In the fortress Skaggerak (?), if you go north to that throne, King Micah's image mentions the ritual. If you go south, then you get into the fight first. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I compared the experience after doing 3 sections and the difference was almost nothing. Having one extra creation doesn't make much difference, but it helps if it starts out strong enough that you don't need to up grade it. quote:Yeah, but a shaper is supposed to use creations. If I wanted to fight all the time without them then I would just run an agent. The extra starting dexterity and intelligence make it easier than a guardian that can barely use magic to buff up himself. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There is always a slight probability since new species are being discovered every year, especially in remote places. Any survivors from the dinosaur era will probably be small, but there are still rumors out of Africa of the big one. Good luck hunting and bring it back alive like Professor Challenger in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. It's not his fault they left the window open. I killed everyone in the Refuge, and found you need to augment the party if you don't want anyone to die when they go hostile. Maybe attacking first instead of triggering them by going into a locked room will work. There is an iron sword in a back room and some pods. Nothing special unless you are running a guardian. I guess I came out ahead on money for burning 2 essence pods. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

quote:Since I probably spent the most years of anyone here learning laser theory and using them, I can say that there isn't anything new that you can do with the optics of a laser. The only thing new is the source for the light. The technology is already fairly basic for a nitrogen gas laser that you can make yourself for under $100 (US). Solid state lasers that you can buy from Radio Shack, etc. require some major technology to produce the semiconductor material without contamination that shortens the lifetime. Free electron lasers and others that don't use population inversions are beyond simple. The major problems is the material that will produce the light (gas or solid). You need to find one that will have a decay transition with a low probabilty in order for a population inversion to occur. This will determine the wavelength of the laser. Then you need to find a way to pump in energy to create the inversion. The first working laser used an artificially created ruby rod for the material and a white light flash lamp to pump the ruby's atoms into an excited state to give bursts of light. Mirrors then bounced the light back and forth to get a coherent output. For the record it was done without the permission of the guy's company (Hughes) because they didn't want him wasting time. Then when it worked they came in to claim credit for it being done there. The two researchers Townes and Gould that came up with the idea of a laser never developed a working one. Although Gould has patents on most of the optics that they use. Helium-neon gas lasers follow a strict set of mathematical formulae to determine the size of the tube used. There are several papers explaining how to calculate what will happen. Carbon dioxide lasers have to be tuned to get which of several wavelengths will be used. Nitrogen gas are the simplest except that you have to circulate the gas to keep it running and it works only in pulsed mode. Solid state lasers work by creating a material that will have the desire wavelength. They are carefully made so only that wavelength or range will occur. Amputation as a solution for gangrene would depend upon whether the site was cauterized immediately to stop bleeding and a side effect kill the germs in the area. Also some people did use alcoholic beverages to disinfect/clean wounds. In medival times casualties among the lower classes was higher than the nobles who could be ransomed back for money. So it paid to disarm and capture/surrender instead of fight to the bitter end. Also armor shifted from absorbing blows to deflecting them so there would be less damage in combat. You didn't have to rely on just a shield to deflect the blow. Padding beneath the armor would help to absorb the blow's force to help withstand damage. That's why the emphasis shifted to slipping a sword's point into a joint and less on trading blows. It became less effective to batter an enemy in hopes of penetrating armor or breaking a bone. Today's Wall Street Journal has a review of Parallels Desktop. The Windows emulator currently doesn't support 3D graphics, but it should be upgraded in the next version for gamers. Parallels supports Windows going back to version 3.1, Linux, and OS/2. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Following my dissertation advisor's advice if you want people to reply put out a statement that people will want to corrrect. I'm wondering how far into the game people have run shapers before making their first creation? Running a bullseye shaper allows you to delay until you are able to make a higher level creation or have several levels in a shaping skill. In GF2 I can get through 8 sections before I need a creation. The Crags and Western Drypeak Mines are too hard for a lone shaper without considerable retreating using speed pods to avoid getting swarmed. I'm trying something similar in GF3 since Alwan and Greta substitute for creations. I'm holding out until after at least the Testing Grounds where I can get an artila and concentrate my shaping skills in the magic area. This way by the time I can get vlish, I will be able to create ones with about 10 levels in magic shaping. Is it better to wait until you can't get at least one level of shaping for each level of advancement? Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Back in the old days, Ultima II which was basically fantasy had a section where you had to go into space and shoot down enough ships to qualify as an ace. I've played some paper sci-fi RPGs that could translate into computer games. quote:If you played Steve Jackson's earlier fantasy games like Melee and Wizard you see the beginnings of GURPS. If you took enough damage from a single blow past what armor could protect then you would fall down if you were still alive. The stronger the character past a breakpoint the more damage it would take. It's possible to do it realistically without being boring since the computer handles the paperwork. Once my character got possessed and attacked the other fighter. as I rolled my damage I grumbled at rolling minimum. The other fighter survived and swung back with a point below his maximum. I looked and said still standing and got ready to wear him down. The guy playing a mage was turning pale (and that's not easy for an oriental) as he calculated how the two blows would have killed him. He used a spell before we killed each other and left him with no shields on the way back to town. So if you hack the system you can get around restrictions. The forums are never quiet, but they do have their slow days. Can't wait to see what happens when the mages finish bringing back the rest and start hunting the thing. Any chance that the pursuit will go into the hidden geneforge forums? Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Sometimes it's easier to kill a non-hostile NPC by going through the dialog options and then finish and go into attack mode to get first strike. Some dialog options where you say you will kill it cause you to get killed when they strike first. I didn't think about killing that mage. I did kill them in the Refuge after watching Greta die when I was exploring the back rooms. I found augmenting the party helps you survive long enough. In GF1 there are a few bodies left over from the evacuation/return period. The first one is found in the second area. Agents are picked for their abilities to function on their own and think out a solution. Guardians are brawn and not much brains, since they have lower starting intelligence and like Alwan prefer to take orders. Shapers are the researchers and go in groups of creations and guardian bodyguards. Agents can get by without the cannisters since they mostly just give them power a little earlier. The searer spell in GF3 is the first one. An extra die of damage doesn't make a difference. In GF2 the cannisters are a little more helpful like strength and vlish. The test northwest of Cotra is in the chitrach tunnels. The easiest access is from the building east of Fort Dranlon. In the tunnels go north into the next map section. Follow the tunnel until it splits into 6 directions. You are coming from the southeast. East leads to arachnea. Northeast eventually leads to the 3rd test. Southwest goes to the south map section. The other two ways go to spider types. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

For torment I still prefer agent for the multiple attacks of essence orbs. I did try guardian for the first dozen zones and could see playing it out as a missle guardian. Maybe when I finish GF3. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Yeah, I grew up in Hyde Park. Is there a hotel left there that the U of C hasn't bought for student housing? I spent most of my time at the Museum of Science and Industry since it was less than a half mile from my home. You came too late to see the anti-ballistic missle base they used to have along Lake Michigan to defend Chicago from the Soviet Union. After the SALT treaty they took it down. Then I moved to Tucson and was surrounded by another one. Anyone else have something weird like that they thought grew up thinking was normal? I've kept my real name off this forum just because some people think fanatasy RPGing is evil in itself. You can never tell what will set some one off. Google has made what was once a time consuming research task so simple almost anyone can do it. They have a contest to see who can get the most secret personal information (social security numbers, accounts, etc.) using google in under an hour. Even the company officers don't like to acknowledge what they have done. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Maybe Jeff could add the soundtrack as a separate file that those that want it could download and replace the existing one in the game. That way us dial-up users could get the basic game and those that really want to have the extras could do so. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Intelligence is useful for range attacking creatures like fyora, artila, and vlish to increase the number of times they can use their attacks. When hasted they can run out during long combats. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I had trouble with the rune not working only after I killed Dorikas and was going back to finish looting. This only happened once so I'm not sure what triggered it. I recommend saving the game before entering the ruins and using another save file as you go through it. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
