I just finished Lirael by Garth Nix, and am now reading some Forgotten Ralms trash written by Elaine Cuningham. I also read quite a few of Conan stories some time ago.

Actually, it might have something to do with the hardware itself. Do you remember components older than five years that overheat in 5 minutes? I do not. Actually, our old computer is only few degrees warmer than room temperature, where as my friends is always at least 45 degrees celsius warm. He has to constantly watch the thermometer if he doesn't want his computer to blow up...

I have tried Runescape. Many times. There's a reason why it's name can be interpreted "Run & Escape".

Seriously, I don't understand how something this mind-numbing can be addictive.

Still, compared to my friends brand new computer with XP, it still seems stable as a 200 kg anvil on flat ground.

Not from this mountain? Tuulentekija thought as he took the book back from Filbert. But if the hawks had not come for the material itself, then what had they been looking for?

For the technique to shape it, Tuulentekija pondered, and his mouth twisted with a grim smile. While Filbert had been discussing with Gnosis, he had revised the knowledge the spirit had told him about the contents of the book. It had almost nothing about the ice itself, but they had still hit a jackpot: the book Tuulentekija was holding was a catalogue of magical spells, ment to shape flesh, bone, metal, ice... basically any material known to man, given that the wizard who would cast the spells had sufficient power. He was just about to reopen the book, when Filbert interrupted him.

"Uh, there's something else I want to tell. The pearl has great healing powers...", Filbert begun.

"I know" Tuulentekija responded, quickly flapping trough the pages of the ancient tome. "Give it to Sequioa."

"But you're badly wounded, and..." Filbert tried, but Tuulentekija stopped him.

"Think for a moment; which one of us is going to fight the demon", he said. "Sequoia is", Filbert said with a defeated tone. "That's right. And he will need all help he can get" Tuulentekija replied. Besides, I have plans of my own...

"Oh, did Gnosis ask you to borrow your senses to him?" Tuulentekija asked before beginning to read a passage Gnosis had told him about. "What? No!" Filbert said and gave a nervous glance to the scarred swordsman. "Should he...?"

"Ah, nevermind" Tuulentekija replied, and then resumed his conversation with Gnosis.

"So you don't think the kid's up to it?" he mentally asked Gnosis. Putting it like that might not give the correct impression of my thinking, the spirit answered. In truth, I caught your thoughts before you gave this book to him. You gave an impression you still had something to say to me.

Tuulentekija shrugged and started inspecting the page he had searched from the book. The runes made no sense to him. "I'll agree then. I'll be your vessel. But before that, I have to ask you to contact a very special book..."

You want to tell your whereabouts to a physical you call Melora, Gnosis answered. That should not be a problem. I have already established contact with the tome in her possession. Tuulentekija's sore brains were baffled by the sudden overflow of information, but somehow he managed to push his again-growing headache aside and reply to the ghost. "That's clear then. I'll be waiting here", he said, and then lifted his gaze from the book and turned to Filbert and Sequoia. "You two should get going", he said with a much louder voice he had ment to.

Well, I know a multitude of CRPGs, but none of them quite match the open-endedness of Geneforge series. However, if roguelikes are not too mind-boggling to you, you could always give Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) a shot, but it's light years away from Geneforge and Morrowind.

OoC: Actually, I was half waiting for that kind of a reply.

As a little side note: Thralni, uncle Sam needs you!

IC:
After Sequoia had cleansed the ice, it had turned out to be surprisingly easy to break. Both Filbert, who didn't know whether he should be thrilled or scared, and Sequoia, who was clearly afraid of wasting any more time, were waiting beside Tuulentekija when he lifted the book from the shelf. "Just for your knowledge, I'm not sure I can read the runes in this", he said. "I know the basics of death hawk language, but I doubt this is written in it. Anyways, if we all fail, we should seek out Melora. She's the most likely to understand it."

"I doubt I can wait for long enough", Sequoia replied, and Tuulentekija shrugged. "Open it already", Filbert muttered. Just then, the book heated up a little, telling Tuulentekija there was something special about it. For a moment he hesitated, but opened the book nonetheless. He almost dropped the book when a foreign entity entered his mind...

---

So no more info of the hawks, Tuulentekija pondered after the short conversation with Gnosis. It would have been so easy if the book had contained details of their battle against Orloki. "Oh well, it was a long shot anyway", Tuulentekija muttered and rubbed his forehead. He still had to answer Gnosis's last question.

"I don't recommend you borrow my senses right now", he said. "I'm in quite bad condition. I think you should just stay in the book for now."

