Supposedly they want women to register now too. I'm not sure if they are going to get the bill passed, but I have friends in Canada, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.  -------------------- I'm just too selfish to be Zen. Not that funny... I gulped when I saw that before scrolling down to the chickenhead.org footline to make sure it actually *was* a joke. From what I've heard recently, it's not that improbable; probable enough to scare me anyway (yes, I live in Germany, but I have both citizenships and will probably go to the US to study). It'll take a Democrat in the White House: Republicans will do anything to avoid wars requiring mass-mobilization, since conscripts have had the awkward tendency to ask for things like civil rights and economic redistribution once the fighting is over. Entirely different case. The mercenaries in that example were Moroccan tribesmen whereas those trying to overthrow democracy was Carlist farmers in the Pamplona area, the landowning and middle classes and the church. Furthermore, there are few to no parallels between the political situation of 1930s Spain and the present day USA. Mercenaries are a problem and a drain on resources in Iraq but once they leave they're not going to have an effect on America. Mercenaries seem to be a problem already during the war, as can be seen from the current situation at Abu Ghraib(sp?). They are not military officials and therefore can't be prosecuted by a military court... Concerning election and drafts. If the latter happens, it will of course be *after* the former. Humiliated, disgruntled and underfunded militaries are, of course, never the predominant element in the bloc of interests driving the establishment of authoritarian states, but they are the primary instrument -- as Roosevelt understood when he shipped MacArthur back to the Philippines in '35 (worked better than sending Franco to the Canary Islands). You get some supporters for supporting the draft, mostly those people who are a.) strongly supportive of war and b.) not affected by recruitment (perhaps being older than the limit). Certainly, the Foreign Legion was mostly Spanish, but amongst the ranks there were a fair amount of Marxists and the officers were right-wing not because they were officers but because if you were of that class, too poor to never work and not bright enough for the priesthood, you joined the army.
