Ahem... Anyway, The Creator was the first to release a scenario with readable books. Simply give each book a different special class, and create a node chain checking for each special class sequentially. When it finds an item in the player's inventory that has that special class, have it display the text of the book or description or summary of what it says or whatever.
Implementing readable books sucks nodes if you have too many books though. So don't include too many.

You forgot the important part -- make the books Tools, and check only for EQUIPPED items with each special class. That way the player can simply equip the book he wants to read.

In the case of the first 90 graphics (hills, mountains, water, etc), you have to paint the entire scenario BEFORE you change the graphics. Otherwise the auto-change-terrain feature messes up.

I think that gate's *meant* to shut, and there's a secret passage. You shouldn't have left town.

Oh well. Isn't there a "Return Party to Start" option in the editor?

Towns are built from the centre out. Plan yours the same way. Stick important buildings like the town hall and general store right in the middle of the town, and then make other buildings around them.

It's always been Monroe, as far as I know. XK might have misremembered or typoed.

Well, what do you know. I was right. Martin's Concise Japanese Dictionary says "midori" means "green".

First thing you need is an account with a web hosting service. Go to www.geocities.com or somewhere similar and follow the instructions.

I've seen the word Midori in a lot of places. I believe it's the Japanese word for "green". It's also an alcoholic beverage.

The order you're meant to read them is the same order in which the sentences appear in a book on the previous floor. (It would have been nice if that book had been an item you could take with you. Oh well.)

I used to play FPSes, a long time ago, but I'm very left-brained; I suck at spatial reasoning and I'm not very good at multitasking. When technology improved and suddenly FPSes had you looking up, down and sideways while running through mazes in three dimensions, I basically gave up on the genre.

Eh. I've fixed a couple of other bugs anyway so I may as well release 1.1.1.

EDIT: 1.1.1 released. Same download location as before. The changes are really trivial, so if you already have 1.1 you don't need to redownload.

For the most part, I basically play only 2 genres of game: 2D platformers and RPGs. I expect very, very different things from each genre. When I'm not in the mood to read a lot of text, I play a platformer. When I'm not in the mood for real-time combat, I play an RPG.

As far as I'm concerned, the RPG genre just doesn't do dungeon slogs in a very interesting way, and so they shouldn't be the main attraction. A reasonable amount of well-balanced tactical combat is one thing; plowing through hundreds of identical enemies in a way that tests only patience rather than skill is quite another, and one I can do without.

We have a theory about that. Whoever Midori was, Jeff must really hate her now; she's also a lich in a previous E/A game.

Yes, I think those are the original graphics. Apparently Jeff Vogel's first wife made them.

Roots version 1.1 uploaded. If you downloaded the old version, you should probably redownload; this is a significant change. (The old version is 100% playable, though.) The change only affects a point near the end, so if you're not at the final battle yet you don't need to start over.

There was a small error in the savefile provided with the Windows version of Roots. A fixed version has been uploaded. If you already downloaded the previous version, the error can be fixed by using the Character Editor to remove Sleep Cloud from Dirac's spell list (or just by not casting Sleep Cloud).

Most of the time is taken in querying servers. Broadband doesn't make that significantly faster.

Possibly. The price of dialup is also going down, meaning that a lot of people who previously couldn't afford internet access at all will be taking up dialup.
