I played a magician/melee solo PC all the way through to the end for my first full beta run. Magic rocks with melee! I was able to make him very potent in both by the end, and he was phenomenally successful ultimately, but some fights were very challenging where sheer numbers would be helpful. Playing as a lonely melee tank means carefully not biting off more than you can chew in combat, knowing when to retreat, replenish, and return, and so forth. It is much more sneaky, calculated, and strategic in nature, and will probably involve much more trial and error.

There is, at minimum, one optional area in the game that will require some creations to assist or you will not be able to survive the encounter. I was forced to invest very late skill points and cash into some shaping ability so I could summon two rothgroths to lend an acrid hand. In fact, it was very difficult to get through a number of sticky and varied encounters as a singleton, and Jeff beefed some of those up subsequent to my successfully mopping them up as a singleton. They may be nigh on impossible now without help. Everything essential in the game is accomplishable unaided by creations however, and a good fun challenge.

Playing with swarms of creations is also very gratifying, and I am playing a shaper/fighter sort this time through. Keeping your lowly fyoras alive for a long time can really pay off after a while. One of the strengths of G4 is the variability of experience possible. It's a bit akin to Nethergate in that respect.

I have enjoyed it a lot. This game will do well, and should duly gratify the fans. I never even played the first three Geneforges, liking the fantasy genre so much better, but this was good game. Synergy recommends and will have plenty to comment upon, advise or tease with when it's out in the open for all to enjoy...or at least all you Mac-ky sorts for starters.

-S- is for Superb Singleton Satisfaction.

What I do clutter my shelves with:

Animation (good animation) a couple dozen perhaps.

Sci-fi (good sci-fi) this leaves about a dozen or less.

Fantasy (good fantasy) this leaves very few.

Robert DeNiro/heist movies: this accounts for a surprisingly chunky handful, Heat and Ronin being favorites.

Six spooky movies.

Several period pieces, which may or may not include Jane Austen titles.

Amelie, City of Lost Children, and Delicatessen.

Eh, I'll drop my inane xmas Ode to A4 offering from last season. At least it's on topic. My favorite poetry is quite silly. Shel Silverstein, I bow before thee.

-S-

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN EXILE (Mommy, what’s “night?”)

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the green-glowing, fungus-infested house
Not a creature was stirring, except for a mouse (a giant-sized, irritated, pustulent one at that);
Empty scabbards were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that Radiant Blades soon would be there;

Four adventurers were nestled all snug in their Geyser Inn beds,
While visions of Action Point-granting body-armor danced in their heads;
And my priest in her Magi Robe, and I in my Thought Cap,
Had just settled down for a brief Adventurer's power-nap,

When out on the stalagmites (or is it stalactites—I can never remember which) there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the (compressed mushroom meal) bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the (carbonized mushroom meal) window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the (mayor’s) sash. (Eww, gross!)

The green mushroom moonlight on the breast of the new-fallen foe (He really shouldn’t have insulted my Clover Boots like that)
Gave the lustre of mid-night to the bat droppings below,
When, what to my (slightly bloodshot from too much mushroom ale) eyes should appear,
But an oversized Geneforge boat, and eight giant domesticated lizards (full of mushroom-meal beer),

With a little old driver, so demented and sick,
I knew in a moment it must be Dead Patrick.
More rapid than Frenzied Chitrachs his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Crusher! now, Duncer! now, Lancer and Pigpen!
On, Vomit! on Stupid! on, Blunder and Blitzed-Again!
To the top of the elevationless cave! to the top of the secretless wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves (leaves, what are those?) that before dragon breath fly,
When they meet with an obstacle (like my Jade Halberd), mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the lizards they flew (I guess they’re drakes),
With the Geneforged boat full of Diamond Spray wands, and Dead Patrick too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the garbage pile
My mates lancing and skewering each pesky reptile.
As I drew my (12-33) Oozing Blade in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney Dead Patrick came like a frog, er—hellhound.

He was dressed all in Poor Fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with mushroom-hued soot;
A bundle of potions he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a Slightly Expensive™ peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they squinted! his dimples how muddy!
His cheeks were like Graymold, his nose a bit ruddy (more mushroom ale)
His droll little mouth was drawn up like an Ebony Bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as bat guano;

The stump of a mushroom he held tight in both teeth,
And the smoke encircled his head like an Icy Rain wreath;
He had a broadsword smile and a little round belly (rare ‘round here),
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of Gaseous Goo jelly.

