Out of curiousity, does anyone know if it's possible to end up working for Spiderweb Software without happening to be a close friend of Jeff Vogel?

Spiderweb Software has 2 employees, not counting Jeff. One of those employees is his wife. I'd say your chances aren't great.

However, if you are a good graphics artist (as in at least as good as Andrew Hunter) he may purchase the rights to graphics from you. Also, if you are good at making sound effects, he may purchase the rights to those from you. Other than that though, it's not likely.

It seems to me that since reading a couple topics on this that Jeff doesn't really want anymore employees and that he would rather do the designing and drawing of his games rather than 50 other employees. Sure, he'd put out games faster, but I think he kind of wants them with his personal touch, so to speak.

And welcome to the boards, BtW. ;)

Why don't you email him and ask? If you've got skill equal to his or greater and you live in Seattle, I'd say there's a chance.

Yeah, and I quess Jeff wants to make his own stories, wich is very neat in my opinion in contradiction to very many others opinion.

If you have a very good story or game plot send it to jeff maybe he would use it. Never know.

He probably wouldn't, because of the legality issues, or however it's said.

If you send Jeff an idea, then legally, he cannot use it unless he can prove he came up with the idea first or signs a contract with you for the rights. And he's not going to pay you royalties.

So don't send him ideas.

Though I have read alot on Spidweb about being a solo games designer by Jeff. Which sounds like he doesn't mind others making games in such a way.

So you could always take some programming classes or get a good programming book and try it yourself (wouldn't suggest being to over ambitious though). Just a thought if this is the line of work your interested in.

Well, I for one, would like to make a game sometime (even if it's very simple ones at first); I think it would be interesting. However, I don't know where to start...

If you plan on making a game, you have to learn a language. C++ is what I'm using right now but there are a lot of other (possibly better) languages out there.

If you're looking for a place to start and are on a windows system, try http://msdn.microsoft.com/

No, he won't. There was a post by Jeff a while back that said he gets lots of messages that say roughly:

"Hi, I came up with this great idea, now you go do 99% of the work and make it."

Seriously, unless you are a good programmer or a graphics or sound artist, I doubt he will be interested.

I wonder If one of my friends ever met him? He moved to seattle years ago.

By the way, how does he check his E-mail with only 2 employees? He must have thousands to read! I suppose this is why I never got a reply back from him. So sad. How long will it be until I get one, anyway?

Edit: The words, they consumed our persrercasity and ability to spell!!!

I don't live in Seattle, and in all honesty, becoming a full-time Spiderweb employee isn't quite what I want to do with my life.

I'm 18, just entering college, planning on going into computer graphics (what I really want to do is design pen and paper roleplaying and card games, but I know that's something you half to just get lucky with). I'm pretty good at comp graphics right now. Not awe inspiringly good, but good enough that whenever I play a Spiderweb game, I cringe because I could make graphics better than that. At the very least, I could do introduction screens and interface graphics. (I think that I could do a better job with many of the character images, but since they are now animated, it would probably more work than I have time to do freelance, and all the creature graphics should be done by the same guy to ensure style consistency)

Someone mentioned Jeff possibly buying the rights to certain graphics. Did they just say that cause it sounded plausible, or has Jeff actually said that?

I didn't e-mail cause I figured he probably gets these with some frequency and would either take a while or just not bother replying.

He buys all his graphics from Andrew Hunter. If you were better and less expensive, he'd probably buy your graphics. But Mr. Hunter is a really good graphics artist.

Work for Us, from the directory at the bottom of this page.

Someone kind of said this, but I'll clarify it: if you want to be 'employed' by SpidWeb, the closest you can get would be to make your own game and try and get Jeff to publish it. If it's good enough, he just might do that. But I'd suggest making the game first, then trying to get him to publish it. Otherwise, you'd just blend into all the others emailing him and wouldn't have anything to prove you were serious.

Also, for those thinking of making games but don't know a language, I'd suggest doing a test. Learn something simplier then a programming language to find out if you actually like to code things. Learn HTML or Java, then make some web pages or an applet. If you can actually stand to make these, then you could benifit from learning something harder and sinking all that time and energy into designing a game. If you don't like to code, chances are you'll never complete a full-blown program (much less a complex game) and will just waste time.

It's highly unlikely that Jeff will ever distribute any third-party game again, unless said game is deemed a sure-fire hit. By and large, he hasn't had much luck with it. SubTerra is probably the only worthwhile third-party game he has ever distributed. Most of the rest are merely forgettable, and a few (GC, Homeland) are so bad that they've become running jokes within the community.

Master Xan-Yup, I was the only one who asked about programming.

I went right ahead and went here, read the first three sections of their C++ tutorial, and have already made my first program (though, as you might expect, it is very simple, consisting of a "game" where you enter a number between 1 and 1000 and it tells you higher or lower until you guess right). Don't expect great things from me, though. ;)

No, you could still say I don't know the language though, just very basic parts of it e.g. int main(). :D

The person who started the topic has already made it quite clear that he does not program games and has no intention of doing so, nor does he want to become a Spiderweb employee.

If Raemon can make better graphics for Spiderweb and Jeff is interested, great. It's the kind of thing that I'm sure Jeff is always looking for, and if the price is right, he doesn't have much to lose.

I approached Vogel back in the day about releasing a sort of 1930's Fallout-ish game that I was working on, under the working title of MobWars. Never got completed; got devoured in a larger project as my games so often do. Anyway, he was totally open to the idea. I mean, it's not like it costs him much; SW's costs can be recouped with the few copies sold before people realize the game is crap, and nobody holds the crappiness against the company itself.

Of course, I'd never let Vogel put his grubby hands on anything I make anymore.
