The North and South poles aren't going to melt yet. But by 2016 we will probably start to see tropical diseases appearing throughout the globe. Yeah global warming!

I was under the impression that the North Pole already has been melting in mid-summer for a few years. Not all the glaciers in the northern hemisphere, but the big ice chunk right on top of the pole.

If the ice keeps melting and the ocean keeps rising I might finally be on beach front. That's something to look foreward to. Just a shame about the whole "Ice Age" thing.

The North Pole ice floes will melt to the point where polar bears will starve and go extinct in the wild. Or they evolve to become a marine mammal.

The problem is that you will possibly live on a beach front only a relatively short time before you will get wet feet - apparently (correct me, Thuryl) the melting is going to accelerate.

By then most dams will have backfilled with silt, meaning less power generation from hydroplants. The environmentalists will see a few decapitated birds and complain about the wind-gen farms. Terrorist activities (or the percieved threat) will increase the price of crude shipping above the threshold of profitability.

Begin stockpiling whale oil, garden rakes, vegetable seeds and ammunition now or be left behind.

Some of my predictions for 2016?

If Israel isn't already destroyed by Iran, it will be fighting Palestine with renewed vigor after Sharon dies.

North Korea will either be absorbed or overthrown by the South, or they'll be in an unstable chaotic mess after bombing South Korea.

Poverty and disease will increase in sub-Saharan Africa, and any attempts to aid the people will result in further empowering their corrupt governments.

The US, still run by Republicans, will continue to spend billions of tax dollars on defense and ignore foreign aid and the worsening environment.

Until the UN agrees to everything the US says, the US will continue to ignore them at convenient moments. Because of a lack of power over the most powerful nation in the world, the UN will slowly live out its usefulness.

Iraq will still be in a mess. The lack of a Kurdish and Sunni power will further strenghten the Shi'is' grasps on their own countries and the on Middle East.

Terrorism will have worsened. (oops shouldn't have used 'terrorist,' I'm secretly being monitored by my friends in the government.)

EDIT: Oh, and unless they make a pill that sucks the fat out of your skin, most Americans will stay enormously obese.

EDIT #2: How could I forget China? By 2016, China will own the world.

If we are really lucky, by 2016 we will be living on the Moon, or else in space stations orbiting the Earth. So we won't have to worry about the ocean rising (although we still should stop it, it is cruel to completely mess up a planet, then leave it to its doom without clearing it up)

Isn't that what liposuction is for?

Yes, but that would involve getting up and going to the doctor.

Seriously though, I doubt we'll have affordable health insurrance then either.

Liposuction can't safely take off more than a few kilograms at a time. Even then, it's a risky procedure.

If all Americans stay/become obese then we can just kiss this country goodbye as without workers everything falls apart. You can probably expect a signifigant increase of people becoming drug addicts/ as the sentences for drug users keeps going down.

What are you talking about? The obese already make up a sizeable proportion of the workforce. Just because you're
fat doesn't mean you can't work.

I also have to wonder how you expect longer prison sentences for drug offences to actually help anyone with a drug problem, since a jail is about the easiest place in the world to get your hands on illegal drugs.

Also, since when are sentences for drug users going down? I sure haven't gotten that impression.

All research and succesfull drug policy
shows that treatment should be increased,
and law enforcement decreased while abolishing mandatory minimum sentences

Moral of the story: we're all fluffy bunny rabbits who are afraid of what lies ahead in time, and outside our homes :D

2016: Love cools; friendship falls off; brothers divide; in cities, mutiny; in countries, discord; in palaces, treason; and the bond cracked ’twixt son and father.
