What is it with game consoles? At least with PC/Mac games you can pretend to yourself you are using the computer for non-frivolous reasons.

We have no record of any non-vahnatai ever attaining bokhood, with or without vahnatai aid. Seeing as the ritual is one of the most closely guarded secrets of the vahnatai, I don't see it being learned (let alone mastered) by humans anytime soon...

- Go to your profile.

- Find your joining date.

- Calculate the number of days between that day and now.

- Divide your post count by that.

Et voilá. :)

This is 5715/1065 = 5.37 for me, incidentally.

Edit: When I have time I'll add that feature to the endeavor thingie.

What in the world happened?

Anyway, congratulations, Dikiyoca!

Very simple. On the floor of our dormitory, we had a kind of arrangement, in which we got together every second week to clean our common kitchen, and our floor speaker would attend the monthly house meetings. I was very surprised to find out yesterday that nobody had attended the meeting on Wednesday, and all internet access on our floor had therefore been cut.

After some time, I found a way to connect, by starting a shell session on my dorm's mailserver, then using that to start a shell session on our computing center's server cluster (which I can do because I work there ;) ), and then using lynx to go online. It works, but it isn't the nicest way to surf.

Congratulations, Dikiyoba! May you give the board ten times that yet and more. :)

And yes, I'm relieved it's none of those things that are mentioned in the title.

Really? It's been out for years? I thought it was more recent than that. :P

You'll soon be free of lice with all that nit-picking, Dikiyoba. :P

Edit: I edited the 4 to four in an effort to at least keep some semblance of sanity around her. That's probably a lost cause though.

Trust me, keeping a semblance of sanity around her is the most lost cause you will ever encounter. No sanity around Dikiyoba, no sir. ;)
(sorry. you made that too easy...)
(and sorry for the double post. There is a reason. Severe technical limitations. I'll explain later if desired.)

I discovered Avernum on the website after finding Exile III on a shareware CD. Suffice to say that when I first saw the CD, I never thought it would affect, one way or another, the next five years of my life (as it now has). My favorite game is Avernum 4. No, wait. I'm messing with you. It's Blades of Exile.

Regarding Drakey's Novah: It is invented, but "made up" is a misleading term seeing as the vocabularly is chosen in such a way as to give the names in the game a meaning. In a way, it's partly invented and partly reverse-engineered.

The agreement does, however, say:

quote:
Spiderweb Software, Inc., reserves the right, but does not assume the responsibility, to restrict any communication which Spiderweb Software, Inc. deems in its discretion to be harmful to individual guests, damaging to the communities which make up the Spiderweb Software Community, or in violation of Spiderweb Software, Inc.'s or any third-party rights. Disruptive behaviors in the chat rooms include (but are not limited to):

...

These disruptive behaviors are grounds for removal; the Spiderweb Software site administrator is the final judge of whether a guest's behavior qualifies as disruption.

So it does say that regardless of the rules as they are now laid down, Jeff can arbitrarily decide to censor anything he doesn't want to have on the boards, from abortion debates to out-of-context quotes to bashings of Avernum 4. :P

Edit: This entire post is one big spoiler.

Scroll down until you see my signature if you don't want to see it.

I see Zeviz has apparently solved it completely (without any "unlucky" outcomes), but I'll keep this up:

Divide into 4 groups of 3, A,B,C and D. Now, once you know in which of the groups the odd ball is and whether it is lighter or heavier, you can determine which it is with a single additional attempt.

Compare A and B.

1.

If A<B, compare A and C

1.1

If A=C, the odd one is in B and is heavier.

1.2

If A<C, the odd one is in A and is lighter.

2.

If A>B, compare A and C

2.1

If A=C, the odd one is in B and is lighter.

2.2

If A>C, the odd one is in A and is heavier.

3.

If A=B, compare A and C.

3.1

If A<C, the odd one is in C and is heavier.

3.2

If A>C, the odd one is in C and is lighter.

3.3

If A=C, the odd one is in D, but you do not know if it is lighter or heavier. You're partly screwed, but you might still find out something, at least. Compare two balls of D.

3.3.1

If the balls are equal, the third ball is the odd one, but you still don't know if it is lighter or heavier.

3.3.2

If the balls are not equal, you're screwed.

--------------

With this method, you are sure to narrow down the possibilities to two balls, in the worst case.

Since there are 24 possibilities you must check for, your chance of finding out both the ball and its property with this method is 75% (ie, the chance that it is not in D).

Your chance of finding the ball is 83.3~% (with 8.3~% probability of not finding out how the ball differs from the rest).

Your chance of only narrowing it down to two is 16.6~%.

------------------

I can't think of a way to improve on this strategy, though...

If you are an ISP, you can still get shut down. Depending on whether you are in Washington, Sibiria, Hong Kong or a satellite-connected server farm on a ship in international waters, it might take a bit longer I suppose, but if you actually violate the law, it is more a question of time.

Bypassing web hosts, there are far cheaper ways to remain quite anonymous, which I saw when looking for web hosts last year. Google for "offshore webhosting". The above applies, naturally.

Taking half a minute to explain the way to some street or other instead of mumbling "sorry, I don't know" and walking off, for example? It's the little things that count, surely...

I don't think it's an aberration as such. I get a very good feeling when I know I have been useful to someone. Note that this feeling is seamlessly related to the good feeling that results from fame, recognition and admiration - I don't claim my "drive to be useful" to be selfless at all.

I get the sense that different definitions of the word Liberal are being used in this debate, and unfortunately I cannot really describe any of them, let alone decide which is the correct one.

Could everyone who uses it in the future please define what "liberal" means to them, whether (and in what way) they see themselves as one, and whether the term is positive, negative or neutral when they use it?
