Have you ever wondered whether or not the developers of UBB threw in these little bugs just to see what the users would do when they happen? I'd say "Here's to Spam", but Tyran ruined that for me. 1. Do I care about the diferences? If we are attacked, I will fight back. If provoked beyond reason afterwards, I will end the threat. 2. I will not go into a religious war, as it is a paradox. And I will never convert, unless convinced that I am wrong. 3. See #1. 4. See #1. 5. What would the point be? 5. I prefer reform in the case of social issues as such. 6. I die free. 7. Bring it. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has come up with a new form of subterfuge involving large conflagrations and jello. Less than $2000? Nice. I built a gaming and film editing machine over the summer for $600. It plays Oblivion at the preset High settings, and runs Adobe Photoshop with no issues. And, of course, I can still play old-school Exile when I so choose. :D So how soon does your father want ths computer? If he already has Internet access and can stand to wait a week for shipping, I would strongly advise that he not go to a computer store in person, and instead go online to do his research and shopping. Why? Because computer stores have salesmen, who many times get paid a commission on their sales. Meaning that the store ups the price a little to pay the salespeople, and the sales people are going to be trying to get you to buy the most expensive equipment and accessories possible without thinking about whether or not you can use them. My suggestion is to build your own. For a PC, it's always less expensive. Recommended sites: TigerDirect Newegg.com PCMall Overstock.com Some advice from an experienced builder, if he goes for a PC: NEVER buy a premade from Sony, Compaq, or HP. When Comparing Dell to Gateway, Dells generally have better performance but will generally only last until the service contract expires; Gateways have poorer performace, but generally last a lot longer. When you go shopping, ALWAYS look at consumer reviews (especially the negative points), and ALWAYS compare the actual abilities of the stuff that you're looking at. Don't let a salesman tell you something that you can have them look up. They'll get it wrong. To answer your qualifications: So what is he planning on using this for, anyway? High video and RAM requirements generally mean some sort of visual com purpose... or gaming, of course. I'm told Dual-Core is nice. Me, I'm running at Pentium 4 3.6 GHz with Hyperthreading, and it suits my purposes. Dual-Core merely can multitask better. Granted, only the more recent programs are applicable to the dual-core system. Don't know about virus protection. The McAffe firewall/ virus scan system is pretty nice, but it is also a bit of a resource hog. RAM? DDR2 or higher, if he can help it. It's not expensive. I bought 500 MB for $30. If you decide to go with a video card, I would recommend an NVidia chipset out of experience. I have a card that I got for $150, and slightly underclocked (my case is poorly ventilated), it runs Oblivion at High settings. I, personally, will not even consider investing in Vista until SP1. And at that point, I'll be getting a new computer anyway. I hope that helps... -------------------- The Silent Assassin prefers to ignore computer hardware. Unless, of course, it makes pretty color flames when it burns. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. I am a Citizen Guardian. 75% and 65%, respectively. I suppose that means that I use the laws to protect, or something like that. Self-interest is not necessarily evil. All creatures have some form of self-interest. Most people call it "motivation". Self-interest at the expense of other beings, on the other hand, is evil. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has recently discovered the wonderful use of soda cans as shrapnel. The answer, of course, is yes. Hmm... as a student of Biblical Theology, I am required by my professors and peers alike to blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah. However, in light of the metaphysical implications of blah blah blah blah blah, one can assume that man is blah blah blah. Or, I can take this the practical way. Define your terms. Being a Christian, I define evil as being anything contrary to the will of God, with good being defined by God's perfection. Therefore, mankind cannot be inherently good, nor evil. The nature of an individual man may tend toward one or the other (most times, I believe, the latter), but one cannot fairly classify a whole race as good or evil (note the modifier "fairly"). EDIT: I would think of a good punchline only after I hit the post button. -------------------- The Silent Assassin just drove off with several dozens of gallons of fushia paint and a gas-fueled high pressure water pump and nozzle system. I have a vague suspicion that I suddenly know what all of those pictures of City Hall were for... Perused the thread, felt like throwing two cents in (just two, I swear!). I have considered many issues and appraches of government for years, and have come to only one conclusion: Anarchy is not an option. Even anarchy will eventually fall into a system in which someone controls and regulates someone else. Make what you will of it. Favorite Ice Cream flavor? Butter Pecan Length of Major Sleep? My ideal REM cycle puts me at about 7 and a half hours Favorite Arcade Game? I like racing games. Favorite movie made from a cartoon? Logan has always been my favorite comic character. That said, the films have done him little justice. I'd have to go with Spider-Man. Favorite place to nap? We have a bowl chair in our room. It's very comfy. Favorite print cartoon? Calvin and Hobbes. Do you eat ice-cream during a cold weather? Yes. Favorite hour of the DAY to sleep? I don't have one? If forced, I'd say 2-3 PM. Favorite Age? Meaning what was the year of your life that you enjoyed the most. Umm... I can't boil an entire year down to a favorite, because just about everything I can immediately think of balances out the really good and the atrociously bad. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is out buying a new set of spare flippers.
