It's an idea that's been floated before. Probably not.

Referring to people by names instead of numbers is just an "aesthetic thing", too. Do you want to start barcoding people?

Because my attitude toward a message's dialog picture in BoE was honestly analogous to that toward a person's name; it may not carry any real information, but it's surprisingly important to your overall impression of them.

Is this for Blades of Exile? You'd probably have better luck asking in the Blades of Exile forum.

Make sure the custom graphics files are in the same folder as the scenarios, and in the correct format (.bmp for Windows, .meg for Macs). Also, if you use a Mac, try using a different program to open zipped scenario files; older versions of Stuffit can damage .meg files.

You might want to consider putting more points into shaping skills to make your creations more powerful. Also, make sure your creations have plenty of Dexterity.

You've obviously never played BoE. Dialogs have enormous value, both practical and sentimental. Play a BoE scenario like Doom Moon II or Falling Stars and tell me it'd be the same without the dialog pictures.

And the "workaround" bloats file sizes horribly if it's used for more than a couple of dozen dialogs (some BoE scenarios have used literally hundreds of dialogs with custom images.)

To give you an idea of just how important an issue this is, at least two respected designers have threatened to stop designing if dialog pictures are not implemented in BoA. Maybe, just maybe, you should trust the word of people who know what they're talking about.

Yes. The plot assumes that the party is a 1-PC named Vandell. He should also have the Chronic Disease ailment, but you can do without it if it annoys you (which it will). Apart from that, stats don't really matter.

DB, the "Exile II save file" message is a known bug in BoE.

There are different versions of the save file for Mac and Windows. Do you have the right one for your computer?

Stats aren't very important in this scenario anyway. Just use a normal low-to-medium-level PC and name him Vandell.

By the way, if you don't want to use magic, you'll have to get by without using the healing sceptre, unless you can justify it in non-magical terms.

If you send Jeff an idea, then legally, he cannot use it unless he can prove he came up with the idea first or signs a contract with you for the rights. And he's not going to pay you royalties.

So don't send him ideas.

That's been discussed before. It seems as if Cloud of Blades has a component of its damage proportional to the monster's HP; this is pretty noticeable on, say, Licgan in EM as well.

Poll: Password protected scenarios: what do you think? in Blades of Avernum

Well, so far there have only been 5 designers for BoA. Jeff Vogel didn't use a customised editor; Khoth, Eldiran and TM have, and I don't know about Erik Westra. :P

It's naive to demand that every scenario design tool be regularly updated just so that it's usable at all.

In any case, a reasonably secure scenario encryption system requires more changes to the engine than you seem to think. For one thing, encrypted scripts would no longer be editable in an ordinary text editor, so Jeff would have to create a whole new user interface just for editing scripts -- something which he's clearly expressed an unwillingness to do.

Just because the BoA engine can recognise them doesn't mean that scripts can. An item within a scenario is a unique number; a custom item from another scenario is just a list of stats.

I don't think designers should have the right to prevent cheating. If a player can't progress in a scenario, looking at the scripts or even editing them to get past a tough spot helps both the player and the designer. The player benefits because he's able to continue playing, and the designer benefits because one more person has been able to finish his scenario.

Anyway, how would you want the password protection to be implemented: by encryption (which would make all the customised editors, which more than 50% of designers ALREADY use, completely useless for future scenario formats), or within the editor itself (which would mean that all of the customised editors would simply bypass the password check, making the password protection useless)?

The overall level is most important. Scenarios can check the amount on a single party member, but it's unlikely that many will.

Spiderweb Software has 2 employees, not counting Jeff. One of those employees is his wife. I'd say your chances aren't great.

Pay attention -- what he wants to do is check items on every single space in town. That's a lot of runs through the loop, and it's the number of instructions that's counted for the single script length limit, not the number of different instructions. It'd take forever to run anyway.

And items from other scenarios can't possibly be detected by scripts because their data isn't stored anywhere in the scenario.
