Not that funny... I gulped when I saw that before scrolling down to the chickenhead.org footline to make sure it actually *was* a joke. From what I've heard recently, it's not that improbable; probable enough to scare me anyway (yes, I live in Germany, but I have both citizenships and will probably go to the US to study). Edit: Still, once you actually read it, I must agree it's quite amusing. What game are you talking about, just out of interest? Geneforge? And if so, I must say I fail to understand the gist of your post... there *is* a PC version of both games... so what is your point? -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. quote:No other author creates a world just for his languages, rather. quote:People claim that that's a non-original standpoint because thousands have it. However, in the now 3 years since I read it, I never came across someone sharing that point of view. You'll notice a definite shift in the fantasy written before Tolkien (basically, only children's fairy-tales, like the Narnia Chronicles) and that written after him. Even if the setting is completely different, the basic plot-twists and motives can be found everywhere if you look for it. Edit: Even a quoted — deserves fixing... Some basic math can be useful when balancing the damage values of a weapon. (I'm assuming from the documentation that damage and other variables are still determined using the xdy + z model, where you throw x dice with y sides each and add z to the result.) The minimum is always x + z, where as the maximum is xy + z. The average result is at x(y+1)/2 + z. So if you have 2d7+4 (two seven-sided dice, adding four to the result), you have a minimum of 6, an average of 12, and a maximum of 18 points. It is easier to decide whether a damage setting is reasonable if you have the values in those terms. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. No, it just used poor grammar. What it meant is, approximately: 1. You get webbed during combat (ie. by spiders or by spells.) You cannot avoid this by standing next to the web and looking at it. 2. You step into webs by mistake. It's easy to do double steps in Avernum if you click once. 3. You find it more comfortable to click twice (on the web and yourself), than to press L and click. All these are reasons for why you might get webbed despite the wonderful fact that you can clear webs by looking at them with L. :) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I don't think I've rated more than 5 people this year yet... whereas last year, not a week would pass in which I didn't rate 5. I guess it'll lessen more. The problem is, you're most incited to rate someone when you're either enormously pissed at the person, or intensely admiring, at this specific moment. I bet that more than 80% of all votes in total are either ones or fives. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Or the Encyclopaedia Ermariana! Got a brain? Go to Polaris! UA (paraphrased): "I am incapable of admitting I am wrong." That is not insanity. That is merely stupidity. Everyone knows that to ever gain any intelligence of any sort, the mind has to be able to revoke opinions it forms for the event that such opinions prove false at a later time. Otherwise the mind is malfunctioning, and its owner incapable of ever ending up in anything other than a a prison, a mental hospital, or a grave, or all of them in that order. In the hope that it will contribute to the probably futile process of repairing your thus malfunctioning mind, I tell you this: You are an ant. Nothing more. You are an ant in an anthill, dreaming of controlling that anthill and every single little ant in it. Right now you are a baby, and those close to you step around you carefully in order not to upset you because you are a cute little ant. This gives you the illusion of being able to 'manipulate' (that was your definition for imperfect control, I believe) others. Oh, the dreadful realization that you will come to when you see that those that 'obey' you are but few in the large anthill, and that all the others refuse to even bother with you, the stupid little ant unable to think or converse intelligently. And then, the terrible disillusioning despair that will grip you in the moment of realizing that the anthill is but one among millions in your country, your country but one among thousands on this planet, this planet but one among an infinite myriad in this universe, and even the universe just a limit that you cannot ever think beyond, let alone ever cross physically, let alone ever control. When you come to that realization (and you will, if you pursue your present path down far enough), you will either change your current philosophy (if that term can be applied to this rubbish) or kill yourself. If I was Alec, I would say that would be no great loss, but I don't. I hope, for your sake, that you will be capable of developing an intelligent and sane mind before you fall into that abyss of disillusionment. In that case, as Morpheus would say, "Welcome to the real world." Good luck. And that is all I have to say about this, really. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. If you've opened the source of the translator (and the .js files it uses) you'll see it's a rather primitive approach that can only search for one string in the database at the time, and needs to match that string with the entered one perfectly. I don't know enough javascript yet to know how to do it better, and I haven't found any translator sites that did so and were yet simple enough for me to understand and adapt... -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. quote:x = x ^ x, maybe? It would make it 1 if x was 0... and for any value larger than 1, it would be larger (unless I'm dumb and tired as hell, shorts are integers only, right?). For any value below 0, it would be positive but smaller than 1. Then, for any value x != 1, x = x * 0 ^ (x - 1) would make it 0. (if shorts can be non-whole numbers, the exponent of 0 should be in absolute value signs of course, to avoid giving a divide-by-0 if x<1.) So after these two operations, , x should be 1 if it was 1 or 0 before, and 0 if it was any other number before. I'm too tired to think of how to get rid of the 1... Can you use min to get the smaller of two values? If so, x = min .5,x *paranthesis omitted due to strange html error* before the two others should leave it as x if it was smaller than .5, or changing it to .5 if it was anything larger, such as 1. Probably bugridden, but if it works, you should have changed the x successfully in just three mathematical operations without any if-clause. :) -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Alec: The translator contains, as of now, only single words. You can look up 'vah' (people), 'na' (living), and 'tai' (crystal). My guess is your browser tries to display the zip file. That should finally give designers the opportunity to include 'pay per HP' healers... :) Unless the call for restoring HP does not allow for a specific number of HP, which would seem irrational, but not unlikely (can't be bothered to read through the docs again. is it?) In any case, it'll be possible to make destoning, resurrecting or reviving (for stoned, dust, or dead PCs respectively) separate services that vary in price (unless I'm a fool and that was in Avernum 1-3 all along). Not by much if you take into account that my Novah-English/English-Novah Translator allows to search in both directions without having to scroll... (though spelling flexibility is nonexistant, which should not matter much when searching for a Novah translation of an English word however) But anyway, I think I'll go and do a little GIFTS jig now after seeing that Drakey links to me not once, but twice, and on his front page no less! I absolutely love the musty smell of old books that have stood in a library for about 10-20 years or so. It's a wonderful scent, seriously. Oh, and a forest just after it has rained. Grahk could not have been anything but a surface explorer imho. That little peninsular is so insignificant that only someone who just happened to teleport directly onto it from the surface (someone tells you that is where the First Expedition first arrived) would be intrigued enough to put on a sign (and a reasonably well-written one in human language, too, ruling out goblins, Vahnatai, Sliths and most non-humans), saying he did so. Not in accord with arrogant Karzoth being the leader though... he doesn't seem the type to let anyone else discover a place and put his name under it. quote:Maybe Jeff read some discussions pertaining this on the board and decided to opt for more consistency? :P quote:. It is generally assumed that the Hawthorne she wanted to assassinate is the third, the second (her father) exiled her, and the first discovered Avernum.
