I'm kind of interested in figuring out how to teach 3rd level Magic Vision to my mage. I really like being able to find everything with it. Alternatively are there any basic items that allow flying? If so, what's the item # so I can get it via the character editor?

Actually, I wish Jeff could have put in at least a little bit of information about how to use his scenarios as working examples of scenarios (like how he specifically set up shops, or how we could edit them). It probably would help people with making their own scenarios. I'd start working on a few myself, but I'm too lazy. :P I'd be willing to help anyone who is good with the editor come up with ideas though.

Jeff assigns numbers at random to various quests and questions in his hint book. Each number corresponds with an answer or tip, but since none of the answers are in the order that you encounter the questions, you don't have to really worry about spoilers. It's a very practical design. So if you can afford to buy the book, feel free, but you could also just come online and ask the questions you need answered too, and for free to boot.

I won't claim to be very good at this stuff, but even if I started a scenario, I probably wouldn't finish it until about 5 years had passed. Anyhoo, here's an idea for a town that fits both Drakey's idea and cuts down on things unrelated to the scenario directly.

Picture this: an army encampment. It is where your first mission begins. Either through an attack on it by enemy forces, or a task given to your "infiltration unit" by a colonel (or a general, I'm not very good with military ranks). You go out kill the enemy wizard or kill off a large number of his subordinate wizards. All of the spells maintained by said mages suddenly break apart upon the death of their creator/s (yes I'm stealing this from Mercedes Lackey's books).

When you return to the camp, everything is in shambles. The magical energy released by the exploding spells has wreaked havoc and is twisting reality. Then you find out that the Mage-lord that you supported has been assassinated and that the problems were caused by his spells all ripping apart (or by the enemy weapon that was used to kill him). Each time you finish a quest to rescue someone, or gather information, or destroy some magical monster, something in the camp changes. On top of that, people are evacuating the area, so there are fewer and fewer people that you can talk to, but they now have more to say. Eventually, you will reach the point where the party evacuates too, but that they need to sheppard the most recent casualties out to a safe rendezvous.

In just about every part, the town changes, in some cases drastically, in others, very little; but the town is a dynamic part of the scenario. On the other hand, since just about everyone is a soldier, you don't have to find houses or jobs for them; all of the "streets" are straight and neat; and, almost none of the people have to have original dialogue, just give them a speech window that tells about how you talked to the soldiers and that they chatted with you while they were off duty (or told you that they can't talk because they are heading out for their daily duties).

I know, I probably shouldn't talk, because I don't really intend to write my own scenarios, but I thought I might be able to at least help generate ideas for other people.

I'm with you on thatone. Don't any designers even look at the list of things that evil overlords absolutely must take into account when they come up with their master plans? Just to point it out, in case you have been missing it: click on the third link in my signature. It takes you to the Evil Overlord List. Try making an antagonist that actually pays attention to some of the little details mentioned in the List.

Good work TM! Nice solid first non-Spidweb scenario. I loved the moral ambiguity you kept throwing in. Of course, since I have this issue with authority, I always betray the Empire every chance I get, so I was kind of dissappointed that I didn't get to wipe out Ashton Vale.

Oh well you can't have everything

In V's Castle, there are several doors that require using the unlock spell to get at them. My spell doesn't seem to be a high enough level. I've gotten it as high as this scenario sells the spell. Do I have to find some scrolls or something, or is there a place where I can get it up above level 3?

Okay, that answers a few questions, like what is in the castle in the area I can't get to (stairs), and my questions about Vahlkos.

I have scouted the area before (via the secret passage) but I haven't been able to find a way to the stairs without being spotted by a guard. I'm going to have to assume that I need to beat Vahlkos to a bloodless pulp before I can talk to him a second time; and that after I speak to Maynard about the encounter, I will be allowed to search the castle without having to sneak around guards.

Also, the lost husband and the lost Apprentice mage. Are they in V's castle as well, or will I have to go look elsewhere?

ok, here are some specifics:

How do I get Maynard to talk about Vahlkos?

How do I get Vahlkos to not attack me as soon as he meets me?

Is there any way past the doors in the spawning pits?

How do I get permission to look at whatever it is Maynard is hiding in his castle? I can see it via Far Sight, but only on the mini-map.

I'll post some more as I think of/encounter them.

I'm on DwtD and I am having problems figuring out what to do in some of the caves with undead, is there a link to a walk through or hint page around here for this scenario?

23. In General, you can usually find something that belongs in Miscellaneous, The Forum Which Is No More.

24. You can always run from your enemies, but they will always know exactly where to find you, no matter how well you hide from them.

I would have to say that between this post and it's predecessor, I have never before seen such a display of verbal abuse. For those who tried to damp it down, I commend you.

I do appreciate the history lessons, although I would feel a bit better about it if the discussion weren't completely one-sided. I would like to at least see a mention of any humanitarian (Serbia/Montenagro/Bosnia-Herzogovenia (sp???)) efforts that had gone along with the troops. Feel free to ignore any concerning Iraq though, as we went in because someone wanted a war to boost his popularity rating, not for humanitarian reasons.

While I do feel ashamed of what our country has done, I also feel that we also need to know what our government has done.

The single most powerful statement that can be said of America is that, from it's inception, the Constitution incorporated a method for peaceful transfer of power, and a way for unjust laws to be changed. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean anything to those who Corporate America has decided to Do Something About, as they are most likely dead at the hands of the American military.

