quote:Wow, your machines sound almost human! :P If you wrote that as a razz because you thought I came across as smug, I was just happy. XP till 2014 and nothing to buy! Woo hoo! :D P.S. It upgraded to SP3 smoothly, but reset everything to defaults. So... For a week now I keep finding somnething to tweak back. Later... microphage -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. quote:I checked out your aesthetic reasons. Somehow I can see you actually doing that. Be sure and let us know when you get Windows... Not sure if I'll celebrate out and about or maybe lock myself in that vintage 1960's bomb shelter I found. It will be a world shaking event of Biblical proportions for sure! quote:Heh. The newest and fanciest would be Vista 64 Corporate or some such. I think XP and 2000 came out late 90's early 00's. I don't blame you for sticking with 2k. I'm glad these games run on it. Most apps I've seen with 2k were work oriented. It took me forever to fully switch from the 95 kernal and retire my 98SE machine and go totally XP. Heh, XP's what, 8 years old now. 7 anyhow. It's always nice to see who some of the Windows users are. The Mac people can't relate to why we get so excited months after they started yawning. We are finally getting to play the latest SpidWeb Release so we're still in new release party mode... It's our turn now! :P Just for the record everyone, you can get XP SP2 Update versions new on Ebay for $50-$70 that work with 95, 98, 98SE ME but I don't know about NT or 2000. Will have to research that. You can use the upgrade for a full, from scratch install if you like, just gotta have some old disk for it to sniff first. ALSO. I thought this 70mb SP3 was it. They are going to release a 570mb SP3 next month. I suppose that's the full official XP SP3 full install version size. microphage -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. quote:Kids huh? CP/M, Basic, DOS 2?, green and amber mono screens with the burn in in the upper left corner where the prompt lived. I gotta tell ya though, this sp3 is an improvement. And I believe if your machine will run 2000 it will run XP. Geez, Windows 3.0, then 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, now XP SP3. Still wish I had a true, stable, and comatible 64bit OS. Sigh. :P -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! Posts: 181 | Registered: Monday, June 12 2006 07:00 |

quote:Absolutely! XP SP1 hasn't been supported since 2006 so you are at risk. SP2 and SP3 are both free updates. Not sure if you have to do SP2 from SP1 before you can update to SP3 but you should really do it. SP3 has over 1000 fixes beyond SP's 1 & 2 and some backported features from Vista that are nice. Do SP2 & SP3 and you're covered till 2014 on criticle updates. I may still be using XP then as it's probably the most stable and fast OS MS has to date. Oh yeah, SP3 makes your computer faster. Booting, loading progs and such. microphage -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! Don't remember that one. I remember Vampirella and Tales From the Crypt, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and just the old DC Marvel stuff otherwise. MicroSoft XP SP3 RC2 (final) from Windows Update released Apr 21 2008. I've updated both my XP machines smooth as silk. You can wait till the 29th and get it as a critical update. This is NOT the much publicized "leak" of last week. This is from MS Windows Update and is the real thing. If you want to find it now yourself go to search engine www.altavista.com type "XP SP3" with the quotes, and it'll be about hit number 15. DailyApps.net. I did have to disable my Panda Internet Security on one machine, but not the other, to get the update done. Takes about 5 -10 minutes. And in other related news, MS will be supporting XP through April of 2014. SP3 that is. SP2 will not be supported after April 2009. microphage -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. Lots of it as brown bag school lunch meat growing up. Actually tastes pretty good sliced as thin as possible and fried till browned and fat poured off. Bad for your health. Not heart friendly. Still tasty fried on a bun or bread with lettuce, tomato and sauce like BBQ sauce. But then so is bacon and it's far better tasting. I have not bought any in last 3 decades or so. Will eat if served as a guest as long as it's fried, fried, fried. Heavily nuked in microwave. -------------------- The point of fighting is to win. quote:Well, I was frustrated because I'd gotten public warning posts about multi-posting. The UBB wouldn't allow me to delete any errors I made, then corrected. Made peace with all concerned. Then there was a flurry of posts reflecting UBB's problems and no cure. I saw something interesting when I logged in today. At the top of the page it said: "If You Get Errors When Trying To Make a New Account - We have been having some trouble with the board software. E-Mail Us and let us know if you are having problems, and we will fix it. We plan to upgrade the board software this year." I have no idea if my "rant" had a part in this. However. If it did then it was worth the loss of 1 star of karma. P.S. If you go below 5 stars once is 4 as high as it will ever be again? microphage -------------------- Aide: (tugging at General's pant leg from ground..) "Sir! Please get down!" General: "What!?! Again, thanks. Your reply and info update is much appreciated. I was under the impression that SS was based in WA. Doesn't matter really. I deserved the FYT. Thank you both for your candor and explanations. I really like this place. Plan to be around a while. Thanks again... Posts: 181 | Registered: Monday, June 12 2006 07:00 |

quote:OK. I apparently still don't get it. I felt the posts I made were definately "stand alone" this time. I can combine the 2 different posts into 1 and still have a post I'll need to fill as it seems that normal board maintenance is not possible here. If I combine them I'll still leave an empty post. Please explain this to me, publicly and in detail what I'm doing wrong, and why normal BBS maintenance is so "not doable". Isn't it time to upgrade to something that works? Just dump it all if you have to and get it right. Encourage members to re-post. Make a downloadable archive zip for old news. Something besides all this nipping at my heels, and anyone else who rocks the boat (which oddly seems to be me). I lived in the WA, OR area for 3 years. It truly is "God's Country". I recognize a "Bilbo Bagins Blend" attitude when I see one. Thankfully I grew out of it. Have you? Am I a personal problem? You don't want me here? All it takes is an email, post, or snailmail message from spidweb and I'm gone. You and *i have publicly rebuked me, I insist on a public accounting. Last time I checked that is still my right in the Bill of Rights as a US citizen. Of course you could just ban me. Take the easy way out and still have a crap forum. Format, reinstall, your BBS is corrupt. Do the right thing. If you have the stones. Thank you. I eagerly await your response. What a *bleeping* *censored* mess. I thought Aran was SysOp. How many 70's people sold out to become The Establishment they so despised and rebelled against. Maybe it's revolution time again... quote:And then submit. You're right. Change. The tendency to complain, then ultimately submit is the goal of all behavior modification agenda's, slackers, and power abusers. Just don't throw it at the sheep too fast. It'll go down smooth. It's like cooking a frog. Drop it in boiling water and it jumps out of the pot. Turn up the heat slowly and that sucker's boiled. Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert A Heinlien, Larry Niven, Robert L Forward. Greg Bear, Orson Scott Card, gosh, where do you draw a line? Not to mention Steven R Donaldson, and J.R.R. Tolkien... Impossible for me to make a shortlist. Didn't know till I saw it here that Clarke had passed. Now he sees what we've yet to perceive. Thanks for all the wonder and time well spent Sir Clarke. quote:Finally played around with the appearance effects. Fun! I could use some help with another situation. Anytime I use a haste or speed spell my PC never gets a turn in battle. It's fine for crossing friendly turf, but go into combat and you have to use your creations to fight till you're back at peace. It won't let you pick up or change weaps or anything. You'd probably need the latest version of my editor to see what I'm talking about. http://www.freewebs.com/microphage/GF4Editor.zip I've made some extensive further changes that reduce some of the stats so that all resistences are between about 106 and 150, and armor is about 250 and up depending on what items you equip. Anyhow, I like where it's at now, just can't get a handle on the 1 problem. Thanks! Edit: Typo.
