On a semi-related note, signatures are also great for self-plugging. I thought no one ever clicked on links in a sig, but they do, actually. On the Encyclopedia, out of ten visitors about 2 come from Google, 3 come from Drakey's Demesne and 5 come from the forum... -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Never knew that trivia... but it's become one of the web words by now. pwnt, pwnage, pwning, I PWN YUO111. I believe it is pronounced "powned". Exile, just to run contrary to the masses. Also, it appears I cast the deciding vote for now. 15 Exile to 14 Avernum! :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! They will also be the first digits of several people's social security number. And the last digits of several more. :P Reversing speech just generates a sort of "white noise" that you can give any sense you want to if you listen long enough. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I prefer searching for hidden messages in reverse speech. Mainly because it is intensely creepy to listen to a recording of a human voice played backwards. Sounds like gurgling and speaking while inhaling. By now, I can even say certain things backwards myself and reverse the recording so it makes sense. And now *that* sounds creepy. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Ancient Domains of Mystery had an aging feature, but usually you never even got a year into the game even with the most extended exploring. If you died from old age it was because some ghost had got you. :P I agree about suspending reality and time; I think that goes for forum roleplaying characters as well. I've rejuvenated dear old Eferas... how often now? Twice? He just loves to travel around, so why make him age? :) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I'm quite sure there is no such thing as aging in any of the Exile games. I've heard rumors about aging being in Nethergate or some of the Avernum games, but I don't think that's true... -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Well, they could... but I guess they just decided to go the whole way and abolish the problem altogether. It makes sense; there is a whole lot more traffic and posting here than on any forum I've seen yet that had avatars. If they hosted them, they would be paying for that traffic. Can they control the filesize if they don't host it themselves? -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I expect if mental institutions were pleasant, humanity would become insane - sometimes my only motivation for holding on to what I call sanity is the idea of getting locked up. Very good point there. Actually, the skill really is "assassination" a lot of the times in my 1-pc playing style, which involves stalking through dungerons blessed and hasted to the brim, with sanctuary and stealth cast, and then creeping up on monsters and killing them with a few strikes. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I remember remembering what it was like to be a n00b. Alec, of course, gets to titter, being able to stick on a lot more "rememberings" into that than pretty much anyone else here. Apart from Thuryl perhaps. That said, "tabletop" usually associates with "strategy games" like Warhammer. Is it really an expression also used for D&D and what I have before known as "pen & paper" RPGs? Not that there is a real difference: Each would require Spiderweb to enter a very different market than they're now in, and if Jeff thinks the same way now as he has for the past ten years he won't try to expand. Maybe a pity. [ Monday, December 06, 2004 21:12: Message edited by: Unheralded He Homeward Sped ] -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! The thing is, a local industry "bolstered" by in-land demand might be stronger locally, but at the same time the price of exports decreases. On one hand, this raises demand for exports - on the other, it makes those exported products cheaper, so there is more production cost at the same value. (to explain further, this eventually lowers production standards and quality) And of course, sending exports to America becomes less attractive to, for example, European nations. Which lowers international competition and is in effect another subsidy to local industry. It's only a good trend if your goal is to separate your nation from the rest of the world. Of course, that appears to be the general plan anyway. Myself... I'm paranoid (if that's a medical condition), and I may have a slight degree of Bipolar that comes out when stress levels rise. They tried to stick Attention Deficit Disorder on me (and drug me with Ritalin), and I'm glad they didn't succeed. Since most of my social contacts are via the Internet and I'm quite reserved when it comes to talking to people in real life, I could even see a quack coming up with a mild case of Asperger's. Funny how crazy you seem when you stop to look at yourself. Relations: I have an aunt who refuses to give us her non-indexed telephone number, but insists upon calling us at any opportunity and any hour, greeting us in a shrill voice and announcing herself as our "crazy old auntie". Does that count? -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! quote:You get those too? :D At one point I was really wondering about how many variations they could produce of a subject containing the word hurting, ("Your boyfriend is hurting", "How is my wife hurting", "Is my daughter hurting", etc.) The last mail of that particular series was a nicely rounded conclusion: "She is no longer hurting." I've had dozens of those; by now, any mail that contains the words "pain", "appointment", "sale" or "software" lands in the trash if the receiver is not on my contact list. So if you're going to send me a mail and want to be sure it arrives, just include my ICQ number (282026638) anywhere in the subject header, and it'll get through. :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Since Exile was rather certainly the first game to be released by Jeff Vogel, and it is somewhat unlikely he'd found a company before his first game were ready for release, I'd guess the release date of Exile coincides closely with the date the company was founded (which was November 1994, if you hadn't noticed). -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki!