"Are you sure?" Gnosis replied, but Tuulentekija's attention had been turned elsewhere... by Filbert. "Hey, we've been waiting for, like, five minutes and you're still on the front page. If it's so intresting I want to see too!" Tuulentekija cursed him for distracting him, but soon an idea sparked in his aching brain. "Filbert, come here for a sec", he said. Then he turned his attention back to the book.

"It might be unwise to borrow my eyes", he told to Gnosis, "but I think my companion can help you." Tuulentekija could feel some uncertainty in the thoughts Gnosis sent to him next, but Tuulentekija decided to ignore them. "However, I have one question before I give this book to him: my companion holds a special pearl. I need to know how such pearl is turned into a weapon or armor." Tuulentekija listened to Gnosis's response, becoming more and more troubled every thought. Then he shut the book and handed it towards Filbert.

"Go ahead, if you still want to take a look", Tuulentekija said with a weary voice...

Tuulentekija and Filbert stared blankly at the figure in front of them. "We might ask you the same thing" they finally managed to say after a long while of confusion. "We thought you were far ahead of us."

"So did I" Sequoia replied. Tuulentekija rubbed his forehead, trying to come up with something to say, but Filbert was quicker than him. "What's troubling you?" he asked from Sequoia. The druid turned to the kid with a worried look.

"I couldn't sense you" Sequoia replied after a pause. "Everyone else I could hear like they were walking beside me, but you... you were hidden from me."

"Do you think that means something special?" Tuulentekija groaned and searched the floor for the black pearl. It had gone rolling somewhere.

"I hope not" the druid muttered. "However, be it of any importance, I must continue my journey. I have to confront the demon soon, for I don't know how much longer I can bear the power of this mountain." And with those words, Sequoia started walking towards the passage behind his startled companions. Tuulentekija shrugged and was already turning to follow him, when Filbert's voice caught his attention.

"Hey, wait!"

Tuulentekija glanced back at him, and noticed he was holding the black pearl. "Oh, that" he growled, when he noticed that the pearl wasn't the only thing Filbert was bewildered about.

Whatever power was radiating from Sequoia's body, had again cleansed a portion of the black ice that was covering the walls. However, this time it had revealed something extremely curious...

"DRUID!" Tuulentekija shouted at Sequoia, who had already wandered further up the passageway. "What is it?" they heard his puzzled voice answer.

"I think you should come and take a look at this!" Filbert yelled, still staring at the bookshelf that had been revealed from under the dark material.

One of the books had the same rune engraved in it's cover than the pearl Filbert was holding.

OoC: Row, row, row the boat, up & down the strea... err, mountain.

OoC: I think you have to explain how Filbert and Tuulentekija ended up to the slope you described. Otherwise your post is good, but if you don't add something to the beginning, you'll leave a weird gap in the story and it won't make any sense. I'm nonetheless going to continue from where you left.

BTW, I'd prefer Nazgul post as soon as possible.

IC: To speak the truth, Tuulentekija had no idea where they were, for his headache had totally messed his sense of direction. The air was fresh, but there was no breeze to tell wich way the exit was. So he and Filbert stumbled along the tunnel, only to find themselves in a dead end moments later.

"No voi helvetin perkele! Back we go!" Tuulentekija cursed and turned around so fast he almost bumbed on to Filbert. After stumbling a few dozen feet back, Filbert seized him. "What now?" Tuulentekija growled and turned to his young companion.

"Dindn't you notice it?" Filbert said with a bewildered voice. "Notice what?" Tuulentekija snarled, when his tired mind realised what Filbert was meaning.

Both of them took few, cautious steps more to the tunnel they had come from. Nothing happened. They began walking faster. Still nothing. They walked back and forth in the tunnel, then back to the cross-ways, a few meters to the left tunnel and back again. The mountain stayed still.

"The demon could just be playing with us", Tuulentekija suggested when they were already a long way in the left tunnel. He had dug the black pearl out of his pocket and was pressing it against his forehead to ease his pains. "It has just gone to pester someone else for a while, or it simply doesn't bother with us anymore." Filbert nodded a few times, but still neither of them could shake the feeling that the caves around them were somehow void of Órloki's presence.

After several long whiles of more walking, the tunnel again split. Just for spite, Filbert and Tuulentekija took different paths, just to find out that the passages reunited in a large cavern which reminded both of the library they had seen before. Difference was that all the shelves were covered in black ice, making the scrolls and books in them inaccessible. Tuulentekija sat near the wall and leaned backwards, while Filbert went and took a look to the numerous other passages leading out of the room. "Where the hell are we?!" Filbert shouted and waved his arms in sheer frustration. Tuulentekija shrugged and closed his eyes. He wanted to take a short nap, but the sound of Filbert's echoing footsteps made it impossible.

