Since this photo is from late November, I think it qualifies: This photo was taken post-Philly Marathon, my first ever (3:52:45). On the left are friends Amy and Erin; to the right, my friend Adrian and my wife Diane. The bad clothes I'm wearing were from Goodwill, since we were planning on discarding them right before the race started, but since they hadn't disappeared when we got back, we gratefully reclaimed them - it was pretty cold! Even though we're smiling there, we all felt like death. :) EDIT: Oh, and the new Battlestar Galactica kicks Firefly's rear end. :P [ Tuesday, December 05, 2006 17:47: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Cheap stickers are getting harder and harder to come by these days, you know. We don't *all* have access to a teacher supply store. Maybe we could start scraping "buckeyes" off of Ohio State helmets... [ Sunday, November 26, 2006 10:38: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Amen to that. I fully intend to give her home a wag-of-the-finger as I drive by on Lexington Road when I'm home for Thanksgiving break. Yeehaw! You don't know how embarrassing it was as a Louisvillian to know that my city continued to vote her in again and again, despite being one of Kentucky's few puddles of blue. Now it's over! My sympathy, however, does go out to my friend Beth who works here in town as Northup's scheduler. I'm certain, however, that she shouldn't have a problem finding another job on the Hill if she wants one. EDIT: Oh yeah... also: RUMSFELD RESIGNS!!!!!! This has to be the happiest Nov. 8th EVAR. Not as such. However, Congress can constrain the heck out of administration practices through oversight and investigations, undercutting the administration's credibility for pursuing its current policy course. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Congress controls the purse strings. No more funding for the war, no more war. I voted this morning at 6:11 a.m. I was there at 6:00, and there was actually a line thirty people long. Turnout should be pretty high in Northern Virginia. Go Webb! Here's to turning Macaca out of office. :) Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

The one great thing about FFX was that status effects were actually pretty useful for the player, because whether they would work or not depended on a binary switch as opposed to some percentage-based chance of effectiveness (usually small). This (alas) doesn't seem to be the case in FFXII. What I really like about XII is how the game harkens back to Tactics in its artistic and aural aesthetics. The plot also seems to have similar elements as well, though I'm only just starting to get to the point where the excretion hits the rotary oscillator. Alright - so I got FFXII, and it's a pretty good time so far. Combat isn't as much of a travesty as the demo made it seem - in many ways, it's a lot like NWN or KotOR, with the potential to make the characters much, much more intelligent about it. The party I went to on Saturday had a "P" theme, so we all had to dress up as something starting with the letter "P". I went as Pandora, and my wife went as pandora.com. I'll see if I can't drudge up some pics. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Eh, no one *really* wanted Edge in their party at the end. :P FFX managed to stay fairly balanced until the very end, when (for me) Yuna outstripped everyone else on account of the incredibly high magic stat from her grid path combined with a couple strategic black magic grabs and x-magic. I was a little sad that Lulu became so irrelevant, but she just wasn't as strong. :( Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

The junction system, combined with too much reliance on summons in general, disproportionate experience awards (my Squall was level 99 when everyone else was 45 or so at the end), and then all of that not really mattering at the end of the game when essentially what you had to do to win was get Squall's final limit break and the item that allowed him to use it more often really ruined the experience for me. From what I can remember about the plot, it was pretty cool. If Square had implemented a system more in keeping with FF6 or 7, it would have been a better game. I wonder why they're so reluctant to stick with something that works? I know that how magix works is often incorporated into the storyline, but doing this has led to some pretty lousy experiences. I think Square's best successes far and away have come either from implementing job systems or keeping the characters distinct in their skills and abilities, as opposed to just being shells with slightly different stats that you can attatch the same powers to when you swap them in or out. I enjoyed FF7 for example, but I didn't like that any character could use any materia - it made the characters less special/tactical. Differences in limit breaks just didn't seem sufficient. Of all the games, I think that FF6 and X came close to getting customization and individuality right. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |
