First, I was thrilled with Lost. I thought that it could become something great. I watched trough the first season, then the second one and... became extremely bored. The problem with the series is that it sparks more and more questions every episode, but takes awful lot of time to answer even one of them. In the end of the second season, there were still things from the first one that were bugging me. If the third one continues on those lines, so that I still don't get what happend during the first when it ends, I'm very likely to stop wasting my time with it. Some of my fellows say that you have too see every episode to stay along. In retrospect, I can safely say that I could have watched only every other episode and hadn't lost anything. The series should seriously pick up some pace. Tuoni is the name of the former god of death. He's also called Thone in the more southern regions. Just felt like adding these little details. As a little side note, here in Finland there's an artist who goes by the name Kaarle Viikate. Search the latter word in a Finnish - English dictionary, and you'll get what I mean. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. So dark is the road, But darker would my mind be If moon wouldn't shine its silver Upon this dying land -Carlos Scythe --- It was a beautiful autumn night; the sky was clear, letting the stars and the moon shine upon the desolate road Marras was walking. Back home in the North, trees had already shed their leaves in preparation for winter, but here in the South it was still lush and green. It made Marras feel happy for the first time in a long, long time. Of course, each silver lining had a dark cloud in the middle; this time it was the direction he was headed to. A city, he thought, Kirkwood, if my memory serves me right. Even though he was still miles away, he could already feel it just behind the horizon. Cities weren't exactly more alive than other areas; sure, there was a lot of life in the form of humans and rats, but that always came at the cost of other lifeforms, most importantly, trees. And one grown-up pine has life force equal to ten grown-up men. So, instead of stepping from a puddle to a lake, it was like stepping from still water into a current; the amount of water didn't change that much, but you got colder much more quickly. Or, in Marras' case, hungrier. For a moment, Marras considered turning back. He was unsure whether he could keep himself under control in such circumstances. Maybe it would be better to stay away, at least for the moment. But in the same time, the name 'Kirkwood' caused a strange echo in the back of his head. Had Tuoni said something about it? No, he said something about a sleeping god, Marras pondered. He knew Kirkwood had some kind of a patron god, but that was all he could remember. Maybe I should ask from the locals? That seemed like a good idea. Of course, he could have just asked from one of the souls within himself, but he didn't feel like disturbing them. They have a right to rest, at least for now. So, hesitantly, he continued walking. Hopefully he'd stumble across a farm house soon, so he could turn back quickly if Kirkwood was a false alarm. Deep inside, Marras hoped it wasn't. He had wandered so long without answers that he was beginning to forget the questions, and that was never a good thing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained he thought as he strode along the pathway. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. Marras stared mutely at the surrounding chaos. Houses burning, corpses crucified on to trees, mutilated bodies (some still somewhat alive) lying everywhere, children crying beside their dead parents. Someone had clearly had lots of fun. Oh well, just more food for me, then. Silently, he walked towards one of the dying. “Cold… it feels…cold…” the poor soul spluttered in its languish. “Don’t worry, friend”, Marras replied and put his hand on the man’s forehead. “Your pains will soon be forgotten.” With those words, his pure white hand unravelled to thousands of thin threads that wrapped around the man’s head. For a moment, his body tried to struggle against them, but soon its movement seized and Marras felt how the man’s soul entered his body. For a moment, the man’s memories lingered in his mind, filling it with his ambitions, loves, fears… then they faded and the soul disappeared to the recesses of Marras’ body. “One step closer to godhood” he muttered and moved to his next victim… Few days later, a patrol of royal soldiers found a demolished village at the edge of their kingdom. They didn’t find a single corpse though, only fine ashes where there had been some. Puzzled and horrified, they reported to their king of yet another village raided by the zealous worshippers of Gorganthas. In the same time, Marras stumbled across another village that had suffered a similar fate; no crucified corpses this time though, but a grim totem made from the bones of former villagers (probably work of one of the barbaric war gods). It got the same treatment. It was an ungrateful job, but the alternative wasn’t any better. His strange new body required mortal souls to operate, and one way or another he needed to get them. For the new god of death, dying was unfortunately not an option… -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. This song will be playing when I meet the love of my life: Jump by System of a down. Or something equally exhilariting. Right now, I feel: Uurastaja by Viikate What makes me happy is: Niin tuleni teen by Indica. My love of life was inspired by the song: Moonlight shadow by Mike Oldfield. My message to the world has always been: Silent Planet by Iron Maiden. Paschendale is quite close, too. Next time I'm in front of a crowd, I'll say: Kevyesti keskellä päivää by Viikate. My friends see me as: Uh, somebody give me a hand here, I don't know any clown related songs! When I'm drunk I say: Lady in black by Uriah Heep. My alter-ego is: Mandoliinimies by someone who's totally unknown to me. My deepest secret is: Misplaced by Sonata Arctica. My day will be like: Viimeinen tanssi by Indica. When I'm in the shower, I sing: Wake the Snake by Lordi. My favorite thing to do is: Wanderlust by Nightwish. There's plenty of room to walk around here. My parents are like the song: My father likes Lady in Black like crazy. Don't know about my mom, though. My ultimate song for dancing is: I'd need to dance for a bit to know. So no answer. At my wedding they'll play: Friend or Foe by T.A.T.U. The story of my life is: Ikuinen virta by Indica My innermost desire is: A Little less conversation by Elvis Presley. To cheer myself up I sing: Osapäivänatsi by Juice Leskinen. Easy Livin' by Uriah Heep will also do. At my funeral they'll play: Something happy with a fast tempo. Hmmmm, maybe Ei elämästä selviä hengissä by Juice Leskinen. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. Some nasty numbers I took from the newest Tiede 2000 magazine: "If the energy consumption rates of China, India and the countries of South-America continue increasing at the current rate, mankind's need for energy will grow from current 14 Terawats to 45 TW during the next 30 years. If the use of bio-fuels, wind and geothermal energy increase notably, this might stop at 40 TW." This was followed by a few calculations, but I think everyone will realize what this means better if you do them yourselves: First, count how many new 1000 MW nuclear plants we would need to build during that 30 year period. How many plants does that make per day? Then, see how many 1,5 MW windmills you'd need to build to get the same effect. Doesn't seem very easy, does it? Luckily, the sun radiates 175 000 TW worth of energy down to earth; that 26 - 31 TW we need doesn't seem so bad anymore. However, we still have to build a hellish amount of solar collectors to cut it, so maybe it would just be easier to cut our consumption instead. NOTE OF THE SOURCE: This is my own translation of a certain part of the main article, "Solar energy is necessary". As the article is from the newest issue, it is not accessible from the magazine's homepage . Besides, I didn't find "in eglish" option anyway, so it's useful to only those capable of reading finnish. Don't know if this reply contributes anything to this discussion anymore, but there you go. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. But what about creating a canister which makes one of the rebels a walking disease factory? A contagious virus that does now harm to the user, but will kill everyone else? Of course, there are high changes of such creation going out of control, so I can see why they haven't done it... -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. Uh? Sahara won't get colder if we put solar panels, actually it may heat up a little more depending on the color of the panels. If we use standard black, walking above the panels would equal to walking on a heated up frying pan. If Sahara would get colder from our use of the panels, that would indicate something *really* weird is going on with the sun, and if that was the case, getting enough energy would be the least of our concerns. You see, although we take energy from the light, sun will be giving us more energy for several billion years or so. As long as the sun shines and nothing drastic happens to earths alignment to it, we can leech as much as we want without having to fear running out of it. You are right, though, that humankind's need of energy will roughly triple during the next century (has been stated in at least one science magazine here in Finland). If this is the case, then nuclear energy won't really solve any problems at all, 'cause we would need to build one reactor per day for several dozen years, and that's not gonna happen. Fusion won't be our savior either, as getting much more energy from fusion than fission would require humongous reactors, so we really can't expect a fusion plant to generate much more energy than a fission one. And so we again come to the problem of building enough reactors in a limited time. As it seems, sun is our only solution if our needs for energy will be rising at this rate. Of course we can always cut consumption, but I'm skeptic of that happening unless human population drops drastically. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience. It's possible to get the price that low once they get the mass production going. Sure, building and testing the first few will cost like hell, but once we get the factories ready and running, it shouldn't be that hard. It'll take time (likely a year or few), but it is feasible. I don't know how that helmet could protect against depleted uranium bullets or such, but overall that armor seems to be a plausible and good idea. It was, somehow, clarifying and confusing in the same time. As they slowly got nearer the throne of the demon, the presence of Cain and the others became stronger; that was understandable, but in the same time, the consciousnes of Gnosis became more and more fused with his own. And in the same time, melting the ice became easier. It was not only because the density was decreasing. As the last inches of the ice melted, Tuulentekija realized that the vicinity of Melora's tome as well as the center of the library were causing an increase in his powers. The next thing he realized was a horrible pain shooting trough his left leg. "Graah!" he shouted and fell to his knees, further piercing himself to a spike of black ice that had sprung from the ground. Lisha understood the situation admirably quickly, hastily jumping forwards, avoiding her companion's fate. This is it , Tuulentekija thought. The pain had clarified his mind, and he was now absorbing knowledge faster than anyone could comprehend without experiencing the same. As adrenaline rushed trough his veins, time seemed to slow around him. In his mind he examined their battlefield; he needed not to look, for somehow, he knew . He imagined the same chandeliers and the same pentagram the others had seen. He sensed their positions, Edith and Melora lying on the floor, Lisha, Filbert and Sequoia struggling to avoid the spears of dark ice, and Cain, in the middle of the pentagram, draining the essence of the demon to himself. He could also sense the floor twitching under him; any moment following, a spear of ice would rise from it, piercing his old heart and killing him. I can't let that happen, can I? he thought, and concentrated all his remaining strenght on a single word, a single spell. "SULA!", he commanded. The spike that had pierced him melted, drenching him in a black liquid. There was a loud, crackling sound, the kind you can hear from a frozen lake during springtime. Ripples were send trough the melting floor, swiping away spikes that were close to hitting Lisha and Filbert. There was, however, another, more unfortunate effect: were the power was greatest, the ice melted to the depht of several dozen feet. And that happened to be exactly under Tuulentekija's feet. "Perkele!" he shouted before dissappearing into a puddle of tainted water. He had once before been close to drowning; memories of that occasion now flashed in his eyes. He had fallen from a ship during a fight, wearing a chain hauberk and iron leggins. He remembered how his hope had slowly faded as he had been sinking trough the water, leaving only cold, deep fear. Ashar had saved him that day, but this time there'd be no-one to help. Well, the end had to come some day , he thought and closed his eyes in grim acceptance... OOC: You still have a chance to save him if you act quickly. Otherwise, this is the end of him. EDIT: Just a note: I began writing this before Thralni posted. Now, I don't think these posts exclude each other, but the change in tone is kinda funny. I'm not very sure which of those categories is closest to the education I've had in the vocational institute. It's been pretty basic, things I can apply to my everyday work, such as simple thermodynamics, newtonian physics combined with some metallurgy. Other than that, I like reading different science magazines to broaden my views. I'd say I have rather good mathematical understanding on the basic level and mediocre conceptual understanding of the more complicated things. -------------------- I have nothing more to do in this world, so I can go & pester the inhabitants of the next one with a pure concscience.