Actually, being able to chose where you put your summoned creatures would be nice. Especially if you could specify the type of monster you were going to summon, or at least the type of creature (melee, missile, magic, fire-breathing, undead, etc.). Give the spells a low maximum range (say, five spaces at most) and then allow the summoner to choose where the beasties will show up. That would allow a more tactical use of the summoning spells.

OOC: Actually, that's spelled cinder, not sinder.

IC: Nicodemus doesn't like that fire that is chasing them. He searches his mind for a spell to destroy the flames. As he runs he carefully mutters a spell and creates a spectral hand. The hand moves with Nicos as he runs. He puts on a brief spurt of speed, and then turns around and looks back at the oncoming flames. Casting another spell, he sends the spectral hand at the flames. As soon as the hand touches the quickfire, something happens. The flames immediately stop, as if they had been frozen in place. As Alamir's Fundamental Breakdown spreads throughout the magical flames, the quickfire stops dead, a flame frozen into solidity. With a shudder, the flames begin to crack. Exploding with the noise of a wrecking ball going through a warehouse full of aquariums, the quickfire shatters like glass. Back in the pit, where the phoenix egg had been opened, lay the things used to make a container for quickfire, along with the components of quickfire itself.

Unfortunately for Nicodemus, when the frozen flames had exploded, he had been caught in the blast, and was torn to peices by the freezing shards of fire. When Vaitar-ka looked back, all he saw was a bloody form that looked vaguely like it had been humanoid at one point. Offering up a silent blessing for a safe journey beyond, the vahnatai respected the willingness to face the impossible to save others. He was in awe of the power that the human must have possessed to destroy unleashed quickfire while running from it, after he had already been in several battles where his only weapon was magic.

OOC: Yes, I killed off my character. I got tired of him, and I haven't really done much to add to the RP besides annoy FB. Have fun running through caverns, getting lost and then having the plot change from your planned ending as someone else *cough*flaming blade*cough* takes the story, runs with it, and completely ruins your plan to bring the quest to a conclusion. :D

What's wrong with Robert Aspirin? He spoofed just about everything in his Myth series. The last few were definately lacking, but the first ones were great. Phule's Company is also good, but in that one he spoofs science/military fiction.

My little sister introduced me to Pratchett's work, and I do enjoy it. Some parts of the books that I have read seem just a bit over done though. Douglas Adams' books, while good, also suffer from this at times.

I tend to stick to fantasy and sci-fi in general though, so I'll keep my nose out of the debates concerning mysteries and detective stories.

Interesting note here, try typing in various names as website addresses (ie www, amy, com; www, alex, com; etc.). It's surprising how much porn you can find just by using common female names. With guy's names you tend to get businesses and such.

Just a wierd fact for all you people who are interested in that sort of thing. :D

EDIT: can't get it to show a random name with .com, because it keeps trying to turn it into a link.

Flicking his fingers, Nicodemus sends Outcast's orb bouncing and rolling into a wall. Nicos picks up the coin and rubs some dust off of it. Nodding to himself, he flips the coin up into the air. While the coin is still spinning, Nicos releases a spell and the coin suddenly stops in mid-air. The coin stretches and thins, until it becomes a large gold-colored mirror. Nicos' eyes burn ellow as he stares into the mirror, which is definately not showing his reflection.

Nicos reaches into his belt pouch and takes ahold of something. With a few firm tugs, nearly two feet of gnarled oak is in Nicos' hands. He keeps pulling until he has a six foot long staff. He gestures with the staff, and the mirror clouds and then clears again.

After scrying the area for several minutes, Nicos points to the new archway and announces, "Stay away from that path over there. It leads to an ambush." He gestures toward the caves that they had been following, "That way is an ambush as well, but much less dangerous." With a hissing noise, the golden mirror disintegrates as Nicos' eyes return to their usual grey.

OOC: Actually, I was thinking that your character would eventually return to his original size, but only after a long period of time. Whoever said that the orb was the reason why you were shrunk? Take your time restoring your character's height, or the condition might become more permanent. I don't trust you enough yet to take the chance of letting you actually take part in any sort of combat.

OOC: FB, I would suggest that your character stay small for now, as it will prevent you from having him join combat, and allow him to move through areas that aren't accessible to other members of the party. For example, small windows and cells won't be able to stop your character, and the fact that you are the size of a large rat means that you can hide easily in shadows. I should also remind you that you have no weapons, and can't even lift any normal sized weapons at the moment.

IC: Quietly muttering a spell, Nicos gains the ability to see heat. Scanning around, he sees the trail of the lone vahnatai mage who fled the area. "This way!" He strides off and immediately trips over a stalagtite. Muttering, he stands back up and makes his way carefully, keeping track of the fading trail left by the creature.

I made up this name in a post some time ago here on Spidweb. I was pitying people who have common names, like Bob, or John. I gave an example of a very unique name. It can roughly be taken to mean "Apocalypse, bringer of Hell."

Other names I have taken online are: Soul_eater, Soul Render, Mind Ripper, Soul Flayer, Earth Breaker, Vengeance is Mine, Throat Ripper, Dark Heart, and sqwfrblvn.

The last one is a word that Calvin made up when he was playing Scrabble with Hobbes. I've actually tried playing it too, but no one would let me do it :( .
