Yup. 'Tis one of the many wonders of Spiderweb, and possibly one of the reasons General and Misc have flourished throughout history (the insanity and the roleplays also contribute)

Okay...

testing, testing...

Seems to be work fine. See, I got a connection at my new room lately, but the Spiderweb forums were unviewable due to DNS trouble. Now that I'm using a web proxy, it works fine, and luckily I'm able to log in with it.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but this is as relevant a thread as anything as I couldn't be in this roleplay without a connection from at home (I like to write my RP posts in the evening, not looking over my shoulder to check if my boss is coming in. :P

Anyway, the CD will follow once you post the actual RP thread with the intro. :)

No, we are not. Other creatures can, by our standards, do things we would see as evil - an alligator killing a human is doing something that we would see as evil if we did it ourselves, no?

Of course, being rational, we cannot expect other creatures to adhere to human values (unless we're dumb).

It's just that no other creature has a definition of good/evil that they can communicate to us.

Maybe, alligators have a code of morals too, which they occasionally break? And humans do it all the time, but the alligators don't see that as evil, because after all humans don't understand alligator morals? :P

Around three years, but not more. I remember seeing an older look before the wood theme, and I only visited the site in Summer 2001 at the earliest (I remember downloading BoE at that time). This is the third design I've seen.

I think we established a while ago that it was the love of money, not money, that was the root of evil. So, working from

girls = money squared,

the love of girls = the love of (money squared)

the love of girls = evil divided by...

mh. This doesn't seem to work.

---

Now back on topic:

I'm willing to offer a few guesses, though the love of money seems to take the price for now.

- Organized Religion

- Politics

- Opinions.

I'd like to try this out, even though I'm still not convinced it will work. ;) We'll see.

I've got my perfect character already, so in this case we'll just have to make some E2 stats for him. By the way, what happens if one of the characters dies?

Oh, and seeing you've been gone for a long time and might wonder how to call me. I'm Arancaytar; the displayed name changes on a regular basis right now...

Offensive? I certainly don't mind the name of God when it isn't abused for waging holy crusades or converting people to one's own belief. God's blessings, and good luck with this.

That said, I'm sure that a little spreading of the word, especially online (and especially in the blogosphere) will be tremendously effective.

That also said, while I lack the initiative and know-how to set up a fund, I would be more than happy to donate to a given paypal address.

Definitely true. Doing some speculation on my own, I am pretty sure there is even migration both ways. Think about it (from the inhabitants', not Jeff's viewpoint) - the surface is largely empty of hostile forces, and the rest of them is rapidly diminishing. Avernum, on the other hand, has potential to expand (the caves haven't been all explored), and has many dangers waiting. An adventurous explorer would desire nothing more than to go down to Avernum, and now that traffic is open, I'm sure a lot of surface people go down there...

Do you mean infinite, or indefinite? The latter implies a loose definition that can be adapted to fit the narrative - usually a good thing. The former implies god-modding. That's where the by now standard anti-god-mod rule kicks in, disallowing players from making their characters more powerful than is feasible.

It works based on commmon sense.

...

Yes, I know how we're on Spiderweb here. That's not the point.

Common sense and a little sense of how to tell a story, even here, will serve us better than numbers. Trust us, we can manage our characters given a little free reign. :D

I have nothing against Jump&Runs. But I prefer RPGs with a passionate bias, and I liked Spiderweb Software games for their plots (see, I'm neither a nine-year-old nor a septuagenarian eskimo). Geneforge, in spite of all the bad things that may be said about it, does have an intriguing and complex plot. For the third one to lose this and enter a genre that - while perfectly fine in its own right - would not fit the deeper character of the whole series, would be disappointing. ;)

Mostly, the valuable information in the interview seemed to be

quote:
As for Geneforge 3's setting, most of the game takes place on the Ashen Isles, a chain of five islands that is remote but influential. It is a place of Shaper learning and research. There is a lot of power there, which is why the course of the rebellion there is highly significant.

The environments of the islands vary widely. One is swampy, one is dry and rocky, and the northernmost is a wind-blasted sheet of rock and ice. Each has its own flora and fauna, and its own set of challenges.
Which means that not only has the timeless Island-cliche proven useful once again, but also GF is beginning to look like an Arcade Jump&Run. I just hope you won't have those islands all lined up in a row numbered Levels 1-5 and there's a boss at the end of each one...

I liked the other menu... :(

But I agree it does look a lot smoother now. It's just that the light-brown color wood theme looked better than Avernum's blue-green thing. More natural.

Btw, the old design is still available in the google-cache of the site: here.

Edit: In fact, Jeff has gone to great lengths to preserve the original template - by changing the capitalization of the image filenames. :D I wonder if what we're looking at is a permanent change or just some fiddling around.
