True, true.

One thing I have already noticed is that the initial 20 or 30 responses painted a moderately different picture for a few questions. This suggests that the people who spend the most time here (and hence are likely to see the survey sooner) are a demographically distinct subset.

No, but I'm leaving the state in a couple of months. I'm beyond done with it.

Aran: is it possible to restrict all new accounts from editing until they have been individually approved?

I'm willing to invest the time to do that, and it seems a lot more productive than the amount of time you've had to waste dealing with the spam on EE.

One of my high school teachers (Kel, can you guess who?) stopped me in a hallway once, shortly before my graduation, and implored me to make sure I find someone to love in college, because "you never really get another chance." He was fairly old and lived with his mother. It was kind of depressing.

Really, who advises that? Plenty of groups (though a small minority of the population) advise waiting until marriage, but I've never heard of waiting until you're 21.

Currently there are 43 virgins in the poll. The youngest 43 members cover every member 21 years and under! 24 of those members are at least 18, and it seems obviously that a handful of them -- at least -- must be sexually active. So we have some 25 or 30 year old virgins, if not a 40 year old virgin...

Transformers was horrendous. They completely killed it. Everyone I know who saw the original cartoons hated it. It mainly seems to have fans in 12-year-olds who want to join the army.

Sweeney Todd kind of disappointed me. I mean, it was well done, but it just felt like Tim Burton making the same movie for the 20th time. Johnny Depp in white face, disaffected and injured, with cutting implements in his hands, we've never seen that before...

The Bourne Ultimatum was awesome, and is hands down my pick for best of 2007.

I have contemplated the idea of passing it off to somebody before.

If I do that, it would probably be to Jewels, because I know she has the capacity to see sense in other people's opinions even when they are different from her own.

However, as I have said before, that will certainly not happen while this thread is getting spammed up.

Different people have different ideas of rich and poor. I avoided the "rich" label and in retrospect I wish I'd avoided "middle class" and "poor" as well. In the US at least, there's a tendency for a big chunk of the upper class to claim that they are close to average and just "upper middle class".

But it's all relative.

Just say that Religion = religious beliefs. Atheism is definitely a religious belief. It is definitely not an organized religion (at least not to my knowledge), which is what many people think of when they see "religion".

Now, back to the regularly scheduled topic please. If you want to have a huge argument about science and religion yet again, do it in a topic without a poll, s'il vous plait.

In the spirit of past demographics threads, here's a new spiderweb census. This one is a poll instead of an invitation to post your own responses. That makes gathering data easier, but it also makes the answers necessarily more restrictive.

This is particularly egregious for categories with lots of possible answers (religion, language, and nontraditional gender come to mind) so feel free to post your "other" answers in the thread.

For these categories I took most of the printed options from my previous analysis so I could arbitrarily include the more likely answers without digging through wikipedia for hours on end.

The trick is to invert your nest and, in doing so, subvert the dominant paradigm of the outside world.

"The wide world is all about you; you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot forever fence it out." - JRR Tolkien

"Fantasy is true, of course. It isn't factual but it is true. Children know that. Adults know it too, and that is precisely why many of them are afraid of fantasy. They know that its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary, and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living. They are afraid of dragons, because they are afraid of freedom." - Ursula LeGuin

The Asp Gloves make poison worse whenever you are poisoned, but they don't spontaneously do anything to you. I'm pretty sure they just affect poison and not disease.

The Pyrrhic Necklace diseases the party spontaneously just like the uranium bars.

I move for no run-off. I deliberately structured this poll to avoid the need for a run-off, as the poll isn't about choosing your favorite, but gathering information on the appeal of different choices. barred received 11 positive votes and 4 negatives. geneforge received 9 positive votes and 6 negatives. sucia received 6 and 4. Clearly, barred elicited the most positive reaction overall, while sucia elicited the most subdued reaction.

Aran, I know that _you_ dislike barred. It is after all your domain, and your generosity that is providing the site, so if you simply don't want barred I don't think anyone will object to your vetoing it. But let's not drag this on forever.

14 votes is what the last poll got, I believe. So it looks like the winner is

Sucia Archives

at

barred.ermarian.net

I voted against Sucia Archives, but I'm slowly being sold on it, and I think it'll be a good name. The barred subdomain is clever and gives the site some character, even if it's more obscure than geneforge would be.

Aran, make it so.

Since some new ideas have appeared with seeming consensus since the first poll, here's a new iteration of the poll.

Note that you do NOT have to choose the "like" or "dislike" option for every possible title. If you're neutral, just don't pick it for either.

There appears to be a general consensus that "Sucia" is the best theme for the wiki title. No one has posted otherwise, anyway. The lack of a Sucia option on the poll probably explains most of the Terrestia votes. If anyone *is* really attached to a Terrestia title or domain, feel free to post your affection in the thread.
