Radioactive materials, like Uranium produce gamma rays, too (as well as alpha particles) that's why they're so bad to be around. Nuclear power plants work by using radioactive Uranium to heat up water, and generated energy that way (http://people.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-power.htm). You could do the same kind of thing with antimatter. Though, you don't just get gamma rays from antimatter, though, gamma rays can decay into other particles (eg, http://particleadventure.org/particleadventure/frameless/eedd.html, where an electron and positron annihilate to produce a photon which decays into D mesons :) ) -------------------- I often quote myself. As a scientist, I have to go with science! Religion has nothing to do with reality, and is just trying to justify peoples' ideas without any kind of concrete justification by saying what they think is the will of god(s) or something. Philosophy isn't much better than religion without wanting to bring in gods to back up your ideas. You could also call philosophy science without any kind of measuring, experiments, math, or physical justification. I like a quote from Feynman, one of the most amazing physicists ever, as most physicists will attest to, "philosophers say a great deal about what is absolutely necessary for science, and it is always, so far as one can see, rather naive, and probably wrong." -------------------- I often quote myself. Just FYI, incase you didn't already know about it, check out the sci.physics FAQ, it talks about some of this stuff http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/. Also, some stuff about particle physics http://particleadventure.org/particleadventure/. I don't think anyone's mentioned these links already. -------------------- I often quote myself. You could try an emulator like DOSBox, maybe? It's made to run on a 32 bit processor, but the 64 bit windows can run 32 bit apps, can't it? It's open source, too, so you could always compile it to work on a 64 bit system yourself if you wanted, too! If someone else hasn't already done that, that is. -------------------- I often quote myself. Hey, I didn't get my own personal post when I submitted my crappy graphics! I demand recognition, too! :P Also, it would be nice if there was a button to click that just let you view the newest additions, so I don't have to look through the whole list if I want to see what was added. -------------------- I often quote myself. When he's doing this all in his free time for fun and letting everyone look at it for free, and then doesn't fix problems, it's because he's busy. When we pay for it and he doesn't fix things, it's because he's lazy, and it's bad for buisness, too. -------------------- I often quote myself. Don't read this if you're religious, but... I like to name my priests Jesus, so I can say things like "Jesus, heal me!" or "they killed Jesus!" (I'm an atheist, what do you expect?) If I have a slith, I like to name him Godzilla, and I often name other people 'Tom Servo' or 'Crow T. Robot' from MST3K! -------------------- I often quote myself. When I was little I remember playing the Hugo adventure games, that had graphics, but you had to type in the commands. That game taught me how to spell elephant! I had to type "shoot elephant" so many damn times, quickly, before the elephant got away, I never forgot how to spell it! I also learned what bullion cubes are from that game! Playing the adventure type games also helped with basic deductive reasoning skills, too, since you have to figure out all kinds of puzzles and stuff. Not to mention they teach you to be patient and careful about what you're doing and pay attention to details, and recognizing patterns. RPGs do a lot of that too, and you have to figure out the plot as you go along, too, with lots of games. All the FPS games that I've played have thought me to strafe around corners so I don't get shot before I have a chance to get them! Not to mention valuable life skills about bouncing grenades off walls, and being careful when shooting a rocket launcher when standing near a corner, because it can hit the corner and take you out instead! And Doom taught me about demons from hell, and spider-brain things! I played a lot of the puzzle games as a kid, too, and those are obviously helpful somehow! But really, I do think pretty much all games are good for kids to play, even the FPS-type ones, as long as they play a variety of games, and not just one type of games or something. They also help with reading skills, expanding vocabulary (because, really, how else will you learn words like strafe!?), and paying attention to plots and stuff. -------------------- I often quote myself. So, it's okay to make Blades of Avernum and "Blades of Geneforge" (or something like it), so we can make thousands of our own scenarios, but the guy who made the games can't.... why again? -------------------- I often quote myself. Not necessarily directly on this topic, but all this talk about the Vahnatai and Slith makes something occur to me. The Slith we know about are a group that was banished from caverns deeper underground. We also know that there are many groups of Vahnatai other than the ones we met in Exile / Avernum living deeper underground. I would say that it is very likely that at least one group of the Vahnatai knows about the "good" Sliths living deeper underground. Maybe Avernum 4 could somehow involve some of this? -------------------- I often quote myself. It wouldn't be too big of an advantage, because there are different categories for each type of magic. Just like there is mage and priest magic, there would be vahnatai magic. Similarly, there could also be categories for mele weapons, pole weapons, and vahnatai weapons, or he could make their mele weapons skill low, but have a special skill "vahnatai weapons," (just like anatomy, etc.), that only vahnatai could have, and would increase their damage with vahnatai weapons. I would also like to see a *lot* more magic variety (as well as weapons variety!), too. I mean, we're always seeing towers full of tomes of arcane magic, lots of supposidly amazingly powerful magical beings, but what useful stuff can we do? Heal, haste, slow, shield, and some stuff with fire. There need to be a lot more options here, and a lot more variety! After all, we do have two (or three!) entire categories of magic to use, mage and priest (and vahnatai), we have plenty of room to add a whole lot more! -------------------- I often quote myself. I like the idea of a "cold war" between Avernum / The Empire / Vahnatai, with lots of secret things going on, assasinations, magic, the threat of a huge war with both sides having some kind of superweapons that could destroy everyone, overall tension and stress everywhere, agents hidden in enemy cities, etc. Just like the real cold war! Lots of great things could come out of ideas like that, look at all the great spy movies that are based on the cold war! -------------------- I often quote myself. No, but I *was* using, import = ... so I guess that imported the offset too... That seems kind of strange to me, because I imported a default creature, why would they have a color offset? Cool, my crappy pictures are up there now :) ! Look for "machines" for my good terrain graphics. The others kinda suck, I think, but maybe someone else can mess with them and make them look better if they decide to use them! All mine that're there are modified origionals, if you can't tell! I'll hopefuly be making some later that look better! I'm working on some that are cool swamp-monster/zombie things, but I'm having issues with the colors now... They're dark dark purple in the game instead of greenish like they should be! -------------------- I often quote myself. Why does it have to be backwards compatable? Why not just have something you can add in the begining of the script like: use_format_1; use_format_2; It seems like this might be a nice way to impliment commands that would otherwise break compatability. -------------------- I often quote myself. I don't think you can have state=-1 on anywhere but the very first node. You have nextstate=-1 when you want to end it, but with just state= they each have to be unique, I think. -------------------- I often quote myself.
