Mmh. I never listen to music while I'm playing a game, only when I'm working. I've got just one big playlist for everything, too. There are even some things in it which I don't like at all but could never bother to remove, so I just skip to the next if they come up. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. I attempt to write, occasionally. Roleplaying, some stories, compendium entries for a 'world creation project' called the Santharian Dream... As of my last count, I'm at 100k words in total though, so I still have some a *long* way to go before it's even worth reading. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Of both series, I actually enjoyed the third part the most, and just *because* of its plot. Neither Escape from the Pit nor Crystal Souls have any sudden unforeseen twists. In Avernum I, you're thrown down by the Empire for being different. So you talk to some people, beat some baddies on the head and assassinate the emperor in the end. In Avernum II, you have to go down to the Vahnatai lands to convince them that you're the good guys and the Empire is the villain. You accomplish that, and beat the Empire up again. In Avernum III, you have to actually *look* for a solution. You have to travel around talking to people and examining evidence. In the end, the villain turns out to be someone entirely different than who you expected at first! From the widely accepted viewpoint that plot should be the primary concern of a game, I would give my vote to Ruined World. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. (Okay, after forgetting to post this for three hours and realizing that most of it has lost its point by now, I've cut some of it). Yes, the scenarios are inconsistent with each other. This, however, is not a failing. The scenarios involve different points in the history of the world of Ermarian, and the side the party is on varies. Why would that matter? They are separate stories, after all, in spite of the characters being the same. If you really insist on them fitting each other logically, you could always say the party was using some sort of time machine to travel between scenarios. I've heard rumors that Jeff considers an Avernum 4. On the site, there is mention of a mysterious 'Other' project he doesn't want to name yet. It could be that, but it also could be something entirely different. Whatever happens, I think there will be quite a lot of Blades of Avernum scenarios with the same setting as the series, so there'll sequels no matter what. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. 3. (and answering 4. too, probably) The general opinion seems to be that Blades of Exile is easier to handle for beginners, while Blades of Avernum requires a lot of training (and learning the scripting language). On the other hand, Blades of Exile has severe limitations, so if you come up with any original ideas for the gameplay (teleporting monsters, short movie scenes, etc.), it is far easier to incorporate them with Blades of Avernum. 6. No. Even though many agree that the Avernum engine allows for easier gameplay than the Exile one, nobody will abandon BoE. There are tons of good scenarios for BoE; more are still coming out, and they're still being played. Seeing as those most experienced with using BoE (and thus most capable of producing quality scenarios) also have the least trouble with its limitations (and thus the least incentive to switch to BoA), there will be good Blades of Exile scenarios out for yet some time. Wish you better luck than I had with that. Pity her ezboard seems to be unvisited for half a year as well (at least by herself). Ambrosia boards? I haven't thought of those yet... Isn't Ambrosia the producer of Escape Velocity? Edit: Unless I'm very much mistaken, however, Cavanoskus last posted there around May 27th too, which would coincide with her departure here. Well, you have the 5 posts, already. Don't stop posting now! I've played all of the games as well, but only those that were ported to PC... I liked the interface of Geneforge best, but I hugely preferred the plot of Avernum/Exile 3 (where Exile is imho better, but Avernum is easier to handle because of its interface). Exile 3 is actually the first game I played, after finding it on a shareware CD. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Or the Encyclopaedia Ermariana! Got a brain? Eferas was gasping by now. Several hours had past since he and Sylvain had separated from the main group. He was not used to long marches in the best of times, and certainly not after running this fast. Fortunately, Sylvain was not too far ahead of him. Only after Eferas completely caught up, he realized this was because Sylvain had stopped. He was casting his gaze about, looking among the trees. "There is mischief about here." "I feel it too. I can sense demons not far off." Eferas grew nervous. There shouldn't be any demons here. They were more than a mile away from the others now. "Do you think there may be an..." Sylvain didn't finish, because at that moment, there was a fearsome racket in the woods around them. At least a dozen imps sprang out between the trees and attacked immediately. Eferas was able to cast a shower of flame lances almost reflexively, several demons fell to the ground scorched. One of the imps approached him from behind, but he lay about with his staff, and that attacker, too, was felled. Sylvain quickly joined in with a demon-repelling ritual, which killed several more. The battle continued in this vein for some time, the two magic-users felling the weak demons like wheat-stalks. But there were far too many, and magical energy is limited. Before long, the two were tired by their spell-casting. I wonder where this force came from. It is as if it had been specifically sent to target us. Eferas thought, but was interrupted by a club to the head. His last thought was Why don't they kill us? Then he knew no more. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. OOC: MSW, 'mage' and 'wizard' are interchangeable terms afaik. Eferas is a mage, even though you would classify his powers as those of a wizard, following the above logic. Drakey, I'm with you. IC: "I assume that this Stone of Thunder is what caused the earthquakes that the survivor told about before we went on this journey. That would mean it is an artifact with powers over the Earth, and thus tremendously valuable to the demons, who could use it as an additional focus with which to summon more of their ilk here, and for other purposes." He stopped, then creased his brow again, while speaking. He seemed oblivious to the immediate danger around them, and he ignored the exasperated glances some of them shot him as he spoke on. "On the other hand, the portal is currently the only thing allowing the demons to remain here. They cannot stay on this plane by their own power for long, and once the bridge they came through is gone, they too must vanish. So whatever focus there is in the temple, once we destroy it, the greatest problem is solved. Only," he suddenly became nervous, "if they get the Stone before then, they don't need the portal." "Which means what?", Chadussid asked, barely able to contain his impatience. "Which means we have to hurry like hell. Literally." With that, he turned, drew his robe about him, and began to run as quickly as he could after Sylvain. He stopped briefly, and faced the group. "Keep them away from the bunker as long as you can. And, uh... fly, you fools!" OOC: Just couldn't resist that last one. [ Sunday, June 20, 2004 01:34: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Eferas stood up again with only marginal difficulty. He considered, angrily, but decided against a reaction. There would be time to deal with this fool later. For now, he had to undo the damage that had already been done. Flexing his fingers, he walked over to the prone body of Law. His skills did not extend to healing, but shocked nerves could be easily revived with certain spells. It wasn't pleasant, but they couldn't afford to have Chadussid's damnfoolery incapaciting any of their fighters right now. Placing his fingers just below the base of Raymond's skull, he mumbled. "Fer'Pha'kyl. Daen Kai'Ferpha." His fingers seemed to glow briefly, and Ray winced as he felt a scalding heat travelling down his spine. There was a brief shudder going through his whole torso as the spell reanimated the stunned nerves, and then Raymond sat up. "I advise you to cease this sort of thing." Eferas was looking at Chadussid, but it was clear it was directed at Kenthred equally. "There are many around who may feel that only a demon-possessed traitor would see an advantage right now in putting our own people out of action." -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. IC: "That is all you're going to say?" Eferas snorted even as he stood up. "You're going to let them cut each other apart for the demons' amusement?" His face darkened as if a thundercloud had suddenly moved over it - he had been practicing this particular expression in a mirror for several years, and it had paid off wonderfully. He looked for all the world like a wrathful wizard, and everyone who has ever seen one will agree that it can make a lasting expression. His staff was lifted appropriately, and he was even able to make his eyes glow with a fearsome fire. "You are going to stop this nonsense right now! I will pulverize the next person to show any sign of trouble!" That last one might not be entirely true, since he did have enormous qualms about frying fellow party members, even Chadussid, but he managed to pull it off convincingly enough. When Oskoth and Chadussid reluctantly sat down again, Eferas was quite relieved. Xarl was right. The work of a wizard is two parts magic to eight parts show. "And now we have to turn to more urgent concerns," Eferas said aloud again. "You are spouting nonsense, Chadussid. This is not a military undertaking, so you have no authority besides that which is granted you through your combat skills and experience. I, at least, can assure you that I am not currently possessed by demons. Firstly, I have undergone that more than once in my life, so I know how it feels. Secondly, even if I were, I could blast you into the nether, as well as anyone else who tried to confine me. You will just have to be satisfied with my word." And that has only partly solved the problem. Because someone here is indeed being possessed. If only I knew who. He cast his magical sense around, searching, but the presence was well-cloaked, and he could not trace it down to any particular person. He was slowly growing uneasy. The worst thing about possession was the surprise effect, anything else could be dealt with. As long as he did not know who to watch, the demons had the advantage. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Or the Encyclopaedia Ermariana! Got a brain? Go to Polaris! OOC: WarSlith, if you would, well, use normal capitalization on those words, they would imho sound a lot better. I prefer Hellslayer to HellSlayer, even though I don't know how anyone else feels about that. Also, this thing about instantly sensing people's allegiance sounds a bit too conclusive now. I'm certain that almost all of us want to keep the intentions/side of their characters secret for now. I know that I do, even though it seems pretty clear that Eferas is not possessed right now. -------------------- Visit The Santharian Dream and its RP board. Or the Encyclopaedia Ermariana!
