In keeping up my level of New World Order paranoia, I'm planning to read the Illuminatus trilogy as soon as I can get my hands on it. Hundred Years of Solitude was just recommended to me by my father; his recommendations are often somewhat dry but still fascinating to read, so I will. ;) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! quote:If you are skilled with language, "making people feel bad" is actually of benefit. Who would give a thought about the hundred thousand dead if it were not for the touching accounts of eyewitnesses? You cannot really empathize unless you can imagine the tragedy - and you cannot imagine a number. Likewise, the busty blonde chick is reacted to by the barkeeper because it's one person. The Stalin quote is quite apt here: You cannot sympathize with a number. Even if you do sympathize, you do it by imagining individual persons in that crowd and sympathizing with their personal fates. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! There aren't that many Avernites, and anyone who hasn't come up in the first settlement wave into what belonged to Karnold Province can't be that desperate to leave the caves. It's not like living space in Valorim is short in this day and age. So why would the Avernites want to colonize a new island? Not that I wouldn't find it fascinating myself. I'd love my players to be part of a "pioneer" mission and secure new lands in preparation of a colony. I'd just want the storyline to hold water... -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Deep inside, I cry. When this topic goes unanswered for a whole day apart from a plug for a non-existant forum, then you know what the most noble art of Roleplay has come to on Spiderweb. *marks off Creeper's dead board as number 7 this year* Or 8, lost count. Even more than last year. I'd come to join (the new Arena that is, not the other one), but then again I'm extremely short for time these days. Pity about it. Unless, of course, the stars have nothing to do with it whatsoever. New Year Resolutions... Finish one of those numerous BoE/BoA scenario attempts still sittin on my hard drive. Read some new books again (almost no time in the last few months). And while we're talking about unattainable goals... start a roleplay on Spiderweb that actually comes to conclusion... -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Unbelievable. We have things like this going on on our planet, and people have nothing better to do than bash each other's heads in and argue whose God is better. If the estimates are correct (and I see no reason to doubt that), then this earthquake has killed thirty times the number of people who died in the World Trade Center. Will people call this "a turning point in world history" or "the disaster of the century"? I wouldn't hold my breath. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Actually in Avernum 1 too. Perhaps obvious, but some things do get changed between the two series. This didnt. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I'd turn it all the way around. This being a Milgram experiment, the 'victim' is obviously an actor who is not actually feeling any pain. You get money for cranking up a fake electric chair - no moral problems involved at all! -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Shoot the bloody giraffe. You don't want it to kill someone in your family and get away with it. I'm anti-Death Penalty normally, but that's for humans, not for evil magical animals.
