They're all neat. I don't wanna choose. But I kinda like the sidhe woman whose name I forget in the Abandoned Hall at the beginning (and those already mentioned). Jeff got the arrogance factor just right with her.

I agree with Lady Davida, save that the Great Middle U.S. Sea will have reformed, wiping out the Midwest.

Swords or Spears? in General

In Exile, if I kept it on my computer (well, it was how I found out about Spidweb, but I like Avernum, Nethergate and Geneforge better), one each of my fighters would have a sword, a spear and a mace. Though all of them, spellcasters included, would get axes until I got something better. Nethergate characters would get swords, except for one spearcarrier per party.

In Avernum everyone gets swords, which is what I voted for.

It was occupied during 1945, by the Soviets after quite a bit of fighting (much to the dismay of the U.S. and U.K., who didn't want communists to have it). It was in May, I think, but if not in that month then somewhat before.

Maybe it's German soldiers surrendering?

Happy New Year!

Is the first one Soviets taking over Berlin, or Americans taking over Paris?

Hah! I'd donate $200 for that! ;) :P :D

Happy new year, everyone.

I think we should get back on topic.

After I got my billion, bought the island, built my mansion, hired my staff and found - not bought, found - my companions, I'd give a couple of million each* to various charities such as hurricane and tsunami relief, children protection and animal protection.

*: That is to say, each charity would get a couple of million. I don't want to volunteer my time and effort, just throw money.

Now, I'd go back and restate a certain part of what I'd do with a billion dollars, but I think my statement stands. And all 'cause of Gandalf the Green.

In addition to what I've already said, I'd buy my own private island, a mansion built into the largest hill there, and some women to populate it with me. (No men, and I'm not sorry about it.)

I will not bow before you, for I am an Atheist and you are Not God! Just for your arrogance, you will be given twenty smart Kafers!

*A horde of Kafers*, certainly much more than twenty but also certainly a multiple of twenty, arrive and attack.*

Pay off my school loans, pay off my parents' house, buy my own house and fit it out (computer, furniture and all), and try to make a deal where I can pay all of my taxes at once.

After that I don't know.

I like David Drake, or at least his RCN series. He has a lot of other work, but I haven't read most of it, and couldn't get into one of the fantasy novels of his (first in a series, so...).

What does that mean?
I never heard or read this word anywhere!!?

I vote for Alorael! :D :)

The Urquhart I'm referring to was some sort of British Intelligence officer during World War 2 (there were two, actually, but the Intell officer is the one I'm referring to). I don't remember what he did.

Keep in mind that I'm voting "Urquhart" instead of "yes" or "no," not "Urquhart" instead of "Alorael."

I used to like Tolkien, but in high school I tried reading the Lord of the Rings and couldn't. Which tells me something right there.

Dickson did well with the first Dorsai, but the others I've read weren't as good.

Oh, and don't forget Alan Dean Foster.

I enjoyed Salvatore's Spearwielder series and his Star Wars book (not the Episode 2 novelization, because I haven't read it), and got several dozen pages into George Martin's second book before I got lost. So I don't think I'll be reading him again. Also, I tried to read the Narnia series, and just couldn't. So I'll "graciously" leave it for others...

Has anyone else read anything by George Alec Effinger?

Brooks (the first set of three and the set of four, plus the Magic Kingdom more so, but new as well), Asimov, Zahn's Star Wars Stuff, Twain, Modesitt (Jr.), Yolen and anyone who's written for Traveller (the RPG).

I'm absolutely positive there're authors I've forgotten.

Okay, not sane as such, but more stable about my insanity. Plus better able to handle people in person.

And I'd go back to the Middle Ages too, and different areas during the period (various European areas, the Middle East, various Asian and African areas, plus the Americas). In all places I'd use a very subtle method of filming what I see, bring it back and make a fortune off it. Even if people think the movies are fictional...

EDIT: I'd also go back and meet Mark Twain.

I voted 1990s. I'd rather go forward in time first, get a bunch of personal improvements (get the cure for asthma, better reflexes, some mental work like improving my sanity, focus and learning ability, learn a bunch of languages and such), and then (1) go waaaaaaaaaay back and try out being a god, then (2) go forward from there to the Roman Republic about 500 BC, then the same area about 100 BC, then the Empire during the rule of Claudius and meet the man, then (3) go to the 1500s, then (4) go to the U.S. Civil War, each of the World Wars and Russia during the Cold War. Then I'd come back here and make myself rich and not famous.