"What was that!?" Filbert suddenly yelped. Tuulentekija opened his eyes and stumbled back up. He had lost his track of time and had no idea how long had he just been lying there, but the rest had done some good for him. His head felt heavy as lead as he rose up, but when he got back on his feet, he realised that the pain was no longer as intolerable as it had been before.

"Yes?" Tuulentekija groaned and glanced around the room. There was nothing special to be seen, but what was that voice coming from the passage ahead...?

"Footsteps" said Filbert before Tuulentekija managed to open his mouth. Someone, or something, was coming up the tunnel...

Extra OoC: Wasn't New Inn of Blades the RP where someones character entered the scene wearing nothing more than his chainmail? Someone commented that with something like "good grief, put some pants on!"

"What now?" Tuulentekija groaned and gave a puzzled stare to the hesitant Filbert. The way his hand had reached for his pack had made Tuulentekija wary. "You aren't going to attack me, are you? I wouldn't mind otherwise, but I'm not in the shape of fighting you again" , he continued, and when he saw that Filbert relaxed a bit, he let his guard down too.

"It's just... I could heal you, with the this, I mean" Filbert replied and drew the ring out of his pack. Tuulentekija looked at it for a while, and then let out a strange, frowning noice.

"Don't bother. You said yourself that the healing effect is slow; I doubt I'd be much more use with it than I'm now. Save it for someone who really needs it."

"Are you sure?" Filbert asked, still holding the ring. "As you said yourself, you're not in condition to fight..."

A sudden, distant rumbling stopped their cheerfull conversation. "What was that!?" Filbert shouted in surprise. "That... was strange" Tuulentekija replied. "It sounded similar to the shifting passages, but it didn't feel so...controlled."

"But that sound didn't come from anywhere near, did it?" Filbert asked, with a small hint of fear in his voice. "No, it didn't" Tuulentekija muttered and again rubbed his forehead. The pain was getting worse every moment. "But why would the demon shift passages that far from us?"

"We should get going" Filbert said while nervously glancing the walls around him. Tuulentekija knew he was absolutely right, and so they again got going, towards whatever end they might face...

OoC: Is Sherlock still there somewhere? It would be about the time for his character to act before ours venture any further...

"I'm going after him" Tuulentekija muttered and stumbled towards the stairway. "Are you sure? You don't look like you're in fighting shape", Cain replied, and when Tuulentekija turned to look at him, he could see from Edith's eyes that she fully agreed with their partly demonic companion.

"You are rigth, I'm not", Tuulentekija groaned, but with a slight smile on his deformed face. "I've been beaten more during these few days than I've been in years, and my body isn't all too happy about it. But if I'm going help him make a difference, I certainly won't be able to it from here." When he said this, he wasn't looking to Cain, but Edith.

With those words Tuulentekija again turned around and began climbing the stairwell. The awfully bright light around him felt like someone was stabbing his head with a knife, but somehow he managed to stumble forward and came to crossways. Tuulentekija cursed under his breath and wildly swung his head around to see if there were anything discerning the different paths. Then he noticed the arrow.

Tuulentekija did not know that Filbert had made it, but he didn't really care anyway. It was the only sign indicating that someone had even been in the small room, and Tuulentekija didn't want to waste any time pondering whether it was a trap set by the demon or not. "Better to die there anyway than here" he thougth grimly and sprinted to the passage...

OoC: He will propably catch up with Filbert in a matter of seconds...

...standing for Signature Rating Game.

The idea of this (idiotic) topic is to rate the signature of the previous replier. In a nutshell, you write a bit of text describing what you think about his/her signature and then give him/her a score from 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 the best.

As the starter of this topic, I sadly don't have a signature to rate, so I'll have to wait if people show interest towards this silly topic before doing anything...

As the lich turned to leave, Tuulentekija suddenly took a step forward.

”Stop!” he shouted to the ancient being. “Before you go, you owe me an answer!” The curator turned to the old, scar-faced man with a mocking look in its long-rotten eyes.

“What does your mind seek from me, mortal?” Tuulentekija heard a voice filled with fake politeness answer. However, this time it was more similar to the telepathy Edith had used, and seemed not originate from the room around him, but rather from inside his head. And somehow he also knew it wasn’t only the curator speaking…

“I want to know if they really came here. The Death Hawks” the old swordsman said. Of course, no-one expect Edith (and perhaps Melora) had no idea what he was talking about. “They came here thousands of years ago to steal this ice, or metal, or whatever from you.” The curator didn’t respond in any way, but something in its dead eyes told Tuulentekija he had hit something.

“I am right, aren’t I?” Tuulentekija continued and a strange fire lit up in the depths of his black eyes. “Yes, now that I think of it, it makes perfect sense. They came here and stole from your library the ability to mold this material. I always wondered how they managed to craft their armour, but now that I’ve how your master uses it to shift the winding passages of this place, I have no suspicions about it anymore” he said and struck the black ice beside him with his fist. “But what I find most interesting is, that they defeated you and your master, beat you up and flew away. I know they did, otherwise I wouldn’t be wasting my time in this accursed place.”

At this point, Edith hurried to explain something to others, but Tuulentekija’s attention was fixed on the undead form in front of him. The Curator, in turn, rose up to its full height and looked deep into Tuulentekija’s eyes. There was something disturbing in its gaze, as if the demon itself was looking down at him, trying to judge how much the old man actually knew. It spoke again, but this time solely with its own voice. Its master had again fled and left its puppet speechless.

“You are a fool. No mortal being, human or not, could hurt my master on his own gorund “It said with a calm tone, but Tuulentekija wasn’t finished yet.

“The same was said about my master, Ashar the Embittered, the sole resident of the Icy Fortress and the last of the Death Hawks!” he shouted back, and his voice grew stronger with every word. “My people thought of him as a demon of storms, an ideal warrior that no-one could kill.” There was a brief moment of silence as Tuulentekija paused to take breath. Everyone could feel the tension rising in the room; from the corner of his eye, Tuulentekija could see Cain adopt a fighting stance. Whether it was intentional or not, he could not tell.

“Ashar sleeps under the never-melting snow of the glaciers, I don’t.” Tuulentekija said the last words with voice so poisonous that it was as if he was spitting snakes off of his mouth. Again, there was silence. Tuulentekija was waiting for the undead to leave, to run back to its master, for it was clearly afraid of Melora’s strange new powers. But for his surprise, in no more than a blink of an eye, multiple things happened at once; the Curator waved its hands and invoked a horrible cursed that caused the air ring like a thousand frozen bells, Cain jumped towards it screaming from rage and Melora said something that caused yellow sparks to surround the liches withered form. Tuulentekija, on the other hand, couldn’t see what happened on the room after that, for the Curators spell hit him with a tremendous force and bashed him against the ice behind him. He fell to the floor in horrible pain and bad memories dancing inside his head. Again he was lying on the floor of the Fortress, again his bones were all broken…again he could hear Ashar inside his head, mocking him… and again he saw Melody, but not the beautifull, happy Melody he would have liked to remember; instead his sight was filled by a picture of old, sick woman, crying bitterly…

It took a while from Tuulentekija to regain conscious thinking, and as he did, he realized that something was leaving his body; the blessing he had bestowed upon himself by reading the ancient tome had finally lost its battle against the dark forces of the mountain. No longer would his wounds close in a second after being hit, no longer would his old body be able to resist the horrible weariness the long travel had caused; Risto Roopenpoika was again fully mortal.

Tuulentekija shook his head and slowly crawled up. “What happened?” He muttered as his eyes wandered across the silent room around him. “Why did it attack you?” Melora asked and stared at him. “The hell I know what moves inside the heads of those things!” Tuulentekija growled and pressed his hands against his forehead; his head was again hurting like hell. “Where did that thing go anyways? Did you kill it?”

“It fled”, Cain said gloomily, staring at the foreboding staircase. The liches unexpected response had put everyone standing on their toes. The atmosphere of paranoia that had haunted them along the way up was now denser than ever before. The moment of final confrontation was closing, and Tuulentekija wasn’t so sure they were up to the challenge. And as the other were discussing about what to do next, Tuulentekija was wondering what he had said that had caused the lich to become enraged. Unfortunately, his growing headache again prevented him of finding the answer; no matter how much he searched his mind, all other memories came to his mind expect for the the one that could have made the on-coming fight so much easier for them all…

OoC: This kinda forces Sherlock to write next… or then not. I dunno. I spent as much thought on this as I could, but I still doubt it’s as good as it could be. No joo, elämä on. I just hope I didn’t mess up anything important, rewriting all this would be such a bane.

And as you propably can guess, I had it bit more than partly written...

I still don't recover Tuulentekija getting himself a new mask. But I'm willing to let it slide if we really are going to resurrect this thing. This monstrosity has been haunting me for the past months, and I'll be very happy if it finally gets an ending it deserves.

BTW, I have an idea for an IC. If no-one has anything against it, I can post it anytime.

OOC: Or Tuulentekija noticed the footsteps before he noticed that Melora was back. Or something like that. It shouldn't really be a problem.
