Hmmm. I could be wrong, but it seems like I found another route North of Fort Emerald (after I patched to v1.0.1) and got the box BEFORE meeting Houghton at The Castle and when I got there he was killed off before some quest dealing with Almaria. Does anyone else remember another route North of Ft. E. with v 1.0.1? I remember just traveling around where ever my sword led and found myself up there somehow. This wasn't a bug, I just hadn't talked to Houghton before wandering.

No they won't vanish and (heh) no one steals them either...

EDIT: It seems as though some items I was storing on ground, (specifically items that I "won" in the Tests/Trials and wanted to save as trophies) in room across from Dining Hall in Fort Monastery, did vanish with time. Not 100% sure. However, items placed in jars, barrels, boxes and such have never gone away.

I like to use jars, barrels, and boxes. They don't leave any "ground clutter" and there are some handy ones in Appelo's store in Fort Monastery and A table looking thing (across from book) and a jar just inside the gate) in NW Fort Avernum Portal/Transport area.

If you do max out your coins (30000) it's real handy to store stuff at Appelo's (jar and barrel) cause if you run low on coins (like with the trainer in Bargha, he takes up to maybe 110000 coins if you wanted to train your whole party!) you can pull items from stash and sell them to her and zip right back to see him. Very handy.

On the topic of shades. I rarely use them. They've been helpful in some situations though. I have had them get in the way and block party's exit and had to kill them. (is there a way to un-summon? I may have missed it)

Anyhow, if nothing else it's something to spend coins training on later in game when you have lots of loot and coins.

What do you think of A4 in Avernum 4

I really liked it. I've tried the demos for Geneforge 1, 2, 3, and dabbled with Avernums earlier renditions demos as well. By the time I got to Avernum 4 I loved it! Instant addiction. I like the way the game controls and play were better.
I have to admit that it could be more open ended. But hey, I've played it through 2 times and am nearly finished with a third and about 1/3 through a 4th. (And yes, I am using an editor on later replays. I want to get all completable quests done, all 6 tests (the Book of Answers calls them "Trials".) So basically it's my favorite and am looking forward to A5.

I've had this kind of thing happen with summoned shades or other NPC's getting in the way. Usually if I move far enough away they move.

Using "backtostart" and transport back to Bargha may solve. You've probably killed them by now.

Maybe if you go south to Erika's they'll be gone when you get back. They are supposed to run off ahead to wait for you I believe.

Not a problem. Will send to you via private mail. I'm hoping for more input and questions and to do a revamp of what is available now.

Thanks!

I ran into this bigtime. Reading the thread "Dorikas" I started 3 weeks ago should answer this question. If that doesn't, let me know and I'll send you a private message to avoid major public spoilers.

Just a quick hint. Fort Saffron Bandits and Levitt at the Castle. If you haven't found what you needed at FS then Levitt won't give you the quest telling you where to look for Dorikas, and nothing will open. Especially if you aren't in the right place.

On the right of your screen are buttons for maps, help, combat/peace, etc. The 4th down (3rd up) is "Edit Your Party". Check the characters stats (upper right) with one equipted, then the other and note changes to the over all, and individual stats. This should help with this decision. Maybe pass one along to another party member who is less armed.

As for the other questions hit the "?" for instructions. Usually waiting till your strong/armed well enough is the way to deal with early 'uber' bad guys.

Where can I get more piercing crystals?

I've bought one from Jen in Grindstone, then found her other two in the basement.

Is there any particular quest that I can get it on? Or anybody else in particular? I've come across maybe 5-6 this whole time and have used them all. I'm trying to finish the Mertis Spiral but need ONE more to get to where I presume the ending is.

Is there any other quest I can do to get either the Dispel Barrier or piercing crystals?
Corrin is in the inn in Mertis and wants you to tell her the location of the Honeycomb bandits. (they are in SW of Honeycomb) Doing so gets you 3 emeralds, 2 rubies, and a piercing crystal.

While in the Honeycomb, to the SW has burning bushes. There are some icy shades nearby the SW corner who are guarding a piercing crystal, other crystals, and an icy geode.

