Of course, maybe all forms of government are doomed to fail, but I believe government that attempts to account for man's worse nature (all that "nasty, brutish, and short" stuff) is destined to hold out longer. I loves the checks and balances! Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Anarchy is a bad idea. I'm willing to bet that none of us are strong enough to protect ourselves and our interests, and as soon as we ban together to defend ourselves, we create rules to govern that arrangement (whether formal or implied), and BOOM! you have government all over again. Any government premised on relying on humanity's better nature is doomed to fail. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Tricia Helfer is a goddess. I think the most boring sport on television is golf. Also up there, as much as I enjoy the sport, would be televised coverage of rowing (usually only to be seen during Olympic coverage). Baseball is great to have on if you're at the bar (as is cricket) and have other things to drawing your attention at the same time. Also, the Sox v. the Yanks series during the playoffs two years ago was riveting, IMO. College basketball, especially during the NCAA tourney in the Spring, however, reigns supreme in my home, but that's to be expected in a couple composed of a UK alumnus and a Duke alumna. Ah, the dreaded freshman fifteen - it strikes so many. I however, actually lost fifteen pounds, owing to a draconian meal plan that had me eating at Downer Commons (that's right, "downer") everyday, causing a severe loss of apetite. I'm living proof that you can lose weight on a diet based on softserve ice cream. :) Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I'm not enthused about it - it just means that they'll start limiting their support for 10.3.x, and so on and so forth, which I think is a perfectly fine OS. Shelling out another $100+ bucks for features I won't use is aggravating. How about Mac OS 10.X Catamount? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I don't know that there's such a thing as true love - I think it's more like something that can be measured in volume, like, say, alcohol. And like alcohol, too much love without the right forethought or precaution can lead to woe, and then a heck of a "hangover.". It's always true love until it's not, unless you weren't ever in love in the first place. But then, what would be the point? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Hmm. The only movie I can think of that was actually better than the book it was based on was "The Godfather." The book was a mere potboiler; the movie, art. [ Thursday, August 03, 2006 03:49: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I've been re-reading books from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series in an effort to ease the stress of my summer Property course (which fortunately is now over). I've read the whole series through twice, and I still can't manage to put them down and move on. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

It's a scenario, however. I affirmatively assert: Pool of Radiance 2 is the worst cRPG ever. Can anyone disprove this? :P Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Sometimes incredibly difficult games are very fun. Though not a cRPG, the original Ghosts & Goblins for the NES springs readily to mind - I don't know anyone who's beaten it without flash memory saves on an emulator. Likewise, the original Castevania was pretty tricky. We're just not accustomed to playing difficult games anymore, which is kind of a shame. I still think PoR2 is the worst though - the hype for it beforehand was so disproportionate to the actual playing experience - it was supposed to be the game that dethroned the Infinity Engine games, and it just didn't - spectacularly. I've never felt more remorse for having spent $50 in my life. EDIT: Oh, so I'll add that as a qualifier for worst game ever - it has to have had crazy hype beforehand - maybe "Fable"-like hype. The US would drop the hammer on whoever is within proximity of those thought responsible. No one, for that reason, who has any value for their lives, would actually stage a direct skirmish-style attack on our borders. Even after way-indirect 9/11, we still pancaked a lot of Afghanistan. Not that it's a good thing, but that's probably what would happen. I think it's fair to say that Israel's nerves may be a little raw. However, that doesn't justify the extent of the response, which really creates no incentive for the Lebanese government to try to fix things, especially considering that the Lebanese government may truly not have the means to curb Hezbollah anyway. :( [ Thursday, July 13, 2006 17:21: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Genre: console RPGs Crimes: needlessly complex/frustrating advancement/experience/combat systems, in the name of "innovation." Severely imbalanced combat systems that put a premium on respawning the same techniques over and over, combined with those techniques taking tremendous amounts of realtime to complete. Slow, slow combat load times, with disproportionately small experience rewards for the time invested. Needlessly large pools of available characters with little true differentiation or development. A lot of people raved about it, but I really didn't enjoy Chrono Cross all that much. I thought the number of characters available took away from the game, and the combat and character advancement systems were dull. If the game had been pared down to, say, seven main characters, and combat was more in line with its predecessor, it would have been a superior game. The other games that I'm thinking of here are Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - the skill system in that game really took away from my pleasure in it - and FFVIII, which I know some people here loved for the story, but every battle was a festival of spawning summons, which took forever, and had little variety, until you got a walkthrough and figured out how to get Squall's final limit break, which was then what you had to have pretty much to win the game. Oh, and leveling was so imbalanced that Squall had about forty levels on everyone else by the end. Bugs can also make games wretched. I will forgive KOTOR 2 though, because it did have that Black Isle style goodness of quality in scripting and interesting areas, even though the game was clearly rushed. Actually, my hard and fast candidate for worst cRPG ever is Pool of Radiance 2: Ruins of Myth Drannor. No variety in character design, no variety in level design, poor color pallets, minimal story advancement, and bugs, bugs, bugs! EDIT: Actually, Sacrifice, from Interplay, was pretty bad too. quote:For people opposed to gay marriage, I don't think the revulsion comes from the marriage aspect of it so much as the "being gay" part. Public masturbation is probably a bad analogy, however: anyone can masturbate publicly, after all. I think a more appropriate analogy would be "being of ethnicity x in public." Does Australia have anti-discrimination laws for sexual preference? I know that the US federal gov. doesn't, though some states (and many corporations) do. I think Stug is right: the trouble is that money (here, in the form of tax subsidies and legal benefits) ever entered the picture. I don't mind that there are tax breaks and insurance benefits for married couples - I think that there are some definite benefits to having people paired off in stable, loving, accountable relationships - and frankly, I believe that anyone should have a right to determine how his or her estate is handled when they die (and for the most part, this is entirely possible through well-crafted wills and deeds). What disturbs me is that people would use an extant legal/financial benefit to prosecute their religious agenda. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |
