Measure 40 is one of my favorites for this year. It simply says that Oregon judges within the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals must represent disparate districts within the state and reside in those districts while holding office. ... Now understand that Oregon is a big state. And there is only one Supreme Court, located in Salem. Does it make sense to force judges to drive up to 8 hours a day to go to work? You can thank Kevin Mannix for this one. Incidently, the biggest contributor of Opinion on this one is R Russell Walker, who decided to send in 22 manifestos (at $500 a pop) for his Our Courts Committee. So, what do you think? Force Judges to maintain one residence and drive all the time? Perhaps they should maintain two residences? Or leave it as it was and let them live near their place of work? Perhaps some compromise should be made. Maybe judges should be originally from certain areas, but be allowed to live in Salem. -------------------- "Tyranicus is about the only one that still posts in the Nethergate Forum." —Randomizer Spiderweb Chat Room Shadow Vale - My site, home of the Spiderweb Chat Database, BoA Scenario Database, & the A1 Quest List, among other things. It is an open, non-partisan election already. Any judge can run for the Supreme Court, whether from the Steens Mountains or from the west hills of Portland. The question is, why should they continue to live there during their tenure in the court? -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

They shouldn't. This kind of plan would only work in states like Rhode Island and Deleware. It's pure foolishness at best. Especially given that the judiciary is not supposed to be representative. This is just a pointless roadblock of a policy. Do any of its backers have anti-"activist judge" agendas? —Alorael, who thinks basing it on where judges were originally from would be even worse. How long do you have to live somewhere before you're from there? What are the age cutoffs? Does it have to be only a certain number of years ago? What if you, say, spent your summers there but the rest of the year somewhere else? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Judges don't deserve an unnecessarily long commute for absolutely no reason. Dikiyoba might be in favor of herding the officials in charge of determining which high schools belong in which sports leagues onto a crowded bus for several hours a few times a week, though. You'd think that by now people would be taking advantage of new technology. Why not hold court through a video phone conference or something? Hey, if doctors can stay at home operating sophisticated surgery machinery (not sure if this is really done or if I saw it in a movie at some point), why can't judges hear cases from the comfort of their homes? -------------------- You lose. Salmon, making checkboxes that you can check only one of was very evil. Option 1 was too amusing not to check, so this measure has my support. :P -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. I still fail to comprehend the point of the law on the first place. Other than mess around with the poor judges that is. And as fun as that would be, it's just wrong. However, I did end up voting for option #1. Edit: gahhh, all the speaking in third person is killing me. In respone to Esphesos, 1)-X- wants to know which gimmick you are talking about. 2)-X- is desperate to get rid of his "New Arrival" status. He has made spammy posts, but intends to stop once the count reaches 50. 3)-X- explained this in his first post. 4)True. 5)-X- doesn't want to start pointless flamewars, he wants to start arguments of that make sense and have meaning. 6)-X- is always irritable. I hate to break it to you, -X-, but being a newbie has little to do with your post count. It has to do with how long you've been here. To prove it, I have made over 250 posts, and am still considered a newbie. Why? Because I registered just last month. Just relax and be yourself. -X- has technically been here for over a year, but newbihood has nothing to do with posts or time and everything to do with perception. Others' perception. —Alorael, who considers everyone with a gimmick a newb. Yes, every single person who posts stupid gimmicks is a worthless waste of bandwidth.