After you find Sleater the hermit mage go to clear his way to the Dragons Lair. (NE,N) After completing, go back and tell Sleater of your success. Xandros the rogue, a mage-bandit is nearby. Kill him and his clan. Blind skunkworms are northeast of Xandros, and have a number of crystals nearby. Kill them and take their stuff to get one more piercing crystal.

Just some alternative places to get piercing crystals west of Mertis. Getting the spell is the best.

According to The Book of Answers (A4's Hint Book) the 3rd Trial/Test (of 6) is Northeast of Fort Dranlon and you fight the Trial Automaton.

The above sounds more like the 4th trial/test in the Great Cave Southwest of Almaria?

Anyhow, according to the BoA there are 6 and they should be completed in order?!?

Schrodingers walkthrough also says the 3rd Trial/Test is Northeast of Fort Dranlon and you fight a Trial Automaton with magic only, weapons make it daze you.

Current (July 3) A4 Editor Choices, Items, Skills And Statistics

Note: The numbers for choices used here will change when one or more choices
are used. The lists below will use the numbers and descriptions from a fresh
list of choices. Exiting and resuming talk mode will make the numbers and
descriptions coincide again. Refer to the descriptions when the numbers change.

1. Could I get some food?

Same as original. 2 choices: Mushrooms and Bread at 2 coins each.

2. Give my party the statistics and experience of great Adventurers of renown.

Using once gives all human members Level 12 (less with Slithzerikai, 10) and all
skills and strength go up by 6 till maxed at 30 after 5 uses (levels 36/32). You
Can do this 19 times till max Levels 55/52 are reached (not recommended as you'd be
invulnerable). The only way to increase certain skills and strength above 30 is
with items. (See #3) Each use increases Experience points, Skill points, Spell
Energy, and Health. Stay at about 3 to 5 uses so you can gain higher levels as you
play and still be injured, fatigued. Experiment to find the increase that fits your needs.
(Inspired by Hawk Kings A4 edit.)

3. Give us a selection of powerful weapons, armor, potions, and scrolls. We have
made room for it all.

Use once and experiment till you're happy with how you are outfitted, then store
or sell the excess to make room for other items. If you want more of anything you
can select this again. Extra items will be dropped on ground. Don't let this build
up too much without storing or selling excess. Selling will actually make excess
go away completely. (Your coins will never exceed 30000.)

Items included are:
2 Drakeskin Bracers, 2 Blessed Bracers, 4 Eyebeast Chitin, 4 Gazerskin Sandals,
4 Girdle of Might, 4 Blessed Armor Band, 4 Gloves of the Hammer, 4 Robe of the
Magi, 2 Demonslayer, 4 Infernal Helm, 4 Avenger's Ring, 4 Crystalline Aegis, 4
Infernal Shroud, 4 Lightning Girdle, 4 Radiant Vambraces, 2 Gold Necklace, 2
Runed Jade Necklace, 2 Hero's Necklace, 4 Talisman of Might, 2 Blessed Spear, 4
Cryos Spear, 2 Jade Halberd, 2 Slith Bloodspear, 4 Incantor's Ring, 2 Icedrake
Vambraces, 2 Acid-Etched Legs, 2 Cap of Thoughts, 2 Crystalline Plate, 2 Cap of
Farsight, 2 Basher's Helm, 2 Ruby Chain, 1 Mica-Flecked Chain, 1 Opal Chain, 2
Explorer's Ring, 2 Ebony Bow, 2 Eliavri's Bow, 4 Magus Vest, 2 Flaming Sword,
4 Radiant Shortblade, 2 Venomous Blade, 4 Heartstriker Bow, 5 Healing Elixir,
5 Curing Potion, 5 Energy Potion, 5 Speed Elixir, 5 Armor Elixir, 5 Restoration
Elixir, 5 Invulnerable Elixir, 5 Scroll - Group Heal, 5 Scroll - Group Haste,
5 Scroll - Mass Bless, 5 Scroll - Mass Shield, 5 Scroll - Ice Bolt, 5 Scroll -
Lightning, 5 Scroll - Control Foe, 5 Scroll - Acid Shower, 5 Scroll - Madness

4. Fill my purse with coins.

Fills your purse with 30000 coins. Can be used as often as liked, 30000 is max.

5. Give me a Quest Kit of items likely to be needed to speedily fill requests.
My pack is empty so I can see and store these items separate from all else...

Should be used with main character's pack empty. Gives you items for quests
and construction to speed replays. Should only be used once as you won't need
all of this for other things and you'll find much of it as you travel anyhow.
(Based on Schrodinger's Walkthrough "hang on to and construction materials".)

Items included are:
1 Gold Necklace, 1 Platinum Ring, 2 Stick, 20 Wine, 20 Bag of meal, 8 Research
Notes, 8 Stolen Book, 2 Vahnatai Cloak, 3 Fine Waveblades, 1 Shackles, 3 Curing
Elixir, 1 Mortar and Pestle, 3 Fine Leather, 1 Towel, 1 Pipe, 1 Tongs, 1
pincers, 1 Hammer, 1 Graymold, 4 Gremlin Wine, 7 Glowing Basalt, 7 Icy Geode,
7 Swamp Nodule, 2 Eyestalks, 15 Chitrach Claw

6. Give me the maximum amount of Wisdom Crystals, Knowledge Brews and Elixirs,
and 20 Energy Elixirs. I'll spread them among the party and/or store them before
getting more.

This can be tricky, but really handy. You can only stack 65 Wisdom Crystals,
Knowledge Brews and 27 Knowledge Elixirs before the value goes negative. If you
have each member of your party carry the max, and 20 Energy Elixirs you can
restore all your coins 3 or 4 times in the field, and the Energy Elixirs can be
shared, or transferred to the lead character to restore his/her Spell Energy.
They are very light weight, high value, and can be sold nearly anywhere that
you need coins without leaving area. They can be stored in large quantities in
jars, boxes, the ground, etc. without risk of overstacking. If you accidentally
over stack a member just use extras until you get back to 65 Wisdom Crystals or
Knowledge Brews and 27 Knowledge Elixirs.

7. Give me herbs, graymold, mandrake, Crystals, Metals, Leather, Jewels, just
use your best judgement.

Can be used as often as liked, but more than once? Why?

This will give you the following items:
15 Healing Herbs, 15 Spiritual Herbs, 15 Energetic Herbs, 15 Graymold, 15
Mandrake Root, 2 Emerald, 4 Ruby, 7 Fine Leather, 5 Focusing Crystal, 7
Fine Steel, 7 Piercing Crystal, and 8 Bar of Iron.

Check it out... I'll be glad to accommodate reasonable requests for items as much as possible, even if I have to send some as private messages. Have fun! Let me know!

P.S. If you don't like editors please don't flame me! This is for people who do and may want to increase ease of replayability. If you don't like specific things about it, let me know and suggest solutions. Thanks!

EDIT: Links for A4editor.zip installer, Restore.zip uninstaller, and instructional README.zip text files are now available for your convenience. See Links below.

Cobbled together another A4 Editor that some may find interesting. It's script based (not true "stand alone") but it has some pretty cool features. It includes a CLEAN TESTER save game that allows you to try it out and see if, how you may want to use it. (save game writes to # 10 (bottom left) slot.) The editor is self documenting and the text files included have descriptions, a complete list of what each choice does and complete list of items.

I'm open to suggestions on how to improve the selections. I wrote this mainly to give me choices I couldn't find elsewhere. And because I wanted to be able to play game faster in new games when I wanted to go back and finish quests or redo something different in a new game. I can't stand to go through all the process of a quest just to have the character killed before I can complete it, and be too far into the game since last save game!

The abilities, items in this editor lean heavily toward Soldier, Sorcerer/Mage, Priest, and Archer skills. But has several choices helpful for other characters. Also, can increase carry weight significantly.

It's very easy to download and install. If extracted from the Avernum 4 install folder it automatically installs the test game and Editor Script and backs up the original script for you...

"Alorael" said it worked on Mac. I used my PCs XP and Win98SE no probs.