He was listless and pale, a right sorry old Avernite,
And I laughed when I saw him, this wraith in the night;
The sink of his eye and the list of his head,
Soon gave me to know soon again he’d be dead;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his task,
And filled all the stockings with a Knowledge Brew flask,
And laying his finger full into his nose,
And giving a flick, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his Geneforge boat, to his team gave a whistle,
But they no longer harkened, as we’d carved them to gristle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he stumbled out of sight,
"Curse you Adventurers, and to all a good blight."

Primarily in response to Lenar:

The point I made and which I believe Paul was making is not that anything goes, but that the inner rule of spirit convicting in each situation within a person communing with God is the new law to follow, not outer absolute laws. Peter recoiled when the sheet of unclean animals was lowered to him in a vision, and he was instructed to eat. He refused...he couldn't accept the new liberty being offered him. If God were to lower a sheet to the average Christian today, steeped in Christian rules and traditions much like Peter was in his Jewish ones, what do you think would be on that sheet? Sexual behaviors seem the biggest stumbling block to the typical Christian today. What Christian could stomach the vision from God that what was once perceived to be unclean is not what God is actually hung up about, or what defiles a man (from the outside in.)

Sexual immorality, as Paul describes it, would be that which is in some way selfish or hurtful in the context he was addressing it. That which IS edifying is not immoral or unlawful. Two people of the same sex loving each other mutually does not strike me as inherently non-edifying. Paul spoke at great length in Romans and Hebrews about being freed from the tyranny of external law and its curse (it only condemns and has no power to change people.) I don't see Paul laying down new Christian rules and laws for Christians as many take his advisements to local churche 2000 years ago...or do you think women should shut up in churches and wear coverings on their heads today? He did give timely advice to specific churches in which at the time his suggestions may have been appropriate and edifying. Blanket applications bug me. If one is to use scripture that way, then Solomon's poetic words in Ecclesiastes are also to be applied to oneself. "It's better to be a living dog than a dead man in the grave."

You are right. All things occur in a context, but Paul spoke often enough about the degree of liberty believers are to have "in Christ' that the message is resoundingly clear to me. Children need Daddy to lay down all the rules in black and white and punish and reward accordingly. Israel under the law were in a state of spiritual childhood. When children grow up, they are given much greater freedom, and ultimately autonomy. The Christian experience under Pentecost is more of an adolescent phase of God's spiritual dealing with humanity, as I would see it. When are Christians going to grow up and put away childish things (like concerns over rituals, baptisms, doctrines, and sexuality?)

Sin means to miss the mark. I know homosexuals who show much better "Christian" love and charity than many Christians I have known. Who is missing the mark? What do you think God would have to say in evaluating such persons? Jesus reserved his scathing words for those who bind people with their religiosity (the Pharisees.) Meanwhile, he was hanging out with the street trash (and evidently, not telling them what wretched wicked sinners they were because of what they were or were not doing.)

I appreciate the tone of your comments, Lenar.

Respectfully,

-S-

All the New Testament has to say about what “laws” believers in the gospel are to be under:

Jesus:

Matt 22: 35 and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,
36 `Teacher, which is the great command in the Law?'
37 And Jesus said to him, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding--
38 this is a first and great command;
39 and the second is like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself;
40 on these--the two commands--all the law and the prophets do hang.'

Paul:

1 Cor 10:23 All things to me are lawful, but all things are not profitable; all things to me are lawful, but all things do not build up;

I see nothing remaining in New Testament gospel which seeks to absolutely label behaviors as moral or immoral. Rather we have the statememt from Paul, to whom was given the deepest insight and wisdom into the new spiritual order, that all things have become lawful/permissible to him now in his new understanding, but not all things are profitable/worthwhile/edifying. It is left up to the mature believer and the spirit of God in him or her to discern in any moment what is profitable or permissible according to the rule of loving others, rather than some outer law written in stone to instruct specific minutae of behavior.

Evidently, Christianity soon couldn’t comprehend or stomach such genuine liberty in Christ, and quickly reverted to “Judaeo-Christianity” as it is now called, which integrates Old Testament laws and rules with the message of the New Testament What we do with our physical bodies in loving or sharing with someone seems a hell of a lot less spiritually important than the attitudes of the heart which get expressed in deeds.

Heh heh heh.

Project Snowball Effect™ is coming along nicely indeed, I see. Evidently, on SW all one has to do is throw the "c" word out there once, and half a year later sit back and watch the growing legion of smitten, sycophantic suiters scrambling over each other with sickeningly saccharine sincerity to get virtual face time with a 14 year old girl, who'd much rather perforate them perpetually with pencils than bat an eyelash in their direction.

I'd be laughing more heartily if I didn't also feel just a bit ill right now.
