) not affected by recruitment (perhaps being older than the limit). However, as the main point right now is to gain the non-voters (which are mainly the younger part of the population), this kind of move is not a good one, I should say. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Mercenaries seem to be a problem already during the war, as can be seen from the current situation at Abu Ghraib(sp?). They are not military officials and therefore can't be prosecuted by a military court... Concerning election and drafts. If the latter happens, it will of course be *after* the former. Bush might not be a genius, but even he will know to avoid that kind of thing during his campaign. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Or the Encyclopaedia Ermariana!