I've tested it extensively from new games to using it with games already in progress, all the way to completion with no bugs. You can leave it installed and use any, all, or none of it's features. The entry point is Bodrie in the Dining Hall at Fort Monastery. The dialog is modified to flow into the game and even explains Bodries amazing resources.

A4 Editor Menu Choices:

1. Could I get some food?

Same as original. 2 choices: Mushrooms, and Bread at 2 coins each.

2. Give my party the statistics and experience of great Adventurers of renown.
(inspired by Hawk King)*

3. Give us a selection of powerful weapons, armor, potions, and scrolls. We have
made room for it all.

4. Fill my purse with coins.

5. Give me a Quest Kit of items likely to be needed to speedily fill requests.
My pack is empty so I can see and store these items separate from all else...

6. Give me the maximum amount of Wisdom Crystals, Knowledge Brews and Elixirs,
and 20 Energy Elixirs. I'll spread them among the party and/or store them before
getting more.

7. Give me herbs, graymold, mandrake, Crystals, Metals, Leather, Jewels, just
use your best judgement.

Please read the text files _README1.txt, _EditMenu.txt, and _StatsItems.txt before extracting from A4 install folder. They will be extracted to Avernum 4 folder and will group together with "underscore" as first character of file name for easy access reference.

Or were you suggesting that as a new feature in A5 Options? Background colors customizing?

Yet another thought about Options menu in A5:

How about brightness/contrast adjustability that effects game only.

I've seen this feature before but can't remember where, or what they called it.

I realize Avernum is an underground civilization and many areas are pretty dark, but I usually keep my monitor set so it's not glaring in my face and pushing the hardware.

However, since becoming totally addicted to A4 I've changed my monitor settings to improve visability and just let everything else I do on that machine be kinda bright. It spends most of it's time (and mine) in Avernum anyhow.

Can brightness, "light level", whatever, be adjustable in options menu in A5 ?

I would really love it if maybe walls could be see-through if there's a character or monster behind it. So many times I've tried ending combat or thinking I was safe because some tiny monster was hidden behind a pillar or a wall.

Many times the enemy is behind a wall with openings for archers, which allows you to hit them as well. Or they are hiding from you or to ambush you. And a good defense an enemy can use is a tight spot, well defended by environment, to make it hard for you to attack due to party's varied skills, weapons, spells, visability and range.

The "cheat" (SHIFT d) showmeall (ENTER) is guiltless (for me) since this is a sword and sorcery fantasy adventure game and any or all of your Adventurer Party has Mage, Priest, Warrior skills which imply detecting enemies out of sight or at a distance (techno or mystical).

The sci-fi touch in G3 (genetic manipulation) and the Empire in A4 with Matter Transporter tech, tools and such, is really slick. "Cheats" like *showmeall* and *backtostart* are indispensable tools (to me). And *dbugkill* doesn't seem to apply to A4 but could be handy in A5 for replays. (As in speeding up new games if you wanted to clean up quests and errors from earlier games.)

This game has incredible drop and store capacity. But not unlimited.
Have you tried putting the cursor over area your party disappeared in and see if the characters highlight? If character highlights then I doubt there is a bug. Just a huge pile of "Hoard" and you reached/maxed display capacity. You also said you could still move around.
This game is pretty much idiot proof (I speak with authority as I've learned from idiot experience *grin*). You could try the "Cheat" code *shift D* backtostart *ENTER* (which cured a display problem I had due to a loose hard drive cable that messed up my save games) and return to area and see if it's cured.
Maybe spread your hoard around if it's (alleged bug) still there and see if it goes away.
Exceeding max physical capacity isn't a bug.
You may be able to "get/grab" enough items and store them somewhere else and not lose anything of your "hoard".
I have stored 100's of items in game. I use jars, barrels, boxes, cabinets, the ground, etc. I know for sure I've stored several 100's of valuable items in Forts Monastery and Avernum each with no problem.
Stackable items may not count in this perspective (i.e. 65 Knowledge Brews may count as 1 for storage/display purposes).
However. Debris like trash, bones, skulls, broken pots, etc. take space and can't be "stacked".

So THAT's how I finished that quest and never found an "eyebeast or gazer"). There are at least 2 with eyestalks to harvest in other areas that do look like what you expect.

It's kinda weird, since you see the name and think it should be an Eyebeast or something, but that's intentional. I don't think we've seen Gazer Beasts in any of the previous games; just Eyebeasts and Gazers.

I recommend saving the game before entering the ruins and using another save file as you go through it.
If you pull lever and open gate in SE of Dorikas area you can re-enter from the side of the river opposite Erika's. You can get to the hatch from Blosk by going W then all the way S. Or NW then W then S from Spire Fortress if you want to go back and loot and you opened the gate (and left it open). The Rune at Erica's does quit working after a restart. Loot to your hearts content from the other entrance.

Yay! I finally got to Dorikas! Went back to my other pre-kill Rentar save games and fully completed them! I'm embarassed to say what I missed in the cells at Fort Saffron that held up Levitt from giving the Erika's Ruins Quest. (Look hard enough and you'll find it!)

All I need now is Avernum 5!!!!

Quoting Croikle:
All I can think of is that the Fort Monastery script has been changed to give you 4000 instead. Have you messed with any of the scripts, or installed a script-based editor/cheat? In my version, talknode 93 in z60monasterdlg.txt has code
code:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

change_coins(num_of_item(262) * 20);
take_num_of_item(262,num_of_item(262));

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that 20 happens to be 4000 instead, you might want to change it back. Make sure you back up the scripts folder before you start changing it, though, just in case something goes wrong.

Actually as of 12/25/05 till today it's * 2000 (vice 4000 instead of * 20 per iron bar (item262)) and the next line is missing causing it to not take item from party and when it hits 30000 it goes to zero coins. You can fix Hawk Kings Dawdy prob by adding the second line as quoted above (this is from original script). You could even leave the * 2000 alone and it will simply stop at 30000 coins. The Dawdy quest is good because if you aren't using an editor he pays more than anyone in the game at 20 (vice 7) coins and iron bars are fairly plentiful (though heavy). I also have wondered why, other than a better sell price, and ability to get more coins early in game, this quest is there as it appears you can't complete it. The above reasons are enough to have it though. After you're farther into the game you'll just skip ol' Dawdy anyhow.

Note: It would be best to copy and paste from original to correct count and replace missing line. Don't really need the 20 to be 2000 as Bodrie will fill your purse to 30000 for the asking if you are using Hawk Kings A4 editor.

P.S. Can the name Dowdy in this thread be changed from Dowdy to Dawdy?

Good point. I have 3mb cable and I tend to forget (till broadband goes down and I have to use backup dialup ISP). Broadband isn't readily available in way too many areas and fanbase is worldwide.
Very good point.
Perhaps A5 could stay in the 20mb range and the talking sound package and cost could be an optional upgrade with second download and additional cost. With a discount when purchased together (as with the Hint Book) and could be on cd (a few days snailmail) as well as downloadable.
And could be toggled on and off in Options?
(Heh... did I use the "and" word enough?)

How about NPC's that talk instead of you reading their comments?
I guess your responses would still be numeric choices of reply.
Also the remarks they make before you click on them could be audible as well.
I realize this would increase production costs but I'd be willing to pay more for features like that.
I'm going to buy A5 regardless. I have truly enjoyed A4. The price is right also. Plenty of bang for your buck!
Half the cost of ES4 without having to do major upgrades to run it.
Hmmm. Maybe this suggestion isn't so good after all.

How about customizable hotkeys in Options? F3 Quick Save is next to F4 Load Quick save. Sometimes I'd get caught up in the heat of battle and hit F3 as often as possible and hit F4 by accident and lost ground. I did a MacGyver, took a matchbox bottom, made a cut out and used duct tape as a hinge so F4 is covered and I can flip it open to hit F4. Being able to make, say F9 the quicksave load key would be cool!

Anyhow, Thanks for the help and welcome!!! This is a great forum and if I'm not mistaken, you're in the credits as a beta tester. Cool...
